McAfee™ Identity Theft Protection Review
Best For Inexpensive Family Plans
McAfee offers three levels of identity theft protection service for individuals and families.
The company's Advanced plan, starting at $89.99 per year for individuals, includes identity theft monitoring and restoration, $1 million in identity theft coverage, antivirus software for an unlimited number of devices, a secure VPN, and personal data removal if your information is part of a security breach. The company's Premium plan, priced at $$49.99 for individuals, includes identity theft monitoring, a secure VPN, and antivirus software for an unlimited number of devices. McAfee's Plus plan, available for $39.99 per year, offers the same types of protection as the Premium plan but limits antivirus protection to five devices.
McAfee pricing is notable for a modest cost increase for stepping up to a family plan: just $10 per year no matter which plan you choose. That's a great value compared with other plans, which may go so far as to double your cost if you want to protect your family.
To our minds, the company's Advanced plan offers the best value. Restoring your identity once it has been stolen is hard work. The costs you may incur after your identity has been stolen can be quite high, from fraudulent purchases and late fees to home title theft. Only McAfee's Advanced plan offers active services for restoring your identity after a theft. It's also the only plan to offer financial protection to mitigate the costs you may incur as a result of fraud.
McAfee also offers a unique feature called a Protection Score. Customers can check the health of their online security at any time via the company's website. If your security is sub-par, the company provides simple instructions to improve it.
McAfee earns a B rating from the Better Business Bureau and 1.3 out of 5 stars on Trustpilot. Customer complaints largely center around billing issues related to automatic renewals and an inability to reach the company for support. We noticed that McAfee advertises that its experts are available to provide support 24/7, however, the company does not provide a customer support telephone number on its website. Those two facts seem a bit incompatible to us, but you can reach a security expert online when the need arises.
