HireRight benefits from its enormous size and nearly three decades of experience in the background check business. It's a truly global company, one that does business with large Fortune 100 corporations and small businesses alike. It offers the broadest possible array of background check services. However, the relatively recent history of lawsuits and regulatory actions against it may give many customers pause—especially since HireRight has attempted to impute the liability for its inaccurate background checks to the companies that hire them. No information is available about HireRight's pricing structure, so this potential point of comparison cannot be evaluated. For consumers who need a background check company with global reach and an unusually broad range of investigative services, HireRight may be a plausible choice. But until the company demonstrates that it has tightened up its quality control and legal compliance, prospective customers may wish to look elsewhere.

HireRight Company Reputation

Reputation - 3.5 / 5

Although HireRight is a major player in the background check market, it and its parent company have been defendants in numerous individual and class action consumer lawsuits and in federal regulatory actions. In 2012, 2014, and 2016, the company was named in several lawsuits, which alleged that HireRight had violated the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) by failing to delete records of expunged criminal convictions and failing to supply the subjects of background checks with copies of their reports, among other infractions. In 2015, its parent company, Altegrity, reached a $30 million settlement with the US Department of Justice for failing to conduct quality reviews of completed background checks. Subsequently, Altegrity declared bankruptcy and was merged into Kroll, Inc.

Perhaps to some extent this is a product of the company's enormous size, since larger companies have more customers and therefore are exposed to larger risks from errors. However, the portrait that emerges from these legal actions is of a company that has had substantial problems in ensuring the accuracy of its background reports and in complying with the consumer rights provisions of the FCRA.

More disturbingly, the company has defended itself in claims that it provided grossly inaccurate and defamatory information on people by arguing that it had no responsibility to pay damages when those people were fired from their positions on the basis of the inaccurate information. The company argued that it was just a harmless "middleman," since it did not fire those employees itself. This argument is, at its core, a claim that the company does not stand behind the accuracy of its background screenings.

Although the company has been reorganized somewhat since the 2015 bankruptcy of its parent company, Altegrity, its history of serious errors and violations of the FCRA is only a few years behind it. It's not clear whether HireRight has taken steps to improve its compliance with the FCRA and the accuracy of its reports. The company's reputation at this point is questionable at best.

First let me talk about the only positive thing about the company: their customer service! They were great every time I called. The wait time was always less than 5 min. and I could call at any time during the day or evening. Now the negative: They are extremely slow! I had to research information myself and send it to them to speed up the process! Their research team is terrible. I felt as if there was a disconnect between the customer service team and the research team. The research team kept repeating the same mistake again and again and again until I just couldn't take it any more. I had to call my initial hiring company to let them know what was going on. HireRight took 4 weeks to... Read More

Can I leave ZERO stars? This company is the very definition of incompetence. They treat you like a criminal when they're too LAZY to actually verify your employment. I gave them the name of my previous employer - WITH their contact info!!! - and for whatever reason, they tried to contact some other company with a similar name, then reported back on my official report to my prospective new employer that they couldn't verify my prior employment! Are you joking?! Of COURSE they couldn't verify me when they're calling some random company, not the one where I actually worked! Also, and this is hugely important: DO NOT give them your salary info! There is no legitimate reason to request your W2s... Read More

I have been subjected to a background check by this company. I am not a user who has hired them. Their processes are poor at best. I am a nearly 60 year old who was asked to provide a High School Diploma/Transcript (40 years ago). Not sure about the rest of you, but this is not something I have kept. The generic email I received indicated they were not able to get in touch with anyone on the phone (Its called Covid). I went online to the School District website and right there on the front page was a link for verification for employers. Really??? I would not use them and if you get to be on the verification side, good luck unless you have all your old W-2s and records of everything... Read More

Make you do all the work yourself. Inconsistent guidance from every customer service rep you talk to. Couldn't verify employment at a global Fortune 100 company. Incompetence at it's finest. Very frustrating to deal with the rollercoaster of emotions knowing your new job is "contingent" on passing this. Quite the hassle.

The verification of information is spotty at best. Twice, I have undergone checks with HR and both times, there were issues in verifying my work history, in spite of sending proof from the IRS that I had reported earnings reported under my SSN from TINs tied to pervious employers. You get what you pay for... and this service is garbage. You'd be better off flipping a coin than wasting time, or placing faith in inaccurate/incomplete results, with HR.

Went through the background check for employment with these clowns. They could not verify my High School education even though I sent them scan of the original document. They reported it to my company as unverified and did not even include the scan in the documentation they sent to my employer. I had to provide that again to my employer. INCOMPETENT! Good luck if you have to use them.

On January 09, 2020 a background report was requested for an employer. on January 16, 2020 the request was completed and HireRight reported my education record as Closed - Unable to Verify. They attempted to request my high school transcript from my school, although I graduated prior to 2013, meaning the actual school no longer has the record, but the school board does (record retentions). As per their investigation, they were given a turn around time of 72 business hours by the school board, but they closed the investigation prior to that timeframe. I then proceeded to submit a copy of my High School diploma by email on January 23, 2020, which was received. I also requested an OFFICIAL... Read More

I am currently going through the backgound check for a job I was offered. I have submitted education verification documents, notarized official transcripts, etc. to no avail. I've called twice, the people who answer the phones have the worst attitude and are extremely rude. Reading all the reviews, I am not hopeful at all that I will get hired. At this point, I am just going to start looking for a different job.

They are incompetent. Doesn't seem to do their job right. I'm going through a process to verify my employment status and for some reason they are keep asking for more personal documents and their system seem to have significant issues. All their customer supports whenever I call them say different things. One said it's all looking good then I got an email saying that it's not verified so I need to provide with more documents. I cannot believe how they do keep things in such sloppy way when it's such an important part of hiring process.
