When it comes to insuring your furry loved-one, it’s important to pick a company that has a stellar reputation, plenty of coverage, and no fine-print when it comes to benefits.

Healthy Paws and Trupanion hit all of these points, as both companies have A+ ratings with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), often have positive customer feedback, and offer comprehensive coverage on all the major points pet owners should be looking for.

But while both companies run head-to-head in some areas – such as unrestricted vet selection and coverage – flexibility (as well as price) could be a sticking point for consumers when choosing between these two companies.

What do their policies cover?

Both Healthy Paws and Trupanion cover all the major areas customers should expect out of a pet insurance policy:

  • accidents
  • illnesses
  • hereditary issues
  • congenital issues
  • cancer
  • chronic illnesses
  • dental accidents (like a broken tooth).

Neither company covers preventative care or wellness (as most companies do not), but Trupanion does cover behavioral therapy, prosthetics, and mobility aids, unlike Healthy Paws.

However, services like acupuncture, behavioral therapy, chiropractic therapy, homeopathy, hydrotherapy, physical, and rehabilitative therapy are offered at an extra cost or “rider” through Trupanion.

Trupanion also has additional "owner assistance" coverage at an extra cost. This can cover boarding fees for a hospitalized pet, cremation or burials for accidental deaths, or holiday vacation cancellation costs.

Healthy Paws offers all of these services at no extra cost.

Cost Comparison

Overall, Healthy Paws outranks Trupanion in terms of pricing.

Trupanion's starting monthly premiums tend to be more expensive than Healthy Paws.

However, the real sticking point for consumers may be that they cannot adjust their reimbursement percentage with Trupanion and that the company also charges extra for owner assistance or alternative therapies.

However, both are flexible in terms of being able to choose deductible amounts.

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance review
🐾 A Heartfelt Thank You to Willow Grace Veterinary Hospital in Middletown DE and Pinnacle Veterinary Specialists in Glen Mills, PA 🐾 This past Sunday was incredibly tough for us. Gus was in severe pain, trembling and barely walking. Having seen something similar before, we rushed him to Willow Grace. The amazing staff there suspected it was a back issue again, but thankfully, not as severe as before. However, by Monday night, things took a turn for the worse. Gus could no longer use his back legs, was crying in pain, and we felt absolutely helpless. After a quick call Tuesday morning, the compassionate team at Willow Grace swiftly got us an appointment with a neurological specialist at Pinnacle Vet. The staff at Pinnacle Vet were incredible. After examining Gus, they confirmed he had a herniated disc in his lower spine. Faced with a very hard decision, we were overwhelmed by their support and kindness. The MRI alone was $3,500 and surgery was estimated between $8,000 and $10,000. Thankfully, when we adopted Gus, we also got pet insurance through Healthy Paws. Reaching out to them, we were met with some of the most understanding and supportive people. We are beyond grateful that our policy covered 80% of the expenses. On Tuesday, Gus underwent emergency surgery and we’re relieved to share that it was a success! He was released today and is now resting at home. The next 6 weeks will be challenging, but he's already showing signs of improvement. If there’s one thing we’ve learned from this experience, it’s this: pet insurance is absolutely worth it. It made what would have been a hard decision easier, and we couldn’t be more thankful to everyone who helped us get through this. So many friends have said they always thought about getting the pet insurance but never followed through. Do yourself the favor, get the insurance. Thank you again to the incredible teams at Willow Grace, Pinnacle Vet, and Healthy Paws for your compassion and expertise. You’ve given our boy a second chance, and for that, we are eternally grateful.

My dog was attacked by a pit bull and had several serious wounds. She required several hours of surgery but is now almost fully recovered. I had not needed to use my Healthy Paws insurance before this incident and was dreading seeing the response from my several page invoice from the wound care pet hospital. To my surprise within a short time my bill was reviewed and paid without questions to my full coverage. It was quite a relief when my focus was on my pet. My emails and calls to make sure I had submitted correctly were all handled with personal care and compassion. I highly recommend Healthy Paws as your choice for pet insurance.

Your company is a scammer. I chose 1 star for my review and I am trying to choose 1 star here too but it won’t let me.

Trupanion Pet Insurance review
We bought our dog as a puppy from a breeder who recommended Trupanion. We joined because premiums were reasonable. However, during the past 2 years, our premiums have nearly doubled. Our dog has had 2 ear infections, the cost still below the $350 deductible mark. Since the second ear infection, we clean his ears daily to prevent further ear infections. We also brush his teeth twice daily to avoid the huge cost of teeth cleaning. But if we don’t spend the quoted $800 per year cleaning his teeth, no future dental coverage is provided. As of this month, our yearly insurance cost will be $1,209 plus $800 yearly dental requirement which totals $2000 per year. $2000 x an average of 10 years of life is $20,000. We have never spent that amount on vet services for any of our previous five dogs! Much too expensive for our budget.

Regarding the online quoting system + let me include multiple pets on same quote - can't figure out how to pay an annual amount rather than monthly - they add $25 to the first payment for account set up =deal breaker

Liston in their customer service department was awesome. He explained everything clearly and went way above the call of duty to help. I am so glad that I cam back to Trupanion, No gimmicks or hidden fees. Straight forward so you really do know what you are paying for and what is and is not covered. How good is that? Thank you Liston! Jerry

I've not actually had my pets covered under this insurer, but they are among the ones I obtained quotes from while shopping around. I have 2 cats; a 4 yr old male & a 12 yr old female. The female is actually in better health than the male, with his frequent UTIs, however because she is over 8 yrs old the best plan they will give me is a $500 deductible & 70% reimbursement, with various limitations. And at the same rate as the comprehensive plan for my male, which has a $100 deductible & reimburses at 90%.

My boy, "Mr. Pipes," has been through hell these last few years. He's had his gall bladder removed, several bouts of pancreatitis, a stroke, an inflamed liver, tumor biopsies and more. Our total vet bills have easily topped $20k. Trupanion has covered 90% (excepting exam fees) with absolutely NO hassle. They even directly deposit the funds into my checking account within 2 weeks of submitting the claims. I'm impressed beyond belief. It honestly seems too good to be true, but it is.
