Metlife Dental Review

Metlife Dental specializes in providing dental insurance for groups and is currently one of the top providers of dental insurance in the country. Included in their Dental PPO plan is full service coverage for retirees, a big plus when enhancing retirement benefits.

What's included with Metlife Dental?

Negotiated network dental fees are typically 15-45% below community-average charges

More than 400 covered procedures, includes co-pays for services such as implants, veneers, white fillings, IV sedation, general anesthesia and nitrous oxide

Expanded preventative and diagnostic benefits — providing co-pays for procedures such as brush biopsies and additional cleanings when appropriate

Defined fees for materials and procedures requiring multiple services (e.g., root canals, crowns and bridges) – minimizing fee confusion

Fine Print

Savings from enrolling in the MetLife PDP will depend on various factors, including how often participants visit the dentist and the cost for services rendered.

Plan provisions regarding eligibility and late entrants apply.

MetLife VisionAccess is a discount program and not an insured benefit. It is provided through Vision Service Plan (VSP), Rancho Cordova, CA. VSP is not affiliated with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company or its affiliates.

Deductible waived for diagnostic and preventive services for plans 1 and 2. Plan number 2 is not available in Mississippi and Texas.

Groups with no prior dental coverage, or without acceptable evidence of prior dental coverage can only choose plan 3.

Out-of-network benefits are payable for services rendered by a dentist who is not a participating provider. The Reasonable & Customary charge is based on whatever is lowest among (1) the dentist's actual charge, (2) the dentist's usual charge for the same or similar service or (3) the charge of similar dentists in the area for a similar service or services.

Summary

Metlife Dental provides decent savings on group plans and is especially useful for small businesses looking for dental coverage. However, this is subject to the availability of network and participating dentists in the area.

This dental ins plan is useless. I have needed several crowns for my teeth in the last several years. Guess what, Metlife covers ONE crown every 84 months. I am enrolled with Metlife only because it is what's available thru my place of employment. I am currently looking for dental insurance elsewhere.

They play a shell game with the "In-Network" Dentists, costs and coverage. For example, they "negotiate" rates for the dentists in networks and ONLY pay 50% of that negotiated cost. The patient is left paying the difference. They said they could not control how much the dentist actually charged. So since I called all the in network dentists in my area and couldn't find a Single One that actually charged the "Average negotiated rate" I asked Met Life to provide me the name of one. Since its the average cost of the procedure just find me a single dentist that charges the average. I am MORE than willing to pay the average. Guess what? They did not, nor could not provide me one.... Read More

Hope your state doesn’t tax dental procedures. Met Life Dental used to pay these taxes, but as of October 2018 has started refusing to do so. If you live in Minnesota, New Mexico, or Hawaii, you’ll be on the hook for taxes for your otherwise covered procedures.

How in the world did MetLife get almost 5 stars? They are horrible!!! Terrible customer service and the turnaround time on any response from them is never what they say! I think this consumer advocate.org needs to speak with real customers and find out what they are really like!

BS. MetLife is a scam. I paid for this insurance for years. They said directly they would cover a procedure then changed their mind after they got the bill. Your better off saving your money and paying cash when the time comes.

I was denied twice a crown for a dental implant (which was already approved and paid by another insurance), because the tooth was extracted before starting coverage. Well, since I just extracted the wisdow tooth next to it, do you suggest to put the implant to replace the wiswow tooth? In their opinion I should either pay out of pocket or staying without two teeth. Thank you, but we will not enroll with you anymore.

I am trying to find out why Metlife Dental is denying my dental claims even though they are medically necessary. Is this company a scam? They claim they cover periodontics treatments and even implants, yet they deny all claims submitted to them. I will be filing a complaint with BBB, and I will discuss a potential class action lawsuit with an attorney. It seems that most customers of Metlife have similar experience,

I have mailed my dental claims in for the past 2 years and realized I have NEVER been reimbursed for my sons appointments. I mailed the claims to them 5X and faxed them 2X over the past 2 years and they are still not even listed as a claim. I called and got Desiree and she asked me to fax them again to her and that she would get them in the system immediately. That was yesterday.... Since my previous follow up was non existent, I decided to follow up today so I called again just to confirm they did receive my fax. I was told I had to wait 72 hours to hear back. Frustrated, I asked why they just couldn't confirm receipt of my claims. They asked me to fax again and I refused and then... Read More

Their explanation of benefits listed a dental assessment at twice per year, but their legal contract lists it once every 6 months. I went in to a dentist who rendered services I didn't ask for, didn't render the services I had asked for, and generally did a terrible job and never gave me a cleaning, so I went to a different dentist for the cleaning 4 months later. Metlife refused to pay for anything or follow up at all with the previous dentist. They were almost impossible to contact on the phone, and once I did they people were exceptionally rude and sounded like they were robots, repeating over and over again "we only offer services every 6 months according to our legal contract". At one... Read More

I've got a 15 year old crown that needs replacing. First review says won't cover it as I have deep pockets that require jaw repair, even though it was over 15 years ago that deep pockets were resolved. Second reviewer didn't find the fracture. Third reviewer says only metal crown is covered. WTH, all my crowns and bridges are ceramic over metal. Appears agents get a bonus for claim denials. $660./year for terrible coverage. I will look elsewhere for dental insurance next year!
