SkyMed specializes in providing emergency travel services. The company does not own or maintain its own planes but currently partners with air carriers to provide its services. In the unfortunate event that a member suffers from an injury or critical incident while travelling across its 32 covered countries, the company repatriates the member to their home hospital of choice.

Air Fleet

SkyMed does not own or maintain its own aircraft but partners with air carriers in its area of coverage.

Approximately 75% of aircraft used in air transports are jets or fixed wing aircrafts. Type of aircraft used are subject to the type or landing strip or airport available. The rest of the flights are on regularly scheduled carriers. Type of aircraft service used also depends on the member’s medical condition.

SkyMed Summary

SkyMed promises to send members not just to the nearest qualified medical facility but to a hospital near their home. This is in contrast to most medical evacuation offers that merely send you to the nearest hospital. Other highlights from the company include a long list of standard and optional features designed for travelers. A good buy for those searching for medical evacuation coverage but still a few notches down compare to the better ranked companies in this review.

Absolutely the worst customer service of any medical organization that I have experienced. The advertising leads you to believe that SkyMed has their own planes on which they book you and transport you in the event of emergency. They do NOT have their own planes. All they do is book you on a commercial flight. And once they have booked you, their service ends. If the flight is cancelled or delayed, SkyMed does NOTHING to help you get to your home or hospital. When you call and ask for assistance, SkyMed says there is nothing they can do about the commercial airlines operations. In our case, we were booked in a first class seat on a flight that was cancelled and not rescheduled to leave for... Read More

I recently broke my arm while in Mexico. While at the Red Cross, I contacted SkyMed and they arranged for a flight home for me in first class. I needed a visitation to sign a “fit to travel“ form. They were prompt in answering and making arrangements And they kept in touch with me throughout my ordeal. They paid for the trip back to Mexico nearly a month later. They delivered me to my US residence As promised – – and not just the nearest facility to my accident. I did not require actual medical evacuation but they paid for a round-trip ticket to you take me home and get me back. I was able to choose my own carrier and schedule. They offered to pay for ground transportation from the... Read More

Skymed to me is a giant ripoff! When you’re having s heart attack they require that the first thing on your mind is calling them to arrange an air evacuation. Sorry that isn’t even on your mind. The hospital makes those arrangements while trying to keep you alive. When you realize you’ve been ripped off and ask for a refund, that is absolutely out of the question. They charge far more for their lack of service than many other sources that actually do pay. Be wiser than me and save your money with these folks.
