Family-owned Open Farm's mission is to create healthy food for dogs and cats in an environmentally sustainable way. To this end, they obtain their meat solely from Certified Humane farms, use seasonal, wild caught fish, and even partnered with a recycling firm to launch the first North American pet food bag recycling program. With this program, UPS picks up the bags at the owner's home and sends them to be recycled for free.

The company makes three different kinds of food: wet food, kibble, and freeze-dried patties. Open Farm recipes are impressively clean: they contain no fillers, preservatives, or chemicals. Additionally, they use fresh, non-GMO and organic vegetables in many recipes. Another draw is Open Farm's commitment to transparency. The company's website lists every single ingredient's source. Ingredients are sourced both domestically and internationally. Prices vary depending on the type of food you select, with wet food at the high end of the menu. No matter which food you choose, prices are certainly higher than for regular commercial kibble. But for people who want to feed their dogs a whole-food-based diet and who value environmental safety, Open Farm could be an excellent investment to make in your dog's health, as well as in the planet's.

Open Farm Recipes

Menu Options - 4.5 / 5

Open Farm's offers wet, dry, and freeze-dried food. All of their recipes are free of gluten, preservatives, fillers, and use humanely raised livestock from family farms. In fact, their website lists the source of every ingredient they use and its source. The ingredients are recognizable for the most part, and they are formulated to meet AAFCO guidelines for all life stages.

Recently, the nutrient taurine has been in the news. Taurine deficiency has been implicated in heart problems, especially in large-breed dogs. Grain-free wet foods such as Open Farm offers, do not naturally contain sufficient taurine. Some grain-free foods are fortified with taurine to make them healthier. But we noted that Open Farm grain-free wet food recipes are not augmented that way. So you may want to stick to the company's grain-inclusive kibble recipes.

Open Farm does not customize food. However, dogs who have food sensitivities and allergies can indulge in recipes that are less likely to irritate them. Lamb and salmon are among the less-allergenic flavors that Open Farm offers. Always check the nutritional details on any food you give your dog to be sure you're not feeding them ingredients that may aggravate their tummies or skin.

Concerned about my dog and his allergies, and him being a senior dog, I have done a lot of research - I decided on Open Farm plant based diet kibble since I thought it would be more convenient than another visit to his vet clinic - I can order online. So bc of seemingly great reviews popping up all over the net, I ordered direct - ti support a Canadian company. I ordered the Whitefish kibble, which has an expiry of 2025, a good expiry date and a properly vacuum sealed bag. This was just for treats - the other two was for the plant based kibble which I was so happy to find - however both bags had the same expiry date for the end of the month! Plus both bags were not properly vacuum sealed -... Read More

Terrible fraudster company. I made an order online, over $100, they then cancelled it for no reason ever able to explain and didn’t refund or contact me. I had to follow up w them. Then they resend order but send it to complete wrong address not even on the order. So it’s been wks now and I’m still out $100 but no dog food. Basic theft.

Customer service is terrible, but my dog loves the food. They were helpful when I could get them on the phone but now it's been days with no response by phone or ema, and I'm waiting for a refund!

Friends ordered their frozen Gently Cooked brand food -- which was shipped without anything to keep it frozen (i.e. no ice paks, etc.) -- it arrived already starting to thaw. Their dogs love the food and it seems to be a really good quality one, but the company hasn't responded to numerous attempts to get them to acknowledge the problem and fix it. It is really unfortunate. They want to keep buying the product because of the quality but if the customer service is poor, and they can't figure out how to keep the frozen product from thawing during shipment, there's not a lot of incentive to stay loyal to the company. It's possible the company will make things right but so far radio silence... Read More

We have been feeding Open Farm to our English Goldens for years. Here are the primary reasons why: Because our Golden's are in top shape. Because they love dogs as much as we do and are committed to doing what's right for them. Because of what the brand stands for in terms of truly healthy food, full transparency, environmental care, and support of humane farming practices. Because we have spoken to the owners and founders by phone and they are sincere, ethical, concerned about doing what's right, and simply good, honest people who will not compromise their purpose and values for the sake of profit. Because we trust the brand and the people who own and manage it.
