Anthem Vision Insurance Review

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield specializes in helping people obtain access to medical, dental, and vision insurance plans, connecting them with the right physicians and health care professionals for their needs. Its Vision plan covers routine eye exams, eyeglass lenses and frames.

Services and Features

Anthem’s Medicare and Dental plans include vision benefits with seven different plans: Standard, Designer 12/12, Designer 12/24, Premier 12/12, Premier 12/24, Premier Plus 12/12, and Premier Plus 12/24. Each plan includes an annual routine eye exam, out-of-network benefits, discounts on eyeglass frames, prescription lenses, and contacts.  

The Standard Plan covers annual routine eye exams with a $15 co-payment for every member per calendar year. Standard members may also enjoy discounts of up to 40% on eyeglasses, frames and lenses. Standard plan holders are entitled to out-of-network benefits of $30 towards the cost of an eye exam and up to a 25% discount on laser vision correction surgery.

The Premier Plan also has a $15 co-payment per member per calendar year on annual routine exams. Each family member is entitled to one yearly free frame from Davis Vision Premier Frame Collection, or an allowance of $80 on other frames. Each member has an allowance of $100 for contact lenses per year in lieu of eyeglasses.  

Premier Plus plans don’t require co-payments for annual contact lens fitting, and members are entitled to one frame per year from Davis Vision Premier Frame collection, or an $120 allowance on other frames. If contact lenses are preferred over eyeglasses, there is a $110 yearly allowance per member for contact lens. A $30 allowance on eye exams and $35 on contact lens fittings is given for out-of-network benefits. Anthem also allows up to 25% discount for operations within its Laser surgery network.  

Vision Insurance at Anthem

Anthem’s vision plan is only available as a rider with their dental or medical plans. However, if one should opt for dual enrollment, their coverage does offer good discounts on eye frames, prescription lenses, and even contact lenses. Anthem also has a good number of participating locations and doctors nationwide, making it easy for members to enjoy its in-network benefits.
