When it comes to our most highly-rated pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws and Petplan take the lead.

As industry leaders, both companies offer the most comprehensive coverage, benefits, reimbursement, claims, services, and deductibles.

Similarly, both enjoy stellar reputations among consumers, with Healthy Paws being the top choice among our readers and Petplan being praised for the attentiveness of the provider’s representatives.

What do their policies cover?

Both companies hit all the major coverage points, such as:

  • accident
  • illness
  • hereditary issues
  • congenital issues
  • cancer
  • chronic illness
  • accidental dental issues

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers extremely comprehensive coverage without any caps or limits, including advance testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications.

However, Petplan shines for its additional coverage. Unlike most providers, Petplan covers treatments for behavioral issues on all policies with an annual limit of $15,000, incorporating anxiety disorders such as traveling or separation anxiety, noise phobias, and destructive behaviors like house soiling.

Petplan also has the most comprehensive coverage of dental injury and treatment of periodontal diseases including broken teeth, extractions, and advanced treatments such as a root canal, with no condition limits.

The company also covers holistic and alternative treatments for pets, such as acupuncture or chiropractic treatments as long as it is administered by a licensed veterinarian.

Both compete in the benefits department. One major perk of Healthy Paws is that there are no caps on coverage – either annual, lifetime or per incident – regardless of the plan the owner chooses for their pet.

Many other providers offer unlimited benefits as their highest-level plan, whereas this is included in their standard price, making this one aspect of the company’s coverage that stands apart from the rest. Petplan has annual limits which can be set to $2,500, $5,000, $10,000, $15,000, $20,000, $25,000 or unlimited.

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance review
Healthy Paws is hands down the best pet insurance company out there. Their claims are seamless, quick, and easy. Their customer service is second to none. I was skeptical after dealing with another company that was dishonest years ago with another cat but after she passed, I swore I would never have to choose whether to treat or euthanize due to cost again and I decided to look into pet insurance again. Healthy Paws had one of the best reputations and was very reasonable compared to other reputable companies. My mother also had Healthy Paws and only had good experiences with them so I felt confident choosing them. I’ve been with them for about 1.5 years before I needed to use my coverage for my cat’s surgery with a board certified surgeon at a specialty hospital. Healthy Paws did not question the cost or tell me to look for a less expensive option, instead they didn’t even question it and reimbursed me the 80% within days! Originally I applied for direct pay to the vet and they also approved that within a day(however this vet did not accept direct pay so I went with the reimbursement )! I could not be happier with Healthy Paws and the piece of mind it brings me having my cats insured by an honest company! I will be a client for life.

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance review
I have been a loyal Healthy Paws Pet Insurance customer since 2019, when my beagle Maisie was just 5 months old, and I’ve always hoped never to need it. However, this past month, Maisie, who is now 5 years old, gave us quite a scare. She ended up in both our regular vet and emergency care for fluid on her heart and in her belly. Thankfully, Healthy Paws made the claims process straightforward, and they quickly reimbursed me for her treatment. One recommendation I would give to new policyholders is to proactively submit all your dog’s medical records each time they visit the vet. Healthy Paws requires all records to process the first payout, and that did cause a slight delay in my case. However, overall, the experience was positive. I was even touched by the follow-up email they sent a week after her check-up to check on Maisie’s progress. I highly recommend Healthy Paws for anyone seeking reliable and compassionate pet insurance. Their support during a stressful time was invaluable, and I’m grateful for the peace of mind they provide.

Petplan insurance has never refused a claim or made me fight to get reimbursed for necessary pet care. Without Petplan I honestly don’t know if I could afford to care for my English Mastiff Bartleby. He has allergies and a joint issue. I would recommend getting Petplan as soon as you get a new furry family member.

Fetch Pet Insurance review
I've had PetPlan for years, I think around 8 years now and I cannot be happier with their coverage, speed of processing claims and the amounts that they cover and reimburse. They do not split hairs, and I never had a question or a doubt that they were not being fair in their reimbursements. I've had three cats covered through them, out of which one had to be put down due to acute renal failure and it cost in the ER hospital fees in thousands of $ (LA, CA). They paid me back everything, minus the deductible and up to 80% for the ER/specialty care. Then I adopted my second cat, who is still rather young, but he just had a second bout of pancreatitis in his short 5 years of live. He barely survived and the bill again was in thousands of $$$ for having to rush him in between an ER and ER Specialty hospital. PetPlan again covered a fair deal and sent me a check within 10 days. No questions asked. Fair coverage, happy customer and my cat pulled through, thankfully to this great insurance and even more so to the staff of the two hospitals that took a good care of him. Thank you PetPlan!

Regarding the online quoting system + let me include multiple pets on same quote - can't figure out how to pay an annual amount rather than monthly - they add $25 to the first payment for account set up =deal breaker

I've not actually had my pets covered under this insurer, but they are among the ones I obtained quotes from while shopping around. I have 2 cats; a 4 yr old male & a 12 yr old female. The female is actually in better health than the male, with his frequent UTIs, however because she is over 8 yrs old the best plan they will give me is a $500 deductible & 70% reimbursement, with various limitations. And at the same rate as the comprehensive plan for my male, which has a $100 deductible & reimburses at 90%.
