Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

You assigned a contractor 40 miles away when I'm sure there were more companies much closer. It took 5 days to get an appointment. We needed a new part which took another 5 days to get and in the meantime the worker flooded our laundry room and carpeting throughout half our dining room because he didn't check his work before he left. He didn't install the part properly which locked up my dryer and it was another week to fix it right. We were very unhappy with this company and their attitude and would never hire them on our own and hope that in the future if we ever need an appliance company that you do not assign them to us.

AHS has increased cost and decreased quality of service. They hire sub-par companies with terrible customer service. I had 2 recent issues. One where it took 4 service calls for a very simple plumbing issue (which is still not resolved) and an A/C issue which would have cost me more to repair than AHS would have paid for a new system. Buyer beware.... When we first signed up with them over 10 years ago they would have replaced our A/C. Now they have a $1500 limit on any repairs or replacement. The repairs would have cost us over $1500 for items "not covered " on a 19 year old system. We settled for a "cash in lieu" of repairs for a little over $500 and hired a local company to... The repair man from "Always Open and Close" was outstanding, HOWEVER, I am not happy with AHS policy as told by this company. My garage door opener had literally fallen apart and beyond repair but he said AHS would not replace it with a new one. I had to pay to have a new one installed. I have been a customer of AHS for over 12 years and it can't replace an unusable garage door opener! Why do I have your warranty service? Richard Tessitore Ricktessitore@gmail.com

i called in for my air conditioner. After almost two days of 90 plus degrees, AHS called earlier in the day that a worker from total air care will arrive. Although the worker did not arrive until around 8pm, but to his defense he was overbooked and shorthanded, he came and took care of the problem. I am totally satisfied with the work done.

I've never had any problems getting AHS to fix a problem at my house. They have always gotten my problems fixed without me having to pay more than the standard service fee. The only complaint I can give is that it takes them a while to get a tech out to the small town I live in. It doesn't take long for it to be too long of a wait to get the AC fixed in July in Texas. If you live in a larger city, I bet that won't be a problem for you. Overall, AHS is a good product and a good company.

Almost a month ago we've been dealing with an issue that's not nice with AHS. We had a washing machine repair visit on 8/10, at that time the part was ordered. At 8/16-19, we couldn't get anyone on the phone after multiple attempts. Finally someone did come out to replace the parts needed but by the time the repair visit was done the machine was down again and worse than before. So calls were placed again from 8/25-30 to no avail. Finally they called on 8/31 to set up another house call to check the machine. Meanwhile we're without a machine and a very disgusted situation where this could've been averted. Also, it's the second Saturday we've spent at the laundromat washing clothes. HELP!!!... Read More
