Founded in 2020, Cerebral is a subscription-based mental health services company that operates online and via mobile app. The company treats anxiety, depression, insomnia, ADHD, and offers patients virtual counseling, prescription medication when deemed appropriate by a medical professional, and education on self-care techniques. Cerebral is located in Walnut, California.

Range of Treatment Options

Cerebral treats anxiety and depression, which are themselves considered mental health disorders, but may also present as symptoms of such conditions as insomnia, ADHD, PTSD, panic disorder, and bipolar disorder. The company provides online counseling upon request and prescription medication as determined by its mental health practitioners. If you have previously been prescribed a medication, you may also be able to utilize Cerebral's services to manage your medication and request refills. Services are available through one of three subscription plans: Therapy, Medication and Therapy, and Medication and Care Counseling.

Cerebral therapists follow an evidence-based approach to counseling and largely practice Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. CBT has been proven in scientific studies to be the most effective type of therapy you can undertake. Cerebral's Medication and Care Counseling plan delivers prescription medication directly to patients, only if prescribed. It also provides access to Care Counselors, who can educate you on self-care techniques like meditation and mindfulness—practices that can increase the efficacy of other kinds of treatment.

The company specifically states that its services are not appropriate for patients dealing with substance abuse, suicidal ideation, and schizophrenia. The company also does not treat pregnant or lactating women. That last caveat is a little puzzling to us, since pregnant women and nursing moms sometimes need therapy, too.

Cerebral's network of providers are licensed in all 50 states.

Licensures and Professional Credentials

All Cerebral therapists have completed a Master's- or higher-level degree program at an accredited institution. They're licensed to treat you in your state and have been trained in evidence-based therapeutic modalities. Some therapists have earned a Doctor of Psychology degree or Ph.D. in a mental health-related discipline. Others may be licensed as clinical social workers, professional counselors, or marriage and family therapists. Upon sign up, you can select your prescribing provider and therapist or care counselor; or, they will match you with a licensed provider to address your specific needs.

Cerebral may also connect you with a board-certified psychiatrist or nurse practitioner to prescribe and manage any medications you may take, if on a medication plan.

In addition, depending on the plan you select, Cerebral may match you with a Care Counselor who can help you with less technical mental health care practices like mindfulness, meditation, and self-care routines. These solutions can be beneficial on their own or in conjunction with therapy and/or medication. While all of Cerebral's Care Counselors are trained to deliver this type of education, they are not necessarily licensed therapists.

Ease of Use

Cerebral makes it pretty easy to find out about its services and plan options. The FAQ section provided on the company's website is very thorough. Critical information is well-organized and plainly spelled out. That's a differentiating feature—many telehealth providers don't clear that hurdle, so kudos to Cerebral.

After you join Cerebral, you can schedule your first appointment and get treatment within about seven days. Appointments are conducted via phone and video so they also offer the option to do "instant live visits" when and where available. The company gives members the option of accessing care through its mobile app. You can schedule appointments, track your progress using ongoing assessment tools, manage your account, and adjust notifications with the app. Practitioners will also send you reminders through the app. iOS users who have rated Cerebral's app at the Apple Store give the app 4.2 out of 5 stars. Android users give the app 2.9 out of 5 stars. Patients who review Cerebral on Trustpilot give it 4 out of 5 stars. Positive reviews cite the compassion of Cerebral's providers as the company's strength. Negative reviewers mention that providers are difficult to reach and that customer service tends to be unresponsive.

Price

Cerebral offers patients three different subscription plans, each with its own associated costs. Cerebral's Therapy plan includes weekly behavioral therapy sessions and costs $259 per month. On a per-therapy session basis, Cerebral's Therapy plan is on the low side of average for teletherapy and less expensive than most private-pay in-person therapy. Its Medication and Therapy plan includes weekly therapy sessions and medication prescription and management services and costs $325 per month. Medication is billed separately and is eligible for insurance coverage. Even if you pay out of pocket for medication, most of the medications Cerebral prescribes cost only $10 per month. According to Cerebral, most medications cost $10 per month for self-paying patients. We assume Cerebral practitioners prescribe generic medications to keep costs so low. Cerebral's least expensive plan is its Medication and Care Counseling plan, available for $85 per month. This option connects patients with providers who can evaluate them and prescribe medication if appropriate. It also includes ongoing medication management and access to the company's Care Counselors. Unlimited text messaging with Care Counselors is included in the cost of the Medication and Care plan.

