Founded in 2010, MeMD is a telehealth service company that offers physical and mental health treatment for over 80 non-emergency illnesses and injuries. The company is accredited by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) for its practitioner credentialing and meets over 60 licensing, certification, and quality standards. MeMD is headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona.

Breadth of Services

MeMD can evaluate and treat over 80 non-emergency physical and mental health conditions, from asthma to decreased sex drive. The list of "covered" concerns the company publishes is somewhat longer than other telehealth providers' lists, but overlaps are common in the telehealth space. We were impressed, however, that the company specifically mentioned birth control as something its practitioners can help patients with. Some providers who mention women's health issues don't disclose whether birth control is among the services they offer.

On the mental healthcare side of services, MeMD provides treatment by both licensed therapists and psychiatrists who can evaluate psychological problems that may require treatment with prescription medicines. MeMD specifically states that therapy is offered for children aged 10 through 17. COVID-19 has precipitated an uptick in mental health problems among every age group, but children are particularly vulnerable right now. Having easy access to mental healthcare via the electronic media kids are already comfortable with is an important step in managing our current mental health crisis.

MeMD providers can prescribe medication when appropriate. Prescriptions are sent to the pharmacy of your choice for fulfillment. Providers can also order lab tests if necessary. MeMD doesn't treat chronic illnesses like high blood pressure or diabetes, however, if you have an up-to-date prescription for a medication you take routinely, you can use the service to have your prescription refilled.  Certain medications cannot be prescribed online by telehealth providers like MeMD, so if you take stimulants for ADD or another controlled substance for pain, you'll need to ask a local doctor for refills.

Professional Credentials and Licensures

The MeMD medical team is comprised of board-certified physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and masters-level therapists. The company states that its medical providers have an average of 16 years of experience and its mental health practitioners have an average of 18. In addition, MeMD is accredited by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) for its practitioner credentialing and meets over 60 licensing, certification, and quality standards.

MeMD doesn't provide MD, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, or therapist profiles on its site, a feature we think helps patients feel confident and secure in their choice of a healthcare provider. However, if you are using the service through an employer-based health plan, you can access MeMD's Primary Care service and can select your own MD. Patients who are not affiliated with one of MeMD's partner organizations may only use the company's urgent services. Urgent care patients do not select their providers.

Price

You'll find a complete explanation of MeMD's fee structure in the company's FAQ section. The cost of a MeMD urgent care visit, men’s health visit, or women’s health visit for an individual is $67. That's on the low side of average for a telehealth visit. Adult and teen therapy sessions cost $85 for a 50-minute session and $65 for a 25-minute session. That's in line with most other telehealth providers, too. It's also on par with the average cost nationally of in-person therapy with a masters-level counselor. But if you live in a large city, in-person counseling tends to be much more expensive than average. So depending on your zip code, MeMD could represent a significant opportunity to save, particularly if you wish to see your counselor weekly. A MeMD psychiatry visit costs $229 for a 45-minute session and $99 for a 15-minute follow-up session. That's on the low end of prices we've seen.

MeMD accepts payment from FSA, HSA, and HRA accounts, as well as personal debit and credit cards. While not all health plans pay for telehealth services, your visits may be covered by insurance. That's a good thing to find out before you schedule an appointment with MeMD. MeMD also partners with some employers to add MeMD services to the benefits covered by their health plans. So you may also want to check with your employer to see if your company is among MeMD's partners.

Customer Experience

Over the past decade, MeMD has grown into an organization that serves about 5 million members nationwide. The company receives a 4.3 out of 5-star rating on Trustpilot. Many Trustpilot reviewers praised the speed at which they were able to speak to a medical provider and the "bedside" manner of MeMD's staff. Users frequently reported being in contact with a doctor within minutes of requesting a medical consultation. Compare that to the wait times you've experienced when you try to see a traditional in-person doctor and one of the key selling points of telehealth becomes abundantly clear. MeMD mental health appointments are generally available within 24 hours of a request.

You can access MeMD services via computer or telephone. You can also download the MeMD app to register with the company, complete your health profile, make appointments, and pay for your treatment. The app provides a record of your appointments, including documents you may need to download.

The MeMD website contains a searchable blog containing more than 500 articles on a wide range of topics. Live chat is also available on the site and the company serves up real people to talk to, not chatbots.

Waste of time. Y'know, we use these services because we want to avoid the trip to the doctor, are perhaps even unable to make a trip to the doctor - due to disability, mobility issues, whatever - and then they refuse to prescribe antibiotics anyway? So you call them because you're ill and feel you need antibiotics, and are probably quite qualified to make that decision, but they're saying, well, if you're that ill, you should really see a doctor... for chest xrays and blood work, etc. Some of these teledoc services charge virtually the same - like $475 for a ten minute phone conversation - and they won't even write a $10 script for you? that might, ultimately, save you a trip to the... I requested an appointment because I had COVID and was having trouble breathing (was interested in an inhaler). The website says that it is a great resource for COVID symptoms and trouble breathing is one of the most common and severe symptoms. They charged me $70 for a 3 minute phone call in which the provider said, “I can’t do anything for you over the phone.” I tried to dispute the charge and the supervisor called me and wouldn’t refund me. I asked if they have the option to deny my visit request if they know they can’t do anything for me and she said that the request goes through two teams of people and it’s all at their discretion, which means they all pushed my appointment through to...
