Teen Counseling is a subsidiary of the BetterHelp online counseling platform. While BetterHelp caters to adults, Teen Counseling focuses on teenagers and teen issues, including bullying, self-esteem and coping skills. The company is headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, but its licensed therapists practice all over the country.

Contact Methods

Once you've signed up for the site and been paired with a licensed therapist, you can speak with him or her at any time via the messaging system in your online account. You can also schedule live chat, video or phone sessions if you prefer to communicate with your therapist this way. You're not limited to a single type of session. You can switch up your methods of communication as often as you'd like.

Cost

Teen Counseling users pay a $65 weekly membership fee, which is billed monthly. There are no per-session fees and you can speak to your therapist as often as you'd like while you're a member. You're also free to cancel the service at any time if you aren't happy with it or you feel you no longer need therapy.

Some traditional therapists can charge $200 or more per session and this gets expensive quickly. If you're on a budget, Teen Counseling is a nice alternative or supplement to traditional counseling, especially if you're using the service several times per month.

Therapist Qualifications

All Teen Counseling therapists are licensed therapists in their state of residence and have a Master's or Doctorate degree in their field. They also have at least three years of counseling experience. Teen Counseling requires all interested therapists to pass a rigorous exam before being allowed to offer their services through the platform to ensure that all users have the best possible experience.

Once you and your parent complete the questionnaire about yourself and why you're seeking counseling, Teen Counseling will pair you with an appropriate therapist based on your responses. If for any reason you're unhappy with your therapist, just reach out to Teen Counseling and they will set you up with a new one.

Ease of Use

Setting up your Teen Counseling account requires jumping through a few hoops. Parents must first create an account to verify that your parent is aware of and accepts your use of the platform. Once their account is created, they can send you an invite code where you can join. Alternatively, teens can sign up for TeenCounseling and send their parents an invite in order to gain consent. You can view and manage your account information, review your message history and therapist credentials and schedule new sessions through your online account or through the company's mobile apps.

In most cases, the information you share with your therapist won't be shared with your parent. Your parent also won't be able to view your message history with your therapist. However, there are a few instances where therapists are legally required to contact your parents. They may inform your parents if you express a desire to hurt yourself or someone else. They may also alert the authorities if you indicate that you are being neglected or abused or that you know of a child or elder who is being neglected or abused.

After my child's first session with this therapist from teencounseling she ran into my room crying and told me several disturbing incidents that I later confirmed were true with therapist. When my daughter told her a personal painful incident the therapist replied by saying other people experience the same or worse and relayed a personal story of her own and said it was just as bad. A therapist is supposed to work on bonding and building trust, especially in the first session with a teenager and that is done through empathy and not comparing the clients problems to other peoples. A therapist is NEVER supposed to bring in their own personal story. When I emailed this therapist asking her... Read More

My EAP coverage was supposed to provide three free sessions. I was asked to enter my credit card, which I assumed was to keep on file should I wish to continue after my benefit was used. Nope. I was immediately charged for a full month. I had to contact my insurance and they had to fight to get my money back. That done, I found a therapist for my daughter and set up an initial session. She had that session, and liked the therapist. However, when she went to log into the app for her second session, she received an error message. When I attempted to log in I received an error message as well--one that include a prompt to pay if I wanted to keep access. My benefits were supposed to include... Read More

Absolutely horrible customer service. I paid. Then we had issues with the account and could not get anyone to call me or help fix the issue. So, we canceled but can’t get anyone to refund my initial payment. So, I’m out $200+. Lesson learned.

I agree with what everyone is saying on here. I was crazy (and desperate) enough to return to this company twice. There just aren't any therapists out there. So after the first terrible experience I returned somehow thinking it would be different. It wasn't. The therapist seemed better this time so I foolishly signed up for the longer package. But she didn't work weekends and only certain hours. She would give these simplistic, trite responses to my daughter's questions and would often end their discussions abruptly on a Wednesday with "Talk to you next week". What's that about? What happened to unlimited messaging???!!! So my daughter would feel guilty about bothering her again. She... Read More

DO NOT SIGN UP WITH THEM! This is a horrible fraudulent company that charges your credit card immediately and will not refund your money when you cannot match with a satisfactory therapist ;and all they offer are therapists that have chat sessions (not even a video session)— how they think that texting with a therapist can diagnose and help your child is ridiculous!

This service/site is terrible. The counselors were mediocre, didn't probe into any indept issues with my son, and told us after 3 sessions that he was moving on to do something else. I was also so angry that they wouldn't provide a diagnosis code so we could get reimbursement for therapy. This is the worst service ever, particularly because they are taking advantage of a societal epidemic to make a buck..

This company is horrible. The counselor met my daughter and then said "I cannot help you" and said "you need to find somebody else." They never asked if she was safe, suicidal or even at risk. When we complained and asked for our money back, they were slow to respond and made the process complicated so that they did not have to refund us. Then, they charged us for the next month. We have reached out and emailed them and still get the same boiler plate response of "we can find someone for you." DO NOT USE THEM!

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! My daughter's therapist Yumi Cooper was irresponsible, unprofessional and neglectful. Also he She only wanted text therapy. Exchanged three texts with my daughter and two with me after I cancelled subscription. His answers to my daughters questions were absolutely inappropriate. Yet they charged me $1,900, $380 a month for 5 months and did not return my money yet. for nothing at all.

I wish I had read these reviews earlier before I paying to this Teencounseling.com. It is a terrible website. The first therapist my daughter got matched canceled 2 schedules in a row, and finally texted me that she was not familiar with the teenage therapy. Then I got the 2nd therapist for my daughter, she only gave 30 minutes session, and 2nd time she suddenly change our schedule 2 hours earlier and didn’t notify me, and my daughter didn’t like the way she talks and said she was pretty aggressive. So I had to change another therapist. The 3rd therapist was 10 minutes late for the scheduled session and talked to my daughter like 20 minutes. She told me the platform just adjusted the... Hello The therapist is good. However the website & contact service is poor at best. I have sent multiple messages for a billing correction date with no regard. If it was for the therapist, I’d cancel.