Cerebral partners with some health insurance companies who offer the company's service as a covered benefit. If a member has an insurance plan that considers Cerebral "in-network", the member can sign up for any plan for only $29 per month; however, even if Cerebral is not considered "in-network", treatment may still be eligible for out-of-network reimbursement.

In the age of COVID-19, more and more insurers will cover telemedicine, so you may want to check to see if your insurance plan is among them. In addition, many health plans cover a certain number of therapy sessions with no co-pay. So at the outset of your treatment, you may not have any costs at all.

Can never get in touch with a live person as needed. Messages get response after 2 days, so let's hope you have no reactions to meds. I managed to send a message last week stating that I had a medication issue but my appointment for today gets cancelled. The medication is LAMICTAL and I have signs of CHF. But big deal right?

DO NOT USE THIS SERVICE!!! Not only are they extremely unorganized (I got moved from practitioner to practitioner) and was treated with zero personalized care. But even worse, after canceling the service, I continue to get emails with random things that they are continuing to charge me for! This company is an absolute money hungry JOKE!

if you can't pay they don't care anymore. Its one thing to cancel my subscription and appointments, but for a company who claims to be an affordable option for mental healthcare, its unethical to let you withdrawl from a medication THEY prescribed you by denying your refill request due to 1 missed payment. Complete GREED. If you need actual CARE AVOID CEREBRAL AT ALL COSTS!!!

Started out okay with a great provider to help me get off Celexa. After I was having issues with how I was feeling I went on the message board to ask If there was a sooner time to speak to her again( very quick call). never got a response then. She was booked until Sept 7th. mind you this was iddle of june. Finally got a message stating that she had an opening on 6/20. Went to schedule and there was NOT an availible slot. Really feeling anxious and weird and needed to see what my provider could do. Still nothing until 1:00 AM in the morning I get a message stating I had an 8:15 am appointment with her that same morning. Needless to say I had to work and couldnt make that call. Then I get... Customer service team is heartless. I got locked out of my account while I was creating it. It accepted payment and locked me out. When I reached out for assistance to cancel my account because I can't use the site because I got locked out upon creating it. I was not offered any assistance to re-access my account nor was I informed that answering their questionnaire would mean I receive only a portion of my money back. I don't understand how they could be offering "help" to people in need if this is how un-caring their customer service staff is. STAY FAR AWAY!!!

If I could give Cerebral 0 stars, I would. My entire experience with them has been atrocious. First, they will advertise that they have hundreds of therapists in network for you to choose from, and that they will match your preferences (such as gender, religious affiliation, age, etc). After providing my insurance information (which is a major insurance network, accepted in most medical settings) I was told that there were only TWO options to choose from, and neither of them met any of my preference requests. The first therapist I met with ended up cancelling my appointments with little to no notice several weeks in a row, and the second therapist would assign a specific day/time and if... Read More

You may have started with good intentions but as someone who has been privy to your hiring and contract requirements you have clearly made greed the priority over safe psychiatric treatment. The old saying if it’s too good to be true it probably is applies to you. You hire recent graduates fresh out of school who have yet truly become proficient then you lock them into quotas and time restraints for sessions that do not allow for true comprehensive assessments. A good psychiatric intake takes atleast one hour You have diminished quality psychiatric care to an assembly line. How else does a company amass such profits in Less than 2 yrs. I have heard first hand as an instructor and... Read More

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE I signed up for cerebral under the false impression it was $7 and that they accepted my insurance. After paying I was then told that they do not accept my insurance and I was charged $30. Their online customer service is not helpful at all and your emails are redirected to several other employees who tell you they will get back to you in the next few days. I never met with any of their healthcare professionals and tried to cancel an hour after signing up. They refused to give me a refund. I am very unhappy with how unprofessional they are.

Beware! I was matched with a therapist who I had a good session with and was later told they are not qualified to treat me. I was then given a male therapist, which I didn’t want. Cerebral told me they don’t have a female therapist qualified to treat me in NJ. I’m fighting for a refund. Stay away from this company!
