Tokio Marine is the largest and oldest Japanese insurance company. The firm does business worldwide and is headquartered in Tokyo.

In 2015, the company purchased HCC Insurance Holdings, a large American specialty insurer with experience in the travel insurance market. Through that acquisition, Tokio Marine now offers travel insurance under the name Atlas Travel Medical Insurance.

Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Tokio Marine's Atlas travel medical insurance offers coverage that is more limited in some respects, but also more affordable than many of its competitors.

Their policies, which are backed by very solid financials, are geared toward medical coverage and do not cover trip cancellation or other non-medical travel-related losses.

While information on the company's reputation is scanty, the data that is available suggests this is a sound choice for people who are primarily concerned with the possibility of incurring medical expenses while traveling.

Tokio Marine Plans & Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Atlas travel medical insurance is primarily a medical benefits policy.

The company does not cover trip cancelation but insures against trip interruption for those who fall ill or become injured while traveling. There is a small benefit available for lost luggage, yet personal travel-related losses are not the primary focus of their plans.

The company's policies include personal liability and hospital indemnity coverages, which is somewhat unusual in the industry.

Tokio Marine Customer Assistance Services

Extra Benefits - 4.1 / 5

As its name suggests, Atlas travel medical insurance focuses on reimbursing policyholders for medical expenses incurred while traveling, so they do not offer travel assistance or concierge services.

Neither do they provide 24/7 support or have a mobile application. However, their website does have some medical-related support features for policyholders, such as downloadable copies of ID cards and visa letters.

THIS IS A FAKE INSURANCE COMPANY!! Do not buy from Tokio Marine- they literally deny every claim saying it's a pre-existing condition. My mom had a urinary tract infection- and they claimed it was related to her BP and denied everything. They're underwritten by llyods of london- which is not a regulated insurance company so you cannot even file a complaint! You have to file a lawsuit against this worst scam company. There's literally a class action lawsuit against tokio marine for fraudulently denying claims: https://www.lieffcabraser.com/pdf/HCC_Class_Action_Complaint_2018.pdf . DO NOT BUY FROM THIS COMPANY!

Worst insurance company. Their website sucks, support team does not know what their website has. They did nothing until we filled the claim form and uploaded all the visit summaries and bills we paid. Later, they denied all the claims we submitted and their explanation of benefits document got messed up. I was told it may take whole weekend to get their website fixed. Finally, I was told I can appeal on the denied claims but they may get denied again.

DONT BUY THIS INSURANCE FOR SCHENGEN VISA If you are buying this medical insurance for Schengen visa, don’t ever think about it, their policy letter is crap, it doesn’t even have “Schengen” word, which is essential requirement from the European embassies, I have asked for a refund, never paid me back.

AVOID! They are fraud! I wish I had read the reviews. Visited a doctor in August last year, now the clinic sent me the bill because they couldn't make the insurance company pay. I called Tokio Marine to make them pay for it. They said they had sent me a letter with info inquiry which I never received! I checked on the post office they never got anything from them. So they closed the case! They never paid my only claim. Please don't waste your money

Hello, The Tokio Marine system for entering a claim seems rather Rube Goldberg at best; it does not even tell me when the claim is submitted. And "30-45 business days, from the date of receipt" to have my very simple claim reviewed seems very excessive. Why does it take so long?
