Overall Rating: 3.9 / 5 (Very good)

Armed Forces Insurance offers dependable, personalized service to military personnel and their families.

The agency particularly shines with their wide range of optional endorsements that allow maximum customization of home insurance policies.

These include increased liability, liability for things like snowmobiles and personal watercraft, scheduled item coverage, and earthquake insurance to name a few.

However, in order to qualify for coverage you must be on active duty, retired, or honorably discharged; a spouse of such person; a Department of Defense employee; a commissioned officer of the NOAA or PHS; or a former spouse or child of an AFI member.

Financial Strength

Financial Strength - 4.5 / 5

AFI is underwritten by the Armed Forces Insurance Exchange, a organization that carries a A.M. Best rating of B++.

This indicates a "stable" outlook in terms of financial strength and long-term issuer credit rating.

Although the company has not been rated by any of the other top rating agencies, AFI has been issuing insurance policies to servicemembers and their families for over 130 years.

This is especially important when it comes to homeowners insurance considering the long term investment, and possibility of the company having to pay out massive claims over large areas in the case of something like a natural disaster.

Customer Experience

Customer Service - 4.5 / 5

Armed Forces Insurance has an A+ grade with the BBB and a NAIC complaint ratio that is lower than the national average. Customer feedback online is by and large positive with military families citing the organization's particular expertise and sensitivity to the challenges such families face.

This is likely due to the company's policy of assigning agents to continually assist clients over time. Customers of AFI develop relationships with their representatives, who in turn come to know the families and their situations and needs.

I have been an AFI member for home insurance since 2005. My father was a long-time member and my son is a relative newcomer who joined at my suggestion. All was well until 2021 when my home insurance premium was raised considerably. I accepted the rate. I did have to file a claim when my hot water heater broke and I suffered significant water damage. I made the mistake of filing a claim. At renewal, my insurance went from $157 a month to $221 per month. AFI determined the cost to rebuild my 1800sq ft house in a modest neighborhood rose to 290,000. A $290,000 house in El Paso, TX is considered upscale in an upscale neighborhood. So, while I didn't receive my no claim discount, my... Read More
