Located in Santa Monica, California, Happy Head is an online provider of customized hair growth medicine and treatments. The company offers customizable formulae for both men and women which contain FDA-approved ingredients such as Finasteride, Minoxidil, Dutasteride, and Spironolactone. Some products require a prescription from one of Happy Head's dermatologists. Serums are applied directly to the scalp. Topical treatments are associated with fewer side effects than oral medications.

The Persistent Problem of Hair Loss

About 70% of men and about 55% of women will experience hair loss in their lifetimes, most commonly when they reach their senior years. But knowing you're not alone may be small consolation, particularly if your hair begins to thin earlier in life. A full head of hair has been long associated with virility and many people suffer a loss of confidence and self-esteem when hair loss sets it. That's why the medical community and drug manufacturers have been focused on developing effective solutions to hair loss. But to date, they haven't uncovered a lot of options.

There are only two medicines that have been scientifically demonstrated to stem hair loss and encourage hair regrowth. The first is Finasteride, also known by its trade name Propecia. Finasteride is FDA-approved as an oral treatment for hair loss, but not as a topical treatment. That isn't to say it doesn't work in topical form—it just hasn't been adequately studied or well-proven as effective to warrant FDA approval. The reverse is true of Minoxidil, the second FDA-approved treatment for hair loss. It has been approved for use topically, but not as an oral medication for hair loss treatment. Research is still underway and some studies on the oral use of Minoxidil are promising. Interestingly, oral minoxidil is sometimes prescribed in small doses to treat hypertension. But for now, FDA-approved treatments for hair loss are limited.

FAQs

Happy Head offers two topical treatments that are applied directly to the scalp. These are available in two customizable formulae: one for men and one for women. The basic men's formula contains both finasteride and minoxidil while the women's formula only contains minoxidil. The company also reports that these formulae are customizable based on a customer's hair loss issues and age. For example, for women past the age childbearing, the company might recommend a formula that contains finasteride, which is not indicated for women in their childbearing years.

Happy Head hair regrowth products come in serum form, which some customers may find less messy than the spray products sold by other companies. The company also touts the freshness of its topical products: they are manufactured monthly.

Although Happy Head claims that its products are prescription strength, no prescription is required for topical minoxidil. So there is no such thing as "prescription strength" for that medicine. However, when topical finasteride and minoxidil are combined in one serum, it becomes a prescription medication. Happy Head's combination finasteride and minoxidil treatments contain a somewhat higher concentration of minoxidil than is found in some over-the-counter treatments. Its men's formula is an 8% solution and its female formula for women is a 6% solution. It also contains the prescription 0.25% concentration of finasteride that many studies have found most effective. Happy Head serum also contains  0.1% Retinoic Acid, 1% Hydrocortisone, and aloe vera, which limits the risk of irritation when applied.

Happy Head Pricing

Happy Head hair loss formulae are available in 60 ml bottles for $79. That's enough to last a month when applied twice a day according to directions. A Happy Head regimen is fairly pricey compared to competitive products. Your consultation with a Happy Head dermatologist is free: you must be evaluated by a dermatologist to receive the medication. But the evaluation process is fairly simple. All you have to do is share a few photos of their hair loss areas for a doctor to review. Customers can also leave notes in a comment section of their evaluation forms to note any specific areas of concern. There are no lengthy contracts to sign and you can cancel the service at any time. Customers always have access to their care providers during treatment to address issues and adjust treatment regimens if necessary.

Hail Loss Treatments from Happy Head

Happy Head offers topical treatments in prescription and non-prescription formulae. The company also offers oral finasteride and a range of supplements the company says help with hair loss symptoms. (These claims have not been approved by the FDA.) So the company offers a lot of choices. Customers who want to give topical solutions a try before stepping up to oral medications will especially appreciate the company's product selection.
