Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

This is my first home so I have no comparison to any other home warranty program. That being said, I've used my home warranty 3 times now in the last 3 months, so I guess it's paid off in that respect. However, I do have some big complaints. First, I hate not talking to a person. I don't want an automated system that makes you hit 45 buttons to get a representative on the line. Second, the process for assigning a repair company seems to be completely random and nonsensical; for instance: for my heater repair, they assigned an HVAC company from a city 45min away. I live in major metropolitan Tucson and there are plenty of local companies that they could have assigned. But then... Read More

Absolutely unsatisfactory. Excruciatingly long telephone hold times. Confrontative first-line customer service people. Refusal to admit to any possibility of AHS responsibility for lost or misdirected paperwork sent according to AHS instructions. Refusal to make amends by expediting re-filed claim. No concept of customer service. I DO NOT RECOMMEND. E.J. Pine Asheville, NC

We have had two appliances that have needed serviced. Both the dishwasher and the washing machine have not been fixed. I have not have any issues with AHS for many years, but these two issues do not make me very happy. I am attempting to get other techs to my home to fix these appliances once and for all.

The worker a arrived on time, knew immediately what was wrong with my appliance, did not have the part on hand; ordered it and when it was shipped I was notified and an appointment was made to do the repair which was 100% successful.

Don't waste your money with this company. It's a rip-off. I paid the 460 dollars for the ' coverage'. I called regarding my microwave door. The spring/tension rod broke causing the door to drop breaking the glass. Tech showed up and explained to me the whole door will be replaced. Great! But hold on. I even told the tech that all it needed is spring/tension rod. The Tech even told me I can throw the microwave door out! He explained to me 5-7 business days a NEW door will be replaced. Guess what American Home Scam calls me 8 days later to told me they not be replacing the door??? Coverage denied. Now after 6 phone , placed on hold a total time of 45 minutes, 5 different and I assume 3... Read More

This time was a clogged impeller on the pool system...the technician fixed that problem, and was recalled when a leak was noticed in the same area of the impeller. The technician ended up replacing motor bearings, "0" rings, and other parts to put the pump system back to "new" operating condition. Not only was the initial problem fixed, but other problems the technician found were corrected. We have been with AHS for almost 30 years, and I can't remember a service call that didn't get corrected in a timely manner. As I told Sears when I bought a new appliance...."I don't need your extended warranty....I have AHS"

Normally, I place service calls for non emergent repairs, and this is handled well. HOWEVER, the first time it is urgent (washer won't spin, water collecting, smelling, renters can't do laundry) I could not get a tech any sooner than a WEEK out! VERY disappointed.

Please don't make my mistake and read their contract very carefully. They use some very ambiguous language to protect themselves from having to cover repairs they don't want to. The beginning of the contract reads like you are truly covered for many repairs, but then towards the bottom is where they throw in language that they will interpret in their favor to help them deny claims.

We had our first opportunity to use our AHS Warranty service recently. Our ice maker in our refrigerator stopped working. At the same time our washing machine was making a terrible nose in the fast spin cycle. So we had AHS look at both. The service provider sent to us was very timely and communicative. He was able to fix the ice maker on the spot. The repairs to the washing machine had to be reviewed by AHS and they decided it was more economical to just give us a replacement. We chose to buy one ourselves and took the cash in lieu quoted to us. We were very please with AHS and appliance repair provider they engaged for our service!

Dealing with American Home Shield is a task. Setting up an appointment for service is easy but if you have to follow up with them it takes a great deal of time and effort. I recently had a plumbing problem that requried three visists to finnally correct. American Home Shield took the side of the provider over me their member. I had a leak in a kitchen sink. On his first visit the plumber said that it was the facuet and it needed to be replaced, which was fully covered after my deductable. After he was finished the leak continued. The company sent the same plumber out the second time, this time he said that it was the shut off valves that needed to be replace and that it was not the same... Read More
