Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

Very disappointed with the service. I have been with AHS for 14 years and its a shame to pay a monthly fee every month only to find out when you really need service...there is no urgency and waiting on hold for customer service over 45 minutes is shameful. My refrigerator when out last Friday. I receive a call from the repair contractor that they have the part but they won't be able to get out until another 5 days. Another weekend without a fridge. I am online now looking for another Home Warranty.

Worst experience and headache I have ever dealt with personally and as a business owner for 9 years. This process started on 6/23/17 and now it's 9/7/17 and the problem with my HVAC is still not resolved. I was referred to a company for service of which was completed and diagnosed. AHS (American home shield) authorized the work for a new furnace and AC unit. Fast forward 6 weeks for parts to be ordered I find out that the company referred to me by AHS has never done work in my county and were not aware of the protocol that my county requires a permit for this work. It's important to note that I have 2 children under 2 during this time. Because the original service provide doesn't do... Read More

I would not use this service. Customer support is non-existent and they barely cover anything. The contractors they use are also not very good. Overall, was very disappointed by their service and could not reach anyone to discuss the bill.

AHS is not always customer friendly, i have been a customer for 19 years but the last 2 year's i have encountered many problems while dealing with multiple contractors and AHS have been no hope with resolving issues. I feel like AHS do not care how the contractors treat their customers. AHS do not support customers.

Notified AHS of a plumbing problem at a rental home I own on Sunday evening online. I reported it as a toilet overflow, but it turned out to be a blockage in the line. Was notified immediately that Lone Star Water Resources was assigned to my job. The company finally arrived on Thursday which was beyond the 48 hour window as called for. They fixed what they could and cleared the line. I was contacted by an AHS person about my claim some time later and she told me (almost a lecture) that if there was an outside cleanout, this job would have gone much smoother and maybe faster, but the assigned plumbers couldn't find one. She did offer some suggestions about how to escalate future... Read More

AHS was a lifesaver when we bought our home. There were several plumbing issues that weren't detected during the inspection (at no fault of the i specto). Service was always prompt and courteous. We saved much more than we paid.

American Home Shield is easy to report a problem, but the plumber didn't return with the parts to fix the problem. A number of calls to the plumber yielded no results and call wait times to talk to AHS was 1 hour+. I tried multiple times to call them and 30-45 minutes into the wait time their system would drop the call. There is no way to send them and email inquiry either. So right now we are stuck with a broken bathroom faucet for the third week with no results. Very frustrating.

I have been trying to get hold of American Home Shield about a plumbing call to my home and on the phone there is an over an hour. On the Facebook page someone said they would get back to me and still have not after a week. They have been wanting me to renew my plan and so I called the renewal line and the agent was just rude and did nothing for me. All she really cared about was making another sale. It seems to me that American Home Shield is just a scam to get as much money without doing anything. I will not have their Plumbing company out again after they did nothing and I already prepaid the 70 service bill. Now that they have my money they refuse to contact me.
