Although Trupanion offers pet insurance coverage for all North America, the company was originally founded in Vancouver in 1998 as Vet Insurance Corp before opening its doors as Trupanion in the US in 2000. Trupanion continues to be one of the largest, most trusted providers in its home country of Canada. Trupanion provides coverage for over 750,000+ cats and dogs in one simple, easy to understand plan that pays 90% of actual costs with no payout limit. This includes prescribed medications, surgeries, medically-necessary hospitalizations, diagnostic tests, and other treatments.

Trupanion's policies include a wide range of coverage options making the company an excellent choice for pet insurance. You can enroll your pet from birth up to 14 years of age. They are the only company that can pay your veterinarian directly at time of checkout to eliminate the reimbursement model.  Trupanion prides itself on paying out more on the dollar than any other pet insurer on the market. Summary

Trupanion has comprehensive coverage, no payout limits and 24/7/365 (including holidays) customer support all make it an excellent choice for financially protecting pets and pet owners against any sudden illness or accident. Like many of the top pet insurance services, it does not cover pre-existing conditions. The company's 90% reimbursement rate and no payout limit is just about the best deal you are going to find. Trupanion is the only pet insurance company who can pay your veterinarian directly, within seconds, at time of checkout. If your veterinarian does not offer Vet Direct Pay, Trupanion processes the majority of their claims within 2 days, many within minutes. There seems little going against Trupanion in terms of the overall quality of the services they provide. If you are looking for pet insurance in Canada, Trupanion is a must-look-at option.

Trupanion has been a blessing for our dogs. Very satisfied with the service and not ever worrying about the cost of care.

Horrible...I am just into my 2nd year and found out that they changed my premiums from 87.00 per month to 112.00 per month without any notice, they just take it out of your account. When I called to find out why, the answer was...it is the cost of living in Alberta. I have never made a claim. The customer service person, "rudely" said they had sent out emails to advise us of the increase...I have double checked all of our emails and there is nothing.

I agree this insurance isHORRIBLE DO NOT GET IT. I am paying 250 per month for the dog and they declined more than half the problems with my dog. More important they claim the dog had a pre-exisitng condition 18 month prior to obtaining a policy with them. My dog wasn't born 18 months prior to obtaining policy. I hired the best animal litigation lawyer could find and she's in the process of suing them. Its not worth the headache dealing with Trupanion!

Terrible. I signed up for Trupanion for my puggle in 2007, at $87 per month. We were told that it was best to do this young in order to keep the rates low. The rates have gone up 20% per year regardless, the initial 'sales' pitch was not accurate. The policy document states that rates are set based on veterinary costs, but the rate just goes up by the 20% set out in the policy every year no matter what. We are now paying $200 a month which is $2400 a year. Vet visits, vaccinations, regular check ups are not covered. My pup had teeth removed and that was a very long process to have covered, and we paid the deductible. Everything else that has occured we have paid out of pocket, even... Read More

I have had my dog enrolled with Trupanion since 2011 when she was 6 months old. Back then I paid $56/mo premiums. My dog is now going on 8 and the premiums are $197/mo. I called to see what raising my deductible would do for lowering my premiums...not much really. Although my dog has had one major surgery and a few minor lumps removed over the years. I have paid $7611 in premiums over the years. Trupanion has covered $9800 out of the $12,000 I have submitted. SO if you look at it in terms of I have paid 7611 in premiums and been covered 9800 by Trupanion, they have only saved me around $2100 over 8 years...that's something like $22 per month!!! When I called to cancel I got the... Read More

I have both my cats and my dog insured with this company, I've made one claim which was easy and fast to be rembursed. The have fast 24/7 phone service and allow you to change things easily over the phone and on the site. I've had no problems with this company yet and have no reason to look elsewhere.

I enrolled my puppy when she was 5 months old in May 2017 and the premium was $79.40. I have never made a claim since then. However, I have received an email yesterday informing me that the premium will go up to $100.74 as of May 2018 which is over 30% within a year. I called and was informed that although the premium wouldn't go up when the pet aged and owners wouldn't get penalized with number of claims submitted, it would go out if the vet equipments cost and vet school fees go up in my area. She mentioned the premium might go down if the cost goes down. Really? do you think the equipment cost and school fee will ever go down? I cannot image how much I will be paying when my dog...
