Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

I received great customer but my last two experience with representatives bill pruitt and pam she didn't give me her last name were horribly and they would not solve my problem, which was two technician from k&s plumbing came to my house on two visits to fix the same issue, but one fixed the problem and the other didn't saying it was my pipes and ahs denied the first claim so now I have to pay 75.00 twice for the same problem with the only solution to my problem is that I should have read my contract is what they are telling me. However I don't understand because when I spoke with a k&s associate they read the notes and told me I should speak with a manager at ahs because they could... Read More

If I could give a 0 star rating, I would. I have been in my house now, in Western PA for 4 weeks with NO HEAT. I have 5 small kids, I have called 4 times. The first time I got a contractor out who took 2 hours to even figure out our heating system (he was a HVAC contractor...um what????), bleed our radiators, said it was fixed and left. No more than 8 hours later, there was no heat again. I called back to the contractor and he said to call the American Home Shield again. I did and they "dispatched" him to come back out. He called me the next day and said the he could only come before 12 because he had no clue what was going on and he didn't want to work after 3 because American Home... Read More

My garage door was messed up came to find out they only repair the door handle mechanism and not the door itself. I am especially pissed because I have to pay a service fee of 125 dollars despite my door not being repaired. Remind me why I need this insurance again ?? Call them first and confirm your whole unit is covered, only a portion might be covered despite having their best plan.

I would not recommend an AHS warranty! The plan makes it sound like they are going to replace your equipment, but THEY DO NOT! THEY ONLY DO REPAIRS. They will fix only the thing that is broken and nothing else. For Example: We had a heat pump that stopped working (cooling). They came out and found the a leak in the evaporator. They removed the coils and SOLDERED it and put it back (NOTE: The unit was severely rusted and falling apart and really should have been REPLACED, but not AHS! After it was replaced, the coolant needed to be replaced. Oh... They don't pay for all the coolant, only a little bit. 400.00 later it worked. Seven months later.... a switch went out,... Read More

My experience with American Home Shield has been terrible and I would rate as close to a total sham. If you actually go to the BBB entry for AHS, you will find that they have a 94% negative rating (2% neutral, and 3% positive). This should already give you a sense of the type of company they are. Let me make this more specific. With AHS you pay a yearly/monthly premium to ensure systems and appliances in your home against failures. You may think that this is great as the premiums are relatively affordable. However, what is not stated up front is the process you have to follow if you ever want to file a claim, e.g., because your water heater broke-down. Unlike what, say, car... Read More

I have been with this company for over 6 years and am changing companies. When I have had simple repairs, they take care of them no problem with my $100.00 service fee. When however there is a repair that goes beyond a simple repair, be prepared for a BIG fight. Financially, it makes no sense to have this insurance. This insurance is for catastrophic events. In the 6+ years I have been insured with American Home Shield, I have experienced 3 of these events. For each of these, I have had to fight for months to get them to cover the expenses. Not right! It is time to try a different company.

I purchased a home and had AHS as the 1 year service included in the purchase. The A/C upstairs went out so I called, they sent a service tech out, Paid the 75.00 Fee he replaced a part, A/C worked for 1 month and went out again, I called AHS again, literally the same tech came out from AirMack, and said the compressor shorted out?! another 75.00 fee, he replaced it but I had to pay for the Freon which came to over 400.00 because AHS doesn't cover Freon. The A/C works but the tech forgot that he was the one that came out before, because he told me they should have replaced the compressor the last time. I'm thinking AHS told him to just get it running and leave the compressor until it... Read More

Horrible Service. I have never not experience such a bad service from a company in my life. You cannot talk to AHS without waiting for an hour on the phone, There is no email or online chat and cancellation option in their website. It's the worst.

Contacted American Home Shield today after waking to cold water only. They initially said they would have plumber call me but an hour or so later they called to inform me they do not cover leaks. Because there was water in the overflow pan it was considered a leak. Every water heater I've had that has gone out is leaking, that's the problem, its worn out. You can take these home warranties and place them where the sun don't shine. I'll never again buy one.
