Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Healthy Paws has been wonderful! Its the first time I ever had pet insurance and I am so happy I got it. They respond quickly to claims and send refund quickly. Also I love the fact that they check up on the pet to see how they are doing. Makes me feel like they really care. I suggest Healthy Paws to all my friends. I looked at all insurances and compared them side by side. Healthy Paws has not limit in payout for the year and only one time annual deductible. not like most that have a cap on their payouts and the deductible can be per claim. I love this insurance it was the best decision I made for my pet. Best , Sandra

My cat was attacked by a cayote 3 days after I canceled my pet insurance, in fact the day before it would have gone inactive. Obviously I was thrilled it was still in effect and realized no pet should ever be without pet insurance, especially when all seems well. They reinstated my coverage without a blip and even though the bill topped $6000, I got the reimbursement for all expenses a month later. Anytime I wrote them I got a quick response and it was easy to talk to a human if I wanted to call. What more can you ask? My cat is still recovering and will need the last follow up x-rays but he's going to be ok. Thank you for everything Healthypaws.

We had left the house for about an hour, when Rosie climbed up on the dining table and was somehow able to get hold of the Ibuprofen bottle from another shelf. It was the day I also realized that Ibuprofen bottles do not have child-proof caps. She managed to unscrew the cap and she loves eating, so she went to town with it. Thankfully we were back within the hour and immediately saw the open bottle with chewed pills strewn in her bed and rushed her to the ER. She had eaten more pills than the lethal dose for her weight! I was so scared for her but she made a full recovery thanks to the efforts of all the kind people and vets at the hospital. We also did a follow-up kidney and liver... Read More

We got Healthy Paws insurance after our Wirehaired Pointing Griffon pup was treated at the Emergency vet 3 times in his first year. We have been so happy with the coverage and excellent customer service. It’s so easy to file a claim and we have gotten reimbursed quickly! We have 2 dogs now and both are covered by Healthy Paws. I highly recommend this insurance - it’s been a lifesaver!

We have has an amazing experience with Healthy Paws insurance. Before having insurance, we had to put down our dog down at a young age due to cancer and did not have insurance to pay for the very expensive surgery (even though the chances for her to live were very slim). We now have two crazy, healthy (large) pups and pet insurance from HealthyPaws. Our girl pup has had to go to the vet/emergency room multiple times for different things including a nasty stomach bug and torn carpal pad. Thanks to pet insurance we were able to give her the best care possible! HealthyPaws provides such a great service. It is super easy to contact them, submit a claim and we received the checks in the mail... Read More

It is with the highest regard that I recommend Heathy Paws as your choice for pet insurance. They are dependable, courteous & caring. Our dog, Pepper, had been covered for almost 5 years when he was diagnosed with diabetes millitus. Quickly thereafter, he started to suffer from complications caused by the diabetes like diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) & cataracts. Pepper was hospitalized overnight with the DKA. And a month later, Pepper was afflicted with cataracts. The cataracts came on so fast that he was blinded within 3 days. He was very depressed & it was a dark time for us all (we padded the furniture with pillows so soften the blow when he ran into them). He had to rely on us... Read More

Whenever something negative occurs to your furry baby, last thing you need is more issues regarding HOW to pay for the ER visit, or what else you need to do without, to pay for such occurrences. HealthyPaws fills that part of your life, and ensures that when you need the peace of mind with your pet, they will be there to assist. Not everyone has $2,200.00 on hand to pay for an emergency, as in my case, so getting 90% (depending on your plan) of those out of pocket costs, to ensure the furry family member is well taken care of, and that life can continue in a sustainable manner, what else will help you? And caring enough to send you emails asking about your pet's state after such an... Read More

Hello, I just wanted to tell Healthy Paws that I am filled with such gratitude of the handling of my dogs most recent emergency. I cannot share enough how much having insurance and this great company has helped with my recent dog emergency. All I know is without you I wouldn’t never been able to find out what was wrong with my boy, nor could I have afforded it. I can’t even begin to imagine the consequences of not being able to pay for his help. And all I can say is that you have been wonderful! You have processed my claims on time and sent out my checks so quickly. This is allowed me to focus on after care for my dog after surgery and provided me with great comfort. Again thank you all...
