Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

The technician called prior to arriving to inform me that he was enroute. He arrived pretty much on time of scheduled appointment. Technician showed me his ID. He was dressed appropriately, was professional and courteous and resolved the problem quickly.

I recently had my AC service, I found submitting the request to be easy and efficient, the service provider provided prompt attention to my needs, along with great service.

Up until now, the contractor I had at my house came on time. Very professional and did a good and fast service.

We call them and they have the company give us a call. If the warranty is not covered by it we pay for it. I'm fine with that.

AHS contracts extremely poor and cheap plumbers and they aren't even local. I had the most humiliating experience with them when I tried to have a faucet leak fixed. They contracted T&N (Check their reviews on Yelp). They guys are so cheap and so incompetent, they couldn't fix the leak in a month an a half. When I complained, they turned me into the problem maker and accused me of being abusive with T&N. They believed everything T&N told them and completely dismiss me. Calling customer service is a complete waste of time. To get someone of the phone, you need to literally spend hours on hold only to be told there is nothing they can do because that's the only way to keep their job. I... Read More

I have been with AHS for two years and always made allowances for problems with dealing with service issues. I think the biggest issue for me is the lack of professionalism shown by several of the contractors. Contractors show up for the first visit and take their service fee. You then have to chase them up to come back and complete repairs. It appears to be normal to have to wait a month or more for repairs to be completed. The quality of the contractors sent out by AHS is often low. I have gone online after visits and found that many of the companies have low ratings or have recently changed their names from a very low rated company with the same address. Two plumbers in... In reading the other reviews it seems that the individuals that have had AHS for a number of years are the ones who really know what this company is all about. I have had AHS for 5 years now. They have had to come out to fix a toilet that leaks - the same toilet for separate times. I even had one plumber tell my daughter that it's normal for a toilet to leak. He didn't even touch the toilet. In the four plumbers that have come out Rooter Man are the only ones how stopped the leak. Well it's leaking again and the plumber who came out yesterday couldn't fix it because of an adhesive substance that was used by one of the prior plumbers that AHS has sent out. AHS informed me that they... Read More

I have been an American Home Shield customer for 30 years. This month I had to submit a request for repair for a leak in a pipe that was located under a slab. The first plumbing company they sent out were unable to do the job. I took a day off of work to wait for them. The second plumbing company that was contracted took one week to come to "evaluate" the repair (again having to take the time off from work to wait for them) and then one more week to do the repair and another day off from work. This of course left two holes in my walls which meant another company had to come to repair the holes. This took another week and numerous phone calls to AHS to request repair. Finally, a... Opened claim online via the AHS portal, very easy to navigate and efficient. My contractor immediately came up, along with contact numbers. As promised the contractor reached out to schedule the appointment within 24 hours, arrived on time and completed the work efficiently.
