Home security not only protects your family and your valuables, but it provides something even more precious: peace of mind. With a home security system, you can rest assured that in 80% of the cases, the mere presence of an alarm system is enough to protect your home from a break-in. If you are considering Slomin’s vs. ADT, both home security companies have been in business for decades and offer top of the line security. The two are hands-on companies that provide professional installation, 24/7 monitoring, and home automation. So, what are the differences, and which one is best for you?

ADT is a household name and one of the largest home security companies in the world. The equipment is reliable, and the monitoring services received good reviews from customers. Plus, you can always expand with home automation options. ADT provides any type of security package you want, which is great if you’re a renter, a first-time homeowner or enjoy the latest automation technology. Each plan has a 36-month contract, which is standard in the home security industry.

Also offering home security solutions for more than 90 years, Slomin’s is a family-owned and operated company that offers a set of advanced home security system equipment. With the basic plan, you get the control panel with keypad, a battery backup, one motion detector, three door/window sensors, one indoor siren and multiple window decals, plus one yard sign. Additional equipment is available for an extra cost. While their equipment offerings are nearly identical to ADT’s, Slomin’s requires a 5-year contract, which is not ideal for renters or people who suffer from commitment phobia. Besides, service is not available nationwide, and there is a cancellation fee where Slomin’s can’t service.

When considering ADT vs. Slomin’s, it’s essential to conduct your research and consider your home security needs and budget. Get quotes from each company and examine the features and equipment that will fit your lifestyle. We’ve compared Slomin’s vs. ADT based on the following elements: equipment, monitoring, reputation, contract & price, and technology integration. Home security systems have been proven to lessen or decrease the chance of intruders and thieves from getting into our homes. A study conducted by researchers at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte found that 80% of burglars would not break into a house if they encountered an alarm or home security system. Renters and homeowners must consider these statistics when it comes to choosing the best home security system to protect their families and possessions.

Both of these security companies offer top of the line equipment and professional installation but assessing Slomin’s vs. ADT revealed that ADT is a better choice for homeowners and renters who are looking for exceptional home security at a moderate cost. We like that ADT provides any type of security package, which is not only good for first- time homeowners, but also for renters or people who are crazy about the latest smart home technology. Plus, ADT has medical backup features like pendants and other helpful tools for those who may not be able to get to the phone in case of an emergency.

Regarding equipment, both ADT and Slomin’s have a landline and cellular options available, 24/7 monitoring, and full home automation. Both systems offer environmental monitoring (fire, carbon monoxide, temperature, and water detectors) and include motion detectors, touch-screen control panel, backup battery, door and window sensors, camera surveillance, and keychain remote.

For those who want DIY monitoring, ADT Canopy is the company’s newest offering along with Samsung SmartThings. Reviewers agree it’s great for someone who wants an alternative to other DIY home security providers. Another advantage of ADT is that their coverage extends across the United States, while Slomin’s may not be able to provide coverage for customers who move outside their service area. Slomin’s is expanding their coverage but remain a mostly regional company that services the areas of East Coast, Georgia, Florida, and the Los Angeles area.

Sensor & Device Comparison

How do home security systems work? When one of the sensors installed is triggered, the security company will call the homeowner and verify the emergency. The security company will then alert the police, fire department or paramedics to come to your property for the assistance. However, if you do not respond to the call, the company will call the police department and send out a police unit to check out the situation.

The type of sensor that a company uses, and the number of placement options, cannot only make a particular company better suited to your needs but also make you and your family safer. When considering Slomin’s vs. ADT, bear in mind the intrusion protection of each system. Both companies include door & window sensors, glass break protection, and motion sensors. Nevertheless, ADT incorporates a wide variety of other sensors and devices for garage and recessed doors, as well as crash and smash protection.

You can also include surveillance cameras for ultimate protection. Do you want to know what’s going on in your home even when you’re not there? One of the best ways to do this is by installing a security camera. Surveillance cameras are not just a powerful deterrent when they are visible but can provide evidence of the burglars to help police identify the criminals. Slomin’s and ADT provide indoor and outdoor cameras, doorbell cameras, and tilt & pan cameras. On top of that—and at an additional cost—you can use the ADT Pulse app and mySlomin’s appt to turn off the lights, lock the doors, and change the temperature.

Both companies also feature live surveillance and medical alerts, which can be particularly helpful for consumers who have some disability or ailment, as well as for those caring for or who are part of the elderly community. However, ADT goes the extra mile with the ADT One-Button Panic Pendant, a wireless personal panic transmitter.

How do their monitoring services compare?

By sounding a siren, any alarm system can notify you of any trouble afoot in your home, whether it’s a break-in attempt, fire or medical emergency, but only a connection to a central monitoring station will provide the necessary assistance if you’re not home. A home security company’s monitoring system and response speed are two of the top drivers of customer satisfaction.

The monitoring center plays a crucial role when it comes to defending your home. ADT’s national monitoring system is capable of handling more than 6,000 customer service calls each day. Also, in addition to the main national monitoring center located in Aurora, Colorado, ADT has nine other monitoring centers located throughout the United States and Canada. Slomin’s, on the other hand, has only one central monitoring station to protect you from theft and other emergencies.

Having multiple monitoring centers spread out across the country offers plenty of advantages as it ensures that you receive the most reliable service possible and the fastest response time. As a homeowner, we recommend that you choose a company with a monitoring center near you.

