Pride Counseling Online Therapy Review

Pride Counseling is a subsidiary of the BetterHelp online counseling platform. It provides professional counseling services to members of the LGBTQ+ community. The company is headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, but its licensed therapists are located across the country.

Contact Methods

Once Pride Counseling has paired you with one of its licensed therapists, you'll be able to reach out to him or her at any time via a messaging system found in your online account or through the company's mobile app. You can also set up live chat, video or phone sessions if you prefer to communicate this way instead. When you sign up, you can choose to use your real name or a nickname of your choice if you prefer to keep your identity anonymous.

Cost

Pride Counseling doesn't charge per-session fees. Instead, you pay a subscription fee. It's $65 per week, billed monthly. In exchange, you can speak to your therapist as often as you'd like. Many licensed therapists charge $200 or more for in-person counseling sessions, so Pride Counseling could turn out to be a more affordable option if you use it enough.

But before you sign up, it's important to understand what exactly you're hoping to gain from the service. Pride Counseling states that it's up to the individual therapist to determine whether or not to issue recommendations for hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to those who are interested, but that many therapists do not do this due to the limitations of online counseling. If this is your primary reason for seeking therapy, consider choosing a traditional therapist you can visit in person.

Therapist Qualifications

All Pride Counseling therapists are licensed counselors with a Master's or Doctorate degree in their field. In order to join Pride Counseling, each must provide proof of his or her credentials, have at least three years of experience counseling adults, and pass a rigorous examination set by Pride Counseling to ensure that only the most qualified therapists are allowed to join. In addition, all Pride Counseling therapists have expertise in working with members of the LGBTQ+ community.

When you sign up for the site, you'll complete a questionnaire about yourself and your reasons for seeking counseling so that Pride Counseling can pair you with the best counselor. You're usually matched within 24 hours or less so you can begin speaking with your therapist. If you're unhappy with him or her for any reason, reach out to Pride Counseling and it will pair you with a new counselor.

Ease of Use

Signing up for Pride Counseling only takes a few minutes. You must complete the questionnaire so Pride Counseling can match you with an appropriate counselor. Then, you must confirm your email address before you can begin using the site. Once all this is complete, you can log into your online account where you can manage your personal details, view your therapist's schedule and credentials, and review your recent message history.

Pride Counseling also has a mobile app for Android and Apple devices so you can stay connected to your therapist wherever you go. The app enables you to do all the same things as the online account, including schedule appointments and message your therapist.

I reached out to pride for counseling. For my 12 yr old child . she had suicidal thoughts . the school recommended Pride . We did a intake at the end of Oct. and was told they would start counseling. i reached back out in Jan . cause I have heard nothing from them . The Lady at the office forwarded me to the head man . I left a voicemail and still have heard NOTHING from anyone in that office . I would NEVER recommend Pride to ANYONE in a crises . they are defiantly zero help !!!! Jacksonville NC

I have been working with my counselor for almost a year now and I absolutely love her. The problem is that they suddenly deactivated my account without ANY warning simply because I questioned an unexpected charge after I had already paid for an entire year of counseling. Then they refused to reopen my account and told me that if I want to continue counseling I'd have to make an entirely new one. Now their rates are much higher than my previously paid-for plan. What's worse is that they haven't matched me back with my current counselor yet - after promising they would - and instead matched me with someone random. If they don't connect me with her soon I'm getting my money back and never... Read More

I couldn't find a counselor who was even remotely close to my age, which is important to me given my previous experiences with therapy. Every time I requested a new counselor, days of my billed time went by. The counselor I finally saw clearly mixed me up with someone else, as she opened our session asking about a lawsuit concerning someone else. I'm glad she didn't give any specifics about the lawsuit or I'd be involved in a legal mess. At that point, I started to realize that she wasn't listening to me very well, and I requested a new counselor-- again. The last straw for me was when I specifically requested a female counselor and got paired with a male counselor. In the end, I got two... Read More

I’m disabled and unemployed and they want to charge enough for conseling that I wouldn’t be able to afford to eat. When I brought this up to them they just made the financial aid an extra 10% off which still is outside the sane limit for a 20 something disabled person in a bad place in life that can barely afford to live as is. Any money I make is half taken out of my checks so if I took on a part time job just to pay them, which would be near impossible with my issues, I’d have to work 2x as much to make the money to pay for this. If you tell them you still cant afford their therapy even with financial aid they will tell you to just deactivate your account. Profits over healing.
