Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

For the most part it is easy to get service. The have replaced most of the appliances in my kitchen over the last year. I detract a little because it is extremely hard to get a hold of them. 30 minutes on hold to talk to someone is not unheard of. I have saved a bunch of money each year.

I have had AHS for many years and they are getting worse every year, their prices have gone up and they lowered their coverage. This winter I my heat was not working so they sent Liberty Plumbing to fix it in November and now in the coldest time ever in March in Northern NJ, the heater is out and the Liberty Plumbing wants to take the easy out and replace the unit rather then repair it. The problem is they want me to pay $5000 over what the AHS covers which is less than $1500 if that. In the meantime we are freezing and AHS cannot get the diagnosis from Liberty Plumbing. I have been calling (since the beginning of March and now is the 29th)AHS and they keep calling Liberty Plumbing and... Read More

Called American Home Shield to get a repair technician for my refrigerator Sunday night. They said I should get a call from the technician they contracted with. Never called so I called Monday to AHS and they called the repair company, the earliest they can come would be Wednesday. I can see if this was a washer/dryer I can wait but a "Refrigerator". Everything in the freezer part is thawing out and spoiling. AHS said that they do not cover for lost of food. Great, we just purchased a lot of meat on that day. I asked if AHS contracted with another company, unfortunately they don't. I had another home protection plan but switched because I thought AHS would be better. Wrong move, very... Read More

AHS is the hardest company to through to. They don't have enough Customer Service Reps to answer calls, causing customer's who have paid hundreds of dollars to hold for up to 30 minutes. Yes, they have online service for warranty calls, but not all calls are simple requests. AHS needs more people to serve their customers better.

We had several appliance issues when we purchased our home. AHS was very timely in getting the contractor out to diagnose the problems, however we had several issues with some of the chosen contractors. It took an inordinate amount of time for the parts to arrive, the diagnosis was incorrect, and we went without a functioning refrigerator for 7 weeks. We finally had a new contractor who correctly diagnosed the problem but the poor communication was frustrating. All in all, AHS was timely and I am glad we have a policy if we should ever need them again

I was pleasantly surprised with the breadth of coverage available. Being new to my area, I didn't have knowledge of qualified contractors and really appreciate the confidence of this home warranty. The process to make an appointment is simple and the communication afterward is clear and timely. Originally, I was not aware that the service charge applies to each "trade" i.e." electrical, v. plumbing, v. appliances. But, I do understand the logic. We had an ongoing problem with our dishwasher. We had to make three calls to get it finally repaired. However, we were only charged one service fee. I really appreciated that. After one year, we are very happy and will continue to use... Read More

Buyer beware for I have been waiting two months for a repair of a dishwasher. I was lied to on several times concerning this. This even went as far as to say the repair was completed and they never came to look at it. I wish I could get a refund. If you don't have them run for your life
