Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

In January of 2016 we rescued our first pup from the county animal shelter - a 5 month old lab/pit mix that my girlfriend and I named Gaston. We picked up all the necessary items from the pet store and did what we could to make him comfortable, but as an insurance broker, I thought it would be a good idea to consider pet insurance for him. After speaking with a few underwriters from other companies (as well as reviewing their financial backers), we decided on Healthy Paws. For visits and normal preventative care, they do not provide coverage, and we were ok with that as those costs are minimal anyways. However, we (as well as our pup) have been very fortunate to have obtained coverage for... Read More

Getting Healthy Paws insurance was probably one of my top ten best decisions of 2017. It's affordable, covers a lot... honestly I was wondering 'what's the catch?' My cat was acting strange one day and my stomach dropped when my usual vet office advised me to take him to an emergency center immediately. They needed to run some major tests to figure out what the problem could be (a laundry list of possible ailments that had me ready to flip out) and then they told me how much it would all cost. I really can't describe the relief of being able to say yes to the tests knowing that I was backed up by HP. Even the veterinarian was relieved I had insurance lol. Putting in the claim was... To Heather & the folks at Healthy Paws: I only have had this policy for a year and a half - that is when I adopted my little Scout. Tragically, in February, she was diagnosed with cancer, and since then, as you know, she has had numerous medical procedures - including major surgery to remove a large mediastinal mass. Just want to let you all know that I view my experience with Healthy Paws thus far as wonderful. Thank you all so much for handling my claim competently, fairly and expediently. Since discovering my precious little friend has cancer, I am not certain that I could have death with any complications regarding insurance claims. You all have been terrific, and my family and I... Healthy Paws saved my wallet and quite possibly my Maine Coon Hunter :) Was devastated when he was diagnosed with cancer 2 months ago...and he's needed radiation and chemotherapy - lots of tests and blood work -- and there was Healthy Paws each step making it easy to submit claims and sending reimbursements quickly. I was at the Animal Hospital and saw a family torn apart because they could not afford treatment for their pet....I feel incredibly lucky to have learned about Healthy Paws and can't recommend them enough. (PS my Hunter is going great....hoping that he has a couple more fun years left in him)

Healthy paws saved us on more than one occasion! I was skeptical about having pet insurance after seeing how insurance is going in general. We researched insurance companies for pets for several months and were glad that we did! Last year, our fur baby had a lump removed off the back of her leg, covered 90% of a $1,000 surgery. I thought wow is this real!? Then three weeks later, our wonderful puppy decided to bark while chewing and developed aspirated pneumonia, $1,500 covered 90%. Did I mention I was also on maternity leave with our first?! Fast forward four months she develops a lump in her tummy under her ribs...back to surgery, covered 90% of $1,500 bill. I was extremely happy then... Read More

Healthy Paws has been incredibly helpful and provided fantastic service in times of crisis. Their pet insurance policies are affordable, and easy-to-use once you have a crisis you need help with. My pup swallowed a tennis ball and it got stuck in his intestines and needed surgery. It was incredibly expensive and an overwhelming time as he needed so much care. I was really happy and grateful to have Healthy Paws and not have to worry about the financial burden this surgery could have caused otherwise. I unequivocally recommend their services.

At only 7-years-old, my Kitty girl recently had surgery for a knee luxation and hip replacement. Healthypaws not only cover this fully but also reached out to me to check on her recovery. I just want to express my gratitude for Healthy Paws. Purchasing this plan has given me peace of mind when it comes to providing the best care for my baby “furr" girls. I am a very happy customer, who will be forever grateful for making the smart decision of purchasing this plan. I will continue to speak highly of Healthy Paws to my family and friends. Pros-Claims processed fast, less than 10 days, convenient direct deposit to your bank account, convenient easy to use App. Peace of mind!!!

After trying multiple pet insurance companies, I am so thankful I found a partner in Healthy Paws. With others, I never felt like the investment was worth it - but with Healthy Paws, they cover the right things at an affordable monthly payment. Recently, my pet was kept overnight at the vet after getting very sick. I was pleased to see that most of that visit was covered. Had I not had Healthy Paws, that event would have been a major strain on our pockets. The Healthy Paws team even reached out a couple weeks later to check on my pet to make sure she was feeling better. Their app makes submitting claims so simple - and they reimburse you quickly! I would highly recommend Healthy Paws... Read More

When we got our little Dewey, someone mentioned that we may want to look into getting pet insurance because small dogs can have accidents. Well Healthy Paws Pet Insurance had one of the highest rankings, so I went with them, never dreaming we would need it. But our little fella did indeed have an issue with one of his legs and required quite an extensive surgery to fix it. Healthy Paws put us at ease immediately, with the assurance that the surgery would be covered. But it goes way beyond that, the people at Healthy Paws were so concerned about Dewey and always asked how he was doing. Even two weeks after his surgery and we had received our check, they were so kind to send an email... Read More
