Novo is a digital banking platform serving small businesses. It offers fee-free business checking accounts to companies in all 50 states through its partnership with Middlesex Federal Savings Bank, which is based just outside of Boston. The company hopes to expand into other business banking services in the future, including business loans.

Account Features

Novo offers a single, fee-free online business checking account aimed at small businesses. All account holders receive an EMV-chipped debit card for maximum security and easy access to your business's funds. It aims to keep business banking simple and affordable for the average small- to mid-size business owner. It succeeds in providing a transparent fee schedule and an intuitive online account management platform. Unlike the business bank accounts offered by many large brick-and-mortar banks, you don't have to wade through a lot of fine print to understand what you're getting. 

Novo business checking customers can send, track, and otherwise manage invoices directly from their accounts. They can also accept invoice payments from their customers via credit or debit card. No more waiting for the check that's "in the mail." And the company offers recurring payments for Novo Invoicing.

Novo accounts stand out for helping businesses get paid—a foremost goal that's sometimes fraught with challenges. New for 2022 is a feature called Novo Boost. With Novo Boost, customers can access payments made through Stripe 95% faster than before with no fees assessed. Through Novo Boost, Novo helps businesses improve their cash flow position so they can pay their vendors, themselves, and their employees on time, without risking late payment fees. Many small business owners are forced to dip into their personal funds when cash flow issues come up. Novo Boost helps business owners avoid that headache.

Novo also helps business account holders manage their finances by incorporating a feature called "Novo Reserves." The feature acts like an account-in-an-account and allows users to segregate funds in separate virtual folders. Novo Reserves can be used to separate operating dollars from funds set aside to pay taxes, for example. The feature affords customers improved visibility into their finances and greater convenience by putting more data at their fingertips in one centralized place.

Fees and Restrictions

Novo offers one of the most affordable business checking accounts out there. Like most digital banks, not having brick-and-mortar locations reduces overhead costs, and Novo is able to pass those savings on to you by slashing fees. There are no monthly service fees or minimum balance, though you need at least $50 to open a Novo business checking account. It also doesn't charge customers for incoming or outgoing ACH transfers, or domestic or foreign wire transfers, which isn't something most banks can say. The only fee you could ncur is a $27 uncollected funds returned fee.

Novo offers up to $7 ATM fee refunds per month when you withdraw cash from ATMs anywhere in the country. You're limited to a maximum of $1,000 in ATM withdrawals per day, which is pretty typical for the industry.

Account Management and Support

Novo is a digital bank with strong online account management features. From your online account, you can view your balance and transaction history, easily transfer funds to other linked bank accounts, deposit checks remotely, and receive alerts about suspicious activity on your business debit card. The company offers an iPhone app currently, and an Android app is in the works so you can manage your account from any device.

You can integrate your Novo business checking account with several popular business applications, including Stripe, Quickbooks, Amazon and Xero. The company is also working on adding new integrations so you can link your business checking account with any business tools you use. You can also use your Novo debit card with Google or Apple Pay if you don't want to pull out your card every time you need to make a purchase. Few other business checking accounts offer integrations like these, so move Novo up on your list if you're interested in these.

Reputation and Financials

Novo Bank has only been around since 2016, so it's not as widely known as other business checking account providers yet. It doesn't have any Better Business Bureau (BBB) or TrustPilot reviews, but this will likely change as the company continues to expand its offerings. With its simple account management, integrations and minimal fees, it won't be long before its star begins to rise.

Its partner bank, Middlesex Financial Savings, is FDIC-insured, which means that the money you place in your business checking account is protected up to $250,000. In the unlikely event of bank failure, you won't lose any of your funds. But this shouldn't concern most people as this bank has been around since 1890 and continues to look strong.

I woke up to see two charges that I did not authorize on my Novo account this morning- Colony Travel for $2,783 and Colony Travel for $2000, both went through yesterday. After reading these comments, I am afraid I will never see these funds again. I immediately transferred my money to my personal account at a different bank (won't go through until Monday) and hope that gets out. Who has a contact to report this to?

This is the worst bank I have ever dealt with. Save yourself the trouble. Their customer service is nonexistent, there are so many issues with their software that you constantly need customer service, and...well, you see the problem. They rejected perfectly fine checks that I tried to deposit because their online system determined that they had been altered--but they literally had not been. Customer service told me to get another check and try again. How about you get a better system? I've deposited dozens of checks with other banks via mobile deposit with no issue.

I highly DON'T recommend them! I opened up a simple business account, just to see if they were good as some said they were. It took a couple months for me to actually put money in the checking account. I had a gut feeling that they weren't going to provide good convenient service after reading information on them.. One day final said I'm try using the checking account and start out with a couple small checks ($10.00, and $280.00) to see how long it take for them to clear, cheers to my gut feeling, My gut feeling was right! It took those small checks that I deposit a whole week individually to clear (Both were deposited at separate times)! Another thing that is considered poor customer... Read More

BEWARE. I have wasted hours upon hours of my time trying to accomplish basic banking tasks with Novo. For example, I needed my debit card replaced and called the number listed on their site for that specific task. The woman who answered asked me what company I was trying to reach (it seemed like she didn't actually work for Novo and was handling calls for a bunch of different companies), she couldn't locate my account, and said she couldn't help me. After several frustrating interactions like that with them, I found a new, better bank. Horrible bank, cant speak to live people only email. Response times on email are 4-5 days minimum. They allowed fraudulent charges go through a card that I canceled. They sided with the fraudulent merchant over their customer. Took the fraudulent charge as a business loss and closed the account. Businesses beware

My experience with Novo is the same as the others listed here. Deposited $500 from my paypal account. Confirmed with paypal it went through. See the $500 on Novo account under activity but my available funds never changed. I opened 7 support cases and get the generic reply that it takes 3 business days. Its been well over that and now they just dont reply. This is not the bank to use. Any monthly fees you may be charged elsewhere is worth it. I am going to report them to the federal reserve. If everyone who is experiencing the same reports them they may be forced to investigate and do something.

Terrible bank. They initially always reject checks signed using a "Unique Character Facsimile Signature", causing a delay, then requiring you to resubmit the check upon contacting support. The check is eventually deposited. Also, it takes much too long for checks to clear. I'd reco another bank.

Not a bank. A tech startup with non-existent to horrible customer service. Randomly closes people’s accounts and will deny nee applications without explanation other than “high risk”. I guess having a Hispanic last name is risky for this discriminatory business. Smh

I am sad to say that I have been forced to report Novo to the Federal Reserve. I had 2 fraudulent charges to my account in April. I reported them and heard nothing for months. When I contacted the bank, they told me they have 120 days to investigate and there was nothing they could do until that time passed. Over 120 days went by and still I heard nothing. I contacted the bank again and was told they would check with the dispute department and get back to me. Another week went by and still nothing. I sent more messages asking for an update and a phone number where I could speak with a person. Another week went by with me writing every few days and calling the number on the back of my debit...
