Although Trupanion offers pet insurance coverage for all North America, the company was originally founded in Vancouver in 1998 as Vet Insurance Corp before opening its doors as Trupanion in the US in 2000. Trupanion continues to be one of the largest, most trusted providers in its home country of Canada. Trupanion provides coverage for over 750,000+ cats and dogs in one simple, easy to understand plan that pays 90% of actual costs with no payout limit. This includes prescribed medications, surgeries, medically-necessary hospitalizations, diagnostic tests, and other treatments.

Trupanion's policies include a wide range of coverage options making the company an excellent choice for pet insurance. You can enroll your pet from birth up to 14 years of age. They are the only company that can pay your veterinarian directly at time of checkout to eliminate the reimbursement model.  Trupanion prides itself on paying out more on the dollar than any other pet insurer on the market. Summary

Trupanion has comprehensive coverage, no payout limits and 24/7/365 (including holidays) customer support all make it an excellent choice for financially protecting pets and pet owners against any sudden illness or accident. Like many of the top pet insurance services, it does not cover pre-existing conditions. The company's 90% reimbursement rate and no payout limit is just about the best deal you are going to find. Trupanion is the only pet insurance company who can pay your veterinarian directly, within seconds, at time of checkout. If your veterinarian does not offer Vet Direct Pay, Trupanion processes the majority of their claims within 2 days, many within minutes. There seems little going against Trupanion in terms of the overall quality of the services they provide. If you are looking for pet insurance in Canada, Trupanion is a must-look-at option.

What a terrible company that just feels like a scam. I took my puppy in for an exam and when we got home I had about 4 emails from this company. It makes it look like you have a plan and you're all set up. I wonder how many people get sucked into their service cause they don't know what's going on. It turns out it's just their way of getting a 30-day trial. As you near the end of their trial they'll call you daily bugging you to sign up. And if you actually press one on the phone to connect to someone so you can ask them to stop calling you, the call just disconnects. Don't even get me started on their insane rates. Do you self a favour and just save that money for a rainy day. You'll be... Read More

They have awful customer service. To do a basic update with documents to back it up due to an admin error the rep insisted on a change of ownership when it was during the trial period and refuse to let me speak to the manager. Not helpful at all... During my Trial period!

Our 12 week old puppy was insured immediately upon picking her up at 9 weeks of age. Due to the "grace periods" we had coverage for "accidents" after 5 days from the date of payment, and "illnesses" would be covered after a month (30 days). One night after letting our dog out for a pee, she started to throw up violently. She continued to heave heavily almost to the point of being unable to breathe. Additionally she threw up blood multiple times. My wife and I rushed her to the emergency clinic at 2am, and treated her for what the vet suspected was a "foreign object" possibly lodged into her tummy or throat. The total cost of the overnight stay was $1500.00. Thankfully our puppy was ok,... Read More

30 day free trial email was never received, nor was I made aware of needing to receive one. We were under the impression we had the 30 day trial. Until we tried to use it and every excuse was made and too bad for you was told to us. If we paid for the month then we may get coverage but not until then. It felt like a scam to us, no one usually uses it during that time so I dont know if many people have experienced this. Very disappointing and we will not become customer after being treated so poorly so early on

Horrible experience. STAY AWAY. Better to go with Pet Plan as your pet insurance provider.

After receiving a free trial from my vet, I decided to stick with Trupanion. This is my first time using pet insurance after nearly 20 years of pet ownership without it. I would NOT recommend, certainly not with this company. After the first year, my rate was increased by a whopping 25%! Another friend had an increase of 35%. My dog is less than a 2 years old. I would hate to see what my monthly rate would be in another 10 years. When questioned they explained they follow rate adjustments as outlined by “state” regulations (Canadian company???). It became clear you are covering costs for treatments (e.g. cancer) you may not consider for your pet because others opt to do so. My... Read More

My Labrador lived to almost 15. We had been with trupanion for 12 years. So many times during the first ten years I wondered whether it was worth the monthly premium, given my girl was very healthy. My vet encouraged me to stick with it, saying you'll Need it in her old age. So I did. But when she started to have arthritis Trupanion tried to only pay a percentage of her pain meds, because she had surgery on one of her legs when she was a pup. Pre-existing they claimed. But the same med helped new areas as well as previous, so they tried to only pay a portion. My vet went to bat for me saying their option was beyond ridiculous and we got them to concede but not without a lot it... Read More

My wife and I insured our Cockapoo puppy with Trupanion when he was about 8 weeks old. We had visited the vet at the time, and the vet informed us that he has ear infection, which to our understanding is a common problem with puppies. We were given ear drops and at that time we asked about pet insurance and one of the options that was presented to us was Trupanion. Without doing much research I signed up to have the peace of mind for future problems that may occur. Fast forward to two year after, most of our claims have been denied. We had another ear infection after a year, which was denied because somehow it was related to the very first infection that our puppy had. Our dog started... Read More

Sadly I just found that a surgery done in Japan (is not available in USA, Canada) is not covered. It's about mitral valve surgery. They are compassionate and kind and sorry but not helpful. Found out in the Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/MightyHeartsMVDCommunity/) that Embrace and Nationalwide will cover this. Really disappointed after 10 years with them.

I wouldn't sign up with Trupanion, they were great for 4 years, until I came up on hard times and missed a couple of payments called them to see if I could split the payment in half so it would go on my credit card, which had enough on it to cover the payment. But the missed payments equalled more then my credit limit of $500.00,by $23.00, but it couldn't be so i asked to push the third payment back, which they did but it also added it to the total owing so I was putting money away each pay day to catch up. I would have been able to get it soon. But I got an email a couple of days ago stating your policy has been cancelled for non payment effective September 20, 2018, it was October... Read More
