VRBO is a travel search engine which is a registered trademark of HomeAway.com. It offers information on over 2 million house rentals worldwide with more than 25,000 pet-friendly properties to choose from. It also provides detailed listings on properties such as those with free baby and kid amenities.

Services and Features

VRBO makes searching for a vacation rental simple by letting you enter a destination and travel dates. It also has search filters which lets travellers narrow down results. Travellers can inquire on 3 or more properties which increases their chance of booking. It also has a “Book it Now” option to select a listing.

The company ensures that the money spent vacation is covered with its Cancellation and Damage Protection. This covers non-refundable refundable trip costs in case customers need to cancel their trip due to selected reasons. Typically, vacation rental payments become non-refundable 30 to 90 days in advance of the arrival date. With Cancellation Protection, consumers can insure their trip cost of up to $50,000 if they need to cancel and reimburse due to covered events such as flight cancellations, mandatory evacuation, job loss, injury, sickness, and more.

Damage Protection helps travellers be protected against expenses incurred due to accidentally damage a vacation rental property. This can reimburse travellers if their refundable damage deposit is withheld due to a covered loss. Coverage is offered starting from $59 up to $1,500 with no deductible.

Book a condo in South Padre Island back in May 2019. While on route from Canada we received a text from the property manager canceling our 4 week rental. We are totally shocked that VRBO would allow such a short notice cancellation. We could only find a few replacement properties at triple the $ of canceled unit. So much for the relaxing vacation, we are now heading home. Read the fine print; as a consumer you have no protection from VRBO.

I booked a rental property through VRBO and cancelled two days later. Obtaining the refund of the $499 service fee was a nightmare. I called the property owners and they happily cancelled on their end. I contacted VRBO and they told me the property manager uses their own system managing reservations and I would have to contact them. I spoke to the property manager several times and they ensured it it was cancelled on their end. I went back and fourth with VRBO for almost 2 weeks. I had numerous special cases opened and was told SEVERAL different things, not one representative said the same thing . I was told I would be contacted a few different times after they had time to review my case... Read More

I have been a customer of VRBO since 2009. It WAS a great company. I said WAS. Since Homeaway took them over, then Yapstone INC took over collecting rental income funds, then Expedia took them all over and decided to take over collections everything is just one big circle jerk for owners and guest. My own experience (just today_) were I spend 4-5 hours trying to fix an issue created by Homeaway/Yapstone 4 years ago has reappeared and is worse. Funds are not be collected. Emails are not being sent. Payments are not getting paid But Worse WORSE is that HomeAway had made it nearly impossible to get any real help. Customer service is the only number you can call. They are all so fustrated... Read More

I never received check-in instructions for the condo I reserved through VRBO in Cabo and thus I was forced to cancel a long-planned extended family Holiday celebration at virtually the last minute. I have used VRBO for 14 properties since 2014, so I know the owner is supposed to provide information a week prior to check-in. After not receiving that info, I emailed the owner repeatedly with no success and when I called "his number" I got a message that no voicemail box had been set up. I called the resort and was told there was NO reservation for me. I started contacting VRBO several days before I was supposed to leave. They too could not contact the "owner." So I cancelled my trip,... Read More

I’m really sorry, but the owners have decided they want to use the condo during the dates you requested. Im going to block January off now. I got it one day after I booked my reservation, so they sell you what they don't have. They do not deserve one star.

MY RECENT EXPERIENCE WITH VRBO WAS APALLING, MY COUSINS FROM ENGLAND RENTED A PROPERTY IN LONG BEACH, NEW YORK FOR A FAMILY REUNION. UNKNOWN TO US SHE HAD A PROBLEM WITH A NEIGHBOR WHO DID NOTHING BUT CALL THE OWNER WITH COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE PROPERTY AND FELT THAT THE PROPERTY WAS IN DANGER, WITH THIS THE OWNER EVICTED MY COUSINS. VRBO DID NOTHING TO FIND ACCOMODATIONS FOR THESE WOMEN THEY WERE TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO AND WERE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR A REFUND OR ANOTHER PLACE FOR THEM TO STAY. PLEASE BE AWARE OF THIS WHEN BOOKING THROUGH VRBO (HOME AWAY) ESPECIALLY TO ANOTHER COUNTRY, IF I DID NOT LIVE NEARBY THESE WOMEN BE BE HOMELESS. PLEASE BEWARE... YOU HAVE NO RIGHTS... Read More

I've had an unfair experience recently. We stayed at a Panama City Beach (Top of the Gulf) unit last week. I voiced issues when I first arrived. I then wrote an honest review when we left. The owner did not like our review and decided to trash me by giving me all one star ratings as a tenant. My review was honest. Hers was revenge. Since this can impact me financially, I am not happy about it. Is there a way to get the rating removed?

I am an owner with a property listed on VRBO. They 'incorrectly' listed my home (and several others) in their site search criteria under a neighboring upscale community. We were unaware of this issue until a renter brought it to our attention. This renter relied on VRBO's search criteria thinking they were renting a home in this community. When arriving at our home (located in a different community) they were upset and posted a negative review as 'if' we as owners had falsely listed our home this way. VRBO has been asked to fix their error (they haven't). They have been asked to remove review against our home for their issue (they haven't). They have been asked to reach out to this... Read More

I wanted to book a pace in Sydney quoted at $110usd p/n. When hitting the book button the rate jumped to $160usdp/n. Why? This happened with all properties I looked at. My stay was 8 nights so I thought an apartment would be a better option to a hotel. I'll never recommend this site to anyone.

I had a MISERABLE stay, due to the fact that one of the beds in the unit was OVER 40 inches tall. My wife and I had to sleep on the floor, which caused me extreme pain in my back. I am seeing a doctor for the pain at a cost of over $200. I am NOT happy, since I was NOT able to do anything in Lake Tahoe, I could not stand for long periods or walk, so my stay consisted of watching t.v. in the unit for the WHOLE FIVE DAYS, because of the pain! THIS SITUATION RUINED MY STAY and I have NOT heard from VRBO, TURNKEY (who was the manager of the unit) or the OWNERS!!!! I would rate this LOWER than a ONE if I could!!! The t.v. did not work for two days, until they sent a repairman! Terrible visit!
