AARP Coverage

Level of Coverage - 4 / 5

AARP offers eight of the current 10 plans to their members, which is essentially just excluding plans D and M. Medigap policy benefits are standardized by law in 47 states (Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Massachusetts have their own plans) so applicants can compare the "Plan A" of one insurer directly with the "Plan A" from another insurer.

Plan Types

  • Plan A - It includes hospital copayment costs up to a year after Medicare benefits are exhausted, the first three pints of blood, Part B coinsurance including preventive care services after deductible, and hospice care.
  • Plan B - Offers the same amount of coverage as Plan A, with the addition of a hospital deductible in each benefit period.
  • Plan C - One of the most popular plans, it adds on a skilled nursing facility daily copay, the Part B annual deductible, and emergency care outside of the U.S.
  • Plan F - Less expensive than other plans, F covers all the same benefits as C, with the addition of 100% of Part B's excess charges.
  • Plan G - Covers almost every Medicare supplemental insurance benefit, with the exception of Part B's annual deductible.
  • Plan K - Covers half of: Part B co-insurance, first 3 pints of blood, hospital deductible, skilled nursing facility, and hospice care. It also covers all the co-insurance for Part B preventive care services.
  • Plan L - Just like Plan K, this covers all of your Part A & B copays after a certain amount out-of-pocket, and 75% of every benefit that Plan K covers (instead of 50%).
  • Plan N - Covers hospital copayments, Part B co-insurance except $20 for office visits & $50 for emergency visits, first 3 pints of blood, hospital deductible, SNF, foreign care, all of Part B co-insurance for preventive care, and hospice care.

AARP Pricing

Services - 5 / 5

Pricing varies greatly, based on home address of the applicant and what age-rating method the insurer uses. We expect the rates for AARP to be in line with other insurers. United Healthcare, AARP's underwriter, community-rates its policies. This means that a new policy receives a 30% discount, and then every year for the next year, premiums rise 3%, until they reach the full cost.

AARP Customer Experience

Reputation and Customer Experience - 4.5 / 5

UnitedHealth Group has a strong rating from the BBB. As with any large company, we encourage applicants to research the individual UnitedHealthcare Insurance company of their home state to find the most detailed and recent reports. The information from AARP on Medigap plans is clear, concise, and helpful. The webpage offers a wealth of resources for the interested consumer, including live chat, Medicare worksheets, and downloadable guides.

O Rochelle A . commented her experience about drug coverage and her canceling her insurance. I have done the same with them and not paying monthly premium resulted canceling my insurance with them. Just to let everone know that if your insurance is canceled and the number of month you have no coverage will result a panelty, which you will pay the rest of your life even though you get coverage from another company. So lesson learned. only change insurance during open enrollment period. John M

I have (had) AARP/United RX coverage. The cost of the premium was no longer acceptable after I began using Good RX for my prescriptions, which was always at least 25% less expensive than the cost with the insurance, if not even 50% less in most cases. So I contacted AARP/United to dis-enroll. I was told I could NOT voluntarily dis-enroll unless I met one of their "criteria" for doing so. (i.e.: moved, deceased, etc.) After an extended conversation with an agent who kept reading the criteria over and over, I finally got her to admit that If I simply stopped paying, they would dis-enroll me. So that's what I did. Now, three months have passed and they have put me in COLLECTIONS... Read More

My husband and I have tried several times to apply to the supplemental insurance program and cannot get anyone there to help us follow through with our application. First they lost our application and then they could not print it to send it to us for signature. So we had to re apply. We received in the mail a letter stating us to sign the application right away, but forgot to put the application in it! When I call to get basic information they always need to speak to my husband. Why? Just waned to know if the application was mailed correctly!!! Can't get an straight answer from anyone! Very incompetent organization! Have no choice but to choose another company.