Pricing & Cost Comparison

Learning how much a home security system costs is very important. Not only that, but it’s also important to consider the cost of someone breaking into your home. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, victims lose an average of $2,119 in stolen items per burglary in the United States.

Both Slomin’s and ADT offer monitored home security system, which is going to cost you more than an unmonitored system. On average, a monitored security system (via phone line) will cost you from $20 to $40 a month. Systems that are monitored through GPS (geolocation) or wireless will cost you more (from $40-$60) a month. When considering ADT vs. Slomin’s bear in mind that both companies require long-term contracts, ADT is three years, while Slomin’s is five. However, Slomin’s contracts do not necessarily consider the possibility of a move into an area that isn’t covered, and you could end up paying a hefty cancellation fee is the service is terminated for any reason.

ADT’s 3-year contract also includes lifetime warranties on all the products the company offers, while Slomin’s only provides a 1-year limited warranty. Slomin’s monthly monitoring fee starts at $29.95 and ADT’s starts at $36.99. Also, ADT has a $99 installation fee while Slomin’s offers free professional installation. This means that in both cases an experienced alarm representative and an installer will walk through your home with you to customize the system to your family’s needs. At this point, you will be able to purchase additional protection, such as smoke detectors or cameras.

Simply put, the cost of having a home security system will vary based on the company you choose, the type of equipment, the size of your home, and the level of monitoring. Keep in mind that most companies charge additional fees beyond the basic package price. These typical fees are one-time activation fee, equipment fees, monitoring fees and, installation fees. We recommend that you contact Slomin’s or ADT directly and ask questions to make sure that they can customize your home security system to fit your needs.

What technology integrations are available?

The list of smart devices continues to grow and the “internet of things” is changing the way we live and work. Home security systems are increasingly able to integrate with our computers and mobile devices to provide flexibility and control both in the home and out. Not all home security companies offer smart technology, but this isn’t the case. Both Slomin’s and ADT provide customers with a number of home automation tools, where customers can access locks, thermostats, lighting and live and recorded video monitoring, all from the respective smartphone apps (ADT Pulse and mySlomin’s.)

However, ADT wins the techno battle for its video doorbell camera and smart switches & plugs. Also, you can easily add ADT Pulse to Alexa to arm or disarm your system, control your smart door locks and lights, and open or close your garage door. Plus, ADT uses Z-wave wireless technology to connect your smart devices and control them using the integrated ADT Pulse app.

In addition to protecting against home invasion, many of today’s home security systems can also monitor environmental threats such as fire, flooding/water leaks, carbon monoxide, and freezing pipes. A flood sensor linked to your home will alert you if there is a water leakage or increased moisture. Also, a smoke detection system will quickly alert you if there’s some somewhere in the house. Although you may already have smoke detectors at home, a “smart” home detector will allow you to keep track of these monitors on the same platform as your anti-theft systems.

How do their reputations compare?

Slomin’s was originally founded in 1923 as a general store and is headquartered in Hicksville, NY. Over the years, the company evolved into an oil delivery and heating and air conditioning company. In the early 80’s they added home security to their list of services. Currently, they only provide services in Virginia, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Washington D.C., Maryland, West Virginia, Georgia, North and South Carolina. The company’s commitment to customers is backed by the “Slomin’s Shield,” requiring employees to go through background checks, drugs tests, and a rigorous training program. Also, their customer support center is available 24/7/365.

ADT, on the other hand, has a well-established reputation as one of the most trusted names in the industry; the company’s been around since 1874. The company is known for having competitive contract terms, numerous customer support resources, and excellent equipment. Not only that, the company offers a lifetime warranty on all their equipment.

As long-timers in the home security industry, both Slomin’s and ADT have excellent reputations. Although a company’s age is not necessarily an indicator of financial strength or reliability, a household name can offer some sense of stability. Regarding customer reviews, ADT has been deemed as good, but expensive. Be sure to examine your needs before you decide how much equipment you need. On the other hand, Slomin’s 5-year contract is not ideal for renters or people who suffer from commitment phobias and the fact that the company has only one central monitoring center doesn’t help either.

Both companies have an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, and Slomin’s has a 7.7 out of 10 with TrustPilot, while ADT has a 2.2 out of 10. Bear in mind that the amount of negative reviews is not necessarily a cause for concern. A company as huge as ADT is bound to have customer complaints. The important thing is that they have shown their commitment to resolving the issues when they arise.

ADT Smart Home Security review
ADT is a extortionist. sent me to collections one week after I paid in full and then canceled my account. ADT extorted $25.13 when I called them up they said there was nothing they could do once it went to collections they told me to talk to the collection agency, they then told me I have to talk to ADT. I think ADT owns that collections agency cuz it has the worst rating on it internet. This is all because they bill you one month after you cancel your account for some reason they have the right to bill you 30 days after you cancel your account. that's like making an extra car payment once you've paid it off it's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. I told him you might as well bill people for six months after they cancel, that way you can make more money. this company is a joke. whatever you do don't get anything from them. Please tell 10 people this story and have them tell 10 more people maybe we can put these extortionist out of business

We got new windows and the window people ripped out our ADT devices. We consulted ADT about getting new equipment and they quoted us something like $2,000 for the whole house (granted this is a large house). Then we ended up going with another security monitoring company. I had to call ADT to cancel the service and they literally kept me on the phone for 15 minutes tying to get me to stay. Needless to say it was a very annoying experience.
