Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Healthy Paws has been nothing short than a life saver. My 1 1/2 year old French Bulldog suffered from numerous random medical issues and recently was dignaosed with IBD. Needless to say their were many tears and more vet visits but what was constant and dependable was his coverage with HP. My claims have always been quickly processed and payments issued. The one thing I never worried about was if I could afford to get my sweet boy healthy. Getting HP insurance was by far the best decision I made. Also their app is very easy to use and submitting claims takes a few minutes. Thank you HP for being an amazing company that truly loves our pets.

Healthy Paws definitely deserves a 5 Starr rating. They respond quickly and professionally with questions regarding claims. My Newfoundland had back to back surgeries for knee injuries. They not only took care of the claims they even inquire on his healing process. They truly care for animals. This also shows in the amount of funding they also provide to homeless and rescued pets. The rates are also agreeable. Check them out!

Our dog was so close to death. We didn’t know if we could afford to keep her alive. But thanks to you, Healthy Paws, we were able to keep her alive. She won’t pass for a long time now.

We have healthy paws for our 3 year old German Shepherd. They have been wonderful to work with. We have never had an issue. It is very easy to submit claims on the app and we get a response within days! They cover way more than most pet insurance and there is no caps. Stella just recently tore her acl and healthy paws approved the claim in 2 days. Wonderful pet insurance and customer service.

Healthypaws has just been a lifesaver for me! My three year old Yorkshire Terrier, Indiana, has torn both of his hind ACLs and had to undergo a total of 3 surgeries -- and they were a small fortune! Thankfully, healthypaws has been there for us and reimbursed me at a 90% level. If I did not have healthypaws, I would not have been able to get Indy the physical rehabilitation he needed for months after each surgery, which was also covered at 90%! I've recommended healthypaws to everyone I know that gets a new pup -- I think it is the best insurance out there :) Their customer service team also sends emails to check up on Indy post-surgery and see how he is doing -- it is a nice personal... My huskimo got very sick and it was going to cost us 2,000 to get her healthy again. Healthy Paws covered 80% of it excluding the exam fee and what was left on my $250 deductible (this is the reason for the 1/2 star). My girl is healthy again! Healthy Paws made it possible for us to afford the care that she needed. And they even checked up on her a couple of weeks later to ask how she was doing. They have already covered FAR beyond what we pay monthly. So worth it. One of the best decisions we made!

Healthy Paws is absolutely the BEST - we were thrilled at the ease of filing a claim, the speed of the processing and the reimbursement! The customer care associates are helpful and compassionate and most knowledgeable of the insurance - they are willing and able to answer any and all questions. We are telling everyone we know who owns a pet to get Healthy Paws insurance. They will be glad that they did. Our recent claim was resolved in just over a week!

If you're considering pet insurance, give this company a serious look. The terms of coverage are flexible to fit your budget, and simple to understand. They have an associated smartphone app that makes it really easy to take a picture of a claim for submission. And they have a fast claims process turn around. So when your furry baby has an expensive procedure, like an ultrasound (speaking from experience), you don't wait long for reimbursement. I wish my health insurance was as simple and straightforward as this.

Before signing up for Healthy Paws, I did some pretty careful research on Pet Insurance to try to find the best insurance for my Papillion. I had previously purchased pet insurance for our other dog, a Chihuahua, and was disappointed with the coverage. I realized choosing the best pet insurance for my Papillion from Day 1 would be advantageous so I would not be stuck with “pre existing” conditions if I chose to switch insurance down the road. Nearly four years went by before I needed to utilize my pet insurance from our Papillion. I had been traveling abroad and while I was gone, my Papillion had swallowed a foreign body and it became lodged in her small intestines. At the same... Read More
