Although Trupanion offers pet insurance coverage for all North America, the company was originally founded in Vancouver in 1998 as Vet Insurance Corp before opening its doors as Trupanion in the US in 2000. Trupanion continues to be one of the largest, most trusted providers in its home country of Canada. Trupanion provides coverage for over 750,000+ cats and dogs in one simple, easy to understand plan that pays 90% of actual costs with no payout limit. Trupanion's policies include a wide range of coverage options making the company an excellent choice for pet insurance. You can enroll your pet from birth up to 14 years of age. They are the only company that can pay your veterinarian directly at time of checkout to eliminate the reimbursement model.  Trupanion prides itself on paying out more on the dollar than any other pet insurer on the market. Summary

Trupanion has comprehensive coverage, no payout limits and 24/7/365 (including holidays) customer support all make it an excellent choice for financially protecting pets and pet owners against any sudden illness or accident. Like many of the top pet insurance services, it does not cover pre-existing conditions. The company's 90% reimbursement rate and no payout limit is just about the best deal you are going to find. Trupanion is the only pet insurance company who can pay your veterinarian directly, within seconds, at time of checkout. If your veterinarian does not offer Vet Direct Pay, Trupanion processes the majority of their claims within 2 days, many within minutes. There seems little going against Trupanion in terms of the overall quality of the services they provide. If you are looking for pet insurance in Canada, Trupanion is a must-look-at option.

I've had my yellow lab insured with Trupanion since she was a puppy. Back then the company was called Vetinsurance. They've always been good at processing our claims and thankfully it's only been small issues these past 8 years. However I paid ~$32 a month in the beginning and this has steadily risen to $127 a month. I'd likely be better off putting that money aside each month just in case, but that's a risk I'm hesitant to take.

Amazing customer service. My girl was diagnosed with steroid Responsive Meningitis. Between diagnosis and treatment the vet bills were well over $10 000. It took the stress off me when I paid a fraction of that. She was able to get the best healthcare thanks to Trupanion. I have dealt with them many times before and after. Every experience is a positive one. There staff is so friendly and helpful. I HIGHLY recommend them.

We have been enrolled with Trupanion for only three months. If I were writing this review a month ago, I would have given them a great review. Our puppy had a bladder infection so I filed a claim, it was APPROVED and I was happy with our decision to purchase pet insurance. We had not reached our deductible amount, so I knew that we would not get any money back, but the quick turnaround of our claim was impressive. When there was still evidence of infection after the first round of antibiotics, our vet placed our puppy on a second round of antibiotics. I submitted the claim, knowing that this one brought us to closer to our deductible. I still was not expecting any money back, but knew if... Read More

We decided to get our dog insured after struggling to afford medications and tests for our cat. I'd had another cat previously that I also struggled to afford veterinary care for, so at the suggestion of my boyfriend, we decided to go the insurance route. We got our dog signed up through their trial of insurance that we got at our veterinarian. Shortly after she broke a tooth, which they covered. A few months later she ate a naproxen tablet, which is toxic! I think the cat was trying to kill her because those pills were safely on the table when we left the house! Well they covered that vet stay too. Then she started vomiting and was later diagnosed with IBD. Not only have they covered that... Read More

I signed up for Trupanion on 10/3/16 because it was recommended by my vet. I then found out about Healthy Paws 6 days later, got a quote that was 1/2 the price for equal insurance coverage so I signed up with them. I called Trupanion on 10/9/16 to cancel and was told the cancellation was processed. As far as I knew I was done. On 10/16 they sent an email that went to my spam folder. I didn't see it until 11/27/16 when I saw another charge on my credit card and did a search in my inbox. They are now refusing to refund me back to my original date of cancellation due to a loophole that I didn't respond to the original email that they sent 6 days after I cancelled to confirm the... Back in June of this year, our Golden was discovered to have Melanoma in his mouth. We discovered it very quickly as we brush his teeth every day and it literally was not there one day and there the next. We rushed him into our vet who removed as much as she could but the results came back that it was cancer. We took him to the VEC in Toronto where CTScans/ultrasounds/x-rays were all done to see if it had spread. As per all those tests it had not. Surgery was performed immediately and a small piece of his upper jaw bone was removed along with 2 or 3 teeth and some skin from his teeth. Repeated trips to the VEC were done for checkups and the new Melanoma vaccine. To date the bill for... Read More

I have a cat that has an auto immune skin issue that requires 30. a tube gel to be placed on the lesions. Not covered even though it is a chronic condition. I had a cat that had to have three extractions last week. My vet told me not to bother submitting a bill. I have a 500. deductible and the blood work was 300, and the dental was 965. Of that they will only pay for the actual extraction of one tooth. They do not pay for anesthesia, monitoring during surgery, blood work of any kind, pain killers or fluids. I have five cats insured with them. It costs me over 150. a month when I am on a fixed income. I am looking around for a better deal. I will say that the contact I have had with the... Read More

I had a lot of claims with Trupanion over the lifetime of my Bulldog. For the most part I was very satisfied with the service, I was not however subscribing to the 20-30% annual increase in premiums they tacked on each year with the blanket response that the industry was making such headways in medicine, cost of care etc. They were quick to pay out though it was just the annual increases that were really high.

I had heard many good things about Trupanion. When we got our dog, we registered him with Trupanion, thinking we could give him the best care possible should anything ever happen. When something DID happen, Trupanion came up with every...single...possible excuse in the book NOT to cover MOST of our expenses. On over $2,000, we're lucky if we got $170 back. NOT COOL! They basically cover nothing...contrary to what their website says.
