Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I’ve had Healthy Paws for 2 years. One of my dogs needed 2 leg surgeries within 8 mos. I filed my claim and was reimbursed my coverage amount within 2 weeks. They even followed up to see how he was doing. By far, it’s the best pet insurance.

Submitting claims is super easy and reimbursement is always really quick. Plus, they follow up to check on how your pet is doing after surgery/illness/whatever. I'm super happy with them!

Thank goodness I bought Healthy Paws Pet Insurance for my puppy. She just had emergency surgery for a life threatening infection and I was able to have the expensive procedure performed knowing that Healthy Paws would reimburse me for the costs. Such a relief! They make the claim process easy and pay out quickly on the claims.

Dear Healthy Paws, Thank you for your incredible customer service and support. I am so pleased with my experience with Healthy Paws pet insurance and would recommend it to any and all pet owners. My fiancé and I went back and forth on pet insurance for many months, because we had no way of knowing if it would pay off in the long run. Charlie was 100% healthy and never had trouble with counter surfing, chewing, or eating foreign objects. I eventually enrolled our dog "just in case" because I felt it would give me the most peace of mind during what could be an extremely stressful time. I’m pleased to report that our dog now has better health insurance than me! Right before... Read More

This must be the easiest pet insurance to work with. It makes care for our pup a no brainer. We can make difficult decisions a lot easier knowing he’s covered and we won’t have to fight for reimbursement. The app is simple and very user friendly. We’ve been with Healthy Paws from day 1 and it was a great choice.

Hi, I would like to tell everyone about Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. But first I need to give you just a little background on why I’m writing this. This was our Baby Girl Shiloh. We were lucky enough to adopt her from German Shepherd Rescue of Northern California, when she was about 3 1/2 years old. She had a congenital problem with her hips not fitting in their sockets properly, and because of this had arthritis and took meds daily. We ended up adding another shepherd to our family as a companion. Blue started out with some very severe skin problems, and also had to take meds every day, we finally added a scrawny little white cat who showed up in our garage In the middle... Read More

I've been a customer with HealthyPaws for just over a year for my 2 cats. I originally chose HealthyPaws for the simplicity of the claims and because just about anything is covered after your deductible. About a month ago I finally put HealthyPaws to the test - I came home to find one of our cats had broken his foot. I'm still a bit clueless as to how he did it, but my vet and surgical specialist both recommend corrective surgery. I got an estimate from the surgeon and then called HealthyPaws. I spoke to a very compassionate person who was patient with me while I listed off everything the surgeon was going to charge me for and she confirmed everything would be covered. I used the mobile... I've had Healthy Paws for my Great Pyrenees since Sept 2013. I did a lot of research before I signed up and Healthy Paws had the best ratings. They have been great and have always processed my claims quickly and efficiently. I would highly recommend them if you are considering insurance for your pet

We've had Healthy Paws pet insurance for our cat and dog for six years and consider ourselves fortunate to have to company on our side. We chose Healthy Paws after studying what its coverage was like compared to other companies. This year, for the first time, my dog became extremely ill with pancreatitis, and the vet bills were more than we could handle. I turned the bills over to Healthy Paws and, even though I was afraid there'd be some loophole which would prevent it from covering something, the company paid everything they had agreed to. The staff is exceptionally nice and supportive - they even sent my dog a get well card! I couldn't recommend a company more.

I have had Healthy Paws for my yellow lab for the past five years. Unfortunately I've had to use it in a few emergency situations and I am very thankful that I had insurance for my fur child. I just used it last month when my dog was vomiting blood for an unknown reason and had to rush her to the ER where she stayed overnight. It was comforting knowing that with insurance I didn't have to worry about cost nearly as much and she could get the best care possible. Every claim I've submitted with Healthy Paws has been processed quickly and they have covered exactly what was agreed upon in my contract with them. I wish my personal health insurance was this easy and straight forward. I'm a... Read More
