Founded in 1975, TD Ameritrade is a Nebraska-based investment advisory and brokerage firm. The company offers online investment tools and several retail brokerage products, allowing clients the ability to invest in mutual funds, index funds, ETFs, and preferred stock, among others.

TD Ameritrade Fund Characteristics

Fund Characteristics - 4.4 / 5

TD Ameritrade offers several investment products – from index mutual and exchange traded funds (ETFs), stocks and options, to more than 300 commission-free ETFs and mutual funds that are top rated by Morningstar. Like others in their league, the firm's index funds follow some of the major markets. The firm's site offers an ETF screener that allows investors to search by fund type or Morningstar rating – similar to others we’ve reviewed such as Fidelity and Charles Schwab. What’s particularly nice about this feature is that investors can specifically search just ETF index funds with a green tag symbol next to the name of each fund to signal it is commission-free. This feature also gives clients easy access to the fund’s prospectus. Similarly, the company offers a mutual fund screener that offers the same features. Another aspect we liked about TD’s fund search is investors have an option to select and search socially responsible funds.

TD Ameritrade Fees

Fees - 4.4 / 5

TD Ameritrade offers hundreds of commission free ETFs and mutual funds, but the standard commission fee per online equity trade is $6.95, which is slightly higher than some of the other firms we've reviewed. It should be noted that the commission-free ETF short-term trading fee is $13.90 while the company’s short-term redemption fee on mutual funds is $49.99. This is not an usual fee, as several other firms charge a similar short-term trading fee. Other fees associated with investing may apply and expense ratios may vary. As such, we always encourage investors to perform their own thorough research before choosing an investment product.

TD Ameritrade Reputation, Service, and Communication

Reputation, Service, and Communication - 4.4 / 5

TD Ameritrade enjoys excellent customer service ratings and a reputation as industry leader. The company currently holds an A2 grade from Moody’s and also has a good reputation for its customer service, having received an A+ from the Better Business Bureau. Clients can enjoy the ease of around-the-clock online or phone customer assistance, but also the ability to visit one of its hundreds of branches nationwide. TD Ameritrade is also Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC) insured. We continue to recommend that customers do their own research before choosing an investment product.
