Ambetter is a health insurance company owned by the Centene Corporation, which is a multi-national healthcare company that provides programs and services to under-insured and uninsured individuals. Ambetter offers customers affordable health care plans in 14 states including Arkansas, Arizona, Georgia, Florida, Indiana, and Nevada, among others.

Ambetter is Centene Corporation’s option for a health insurance marketplace, so it’s intended for individuals who lack health insurance, and possibly don’t qualify for traditional plans.

What’s Included in Ambetter’s Health Insurance Plans?

Ambetter health insurance plans offer prescription coverage, mental and behavioral health services, integrated care management, maternity and newborn care, 24/7 nurse advice line, Ambetter Telehealth, My Health Pays Rewards, and optional vision and dental coverage for adults.

The company has three plan options to choose from: Ambetter Essential Care, Ambetter Balanced Care, and Ambetter Secure Care, which are classified as bronze, silver, and gold, respectively.

The Ambetter Essential Care offers lower monthly premium payments, but higher out-of-pocket expenses, the Ambetter Balanced Care offers the best balance between monthly premium payments and out-of-pocket expenses, and the Ambetter Secure Care has higher monthly premium payments, but limits your out-of-pocket expenses.

Each plan has a different type of coverage and payment, but all of them include essential health benefits such as emergency services, hospitalization. outpatient or ambulatory services, preventive and wellness services, maternity and newborn care, pediatric services, mental health and substance abuse services, and laboratory services, among others.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Ambetter offers flexible healthcare options that fit different budgets and needs, with a few perks like the company’s My Health Pays Rewards, which allows customers to pay for medical expenses with the money they earn through the program, a 24/7 nurse advice line, and Ambetter Telehealth, which provides 24/7 phone or video access to in-network providers for non-emergency health issues. Additionally, Ambetter members can manage and pay for their account online, and the company’s website offers helpful tools like a provider search engine, and educational articles for those who want to learn more about insurance.

Having said that, Ambetter health insurance also has its drawbacks, like the fact that it’s only available in 15 states, you must sign up during the open enrollment period, and that the company may have stricter requirements to qualify than other traditional insurance companies, so customers should keep this in mind before purchasing.

Ambetter is being sued in all 15 states they provide insurance. They had to pay back $58 million dollars last year due to not paying claims. This is the worst insurance I have ever been involved with. This was my personal insurance as well as my being a provider for them in the past. They deny everything. An ex-employee testified in court they are told to deny claims so they can keep the money. I would stay as far away as I could from this insurance. I had to go to the emergency room and 5 months later am still under the care of 8 doctors. Ambetter has paid nothing!!!!!

Working with ambetter customer service for almost 3 months was the worst customer service I have ever experienced in my life. The employees take your number in case you get disconnected, however they do not call back if a disconnect occurs. On more than 5 occasions, I explained my situations and got hung up on by customer service because they seemingly didn’t want to deal with the complexity of my situation. This was not a disconnect, they had my number to call back, they sounded unpleased and you could hear a phone click every time. At times it was me asking to speak to a supervisor, as soon as I asked to speak to a supervisor, they would hang up the phone. Never was my situation... Read More

Ambetter website is a mess! There is no online provider directory so you have to use their "search" function. It fails to list major providers just a few blocks away. Just now tried their "cost estimator" which is also a disaster. It claims it does not know the cost of seeing a physical therapist or occupational within 100 miles of Saint Louis. The website gets 1 star.

Worse than having no insurance. Repeated denials of basic and necessary services, which must be preapproved (as in MRI). They demanded that I have treatment before approving the MRI, then DENIED the very treatment they required. This company has an dogged determination to NOT help patients with legitimate necessary care. Will be cancelling right away. If you have hours to spend sitting on hold and being told repeatedly, "I'm not trained in that area", then maybe but, I'm guessing that is not how you wish to spend your day. Especially when in need of medical attention. Hard NO. Please look at any other option. Again, will be cancelling and without insurance rather... Read More

Billed me for a month before I indicated when my coverage should start. Absolutely no help from customer (non) support. Horrible way to start things off. If you haven't signed up yet....rethink it.

I screwed up and got Ambetter at the beginning of the year and then found out that nobody took it, then I find a place that does and I end up being led down a path of no MRI, NO tests of any kind, yet they were going to recommend that they deaden my spine and burn the nerves and then get me to a pain clinic to finish me off with pain killers, so I said GF and changed to a different carrier. Not once did I get to speak to a real DR. All decisions for your dont-care with Ambetter are made based upon if you are dumb enough to go for it. I truly want a refund, and I rarely get online to post something like this, but my feet are numb and I have paid them the premium so Ill shut up now. Hows... Read More

I had Ambetter in 2018 and found that no doctor in the area really took this insurance. Fast forward 2021, I knew I was having surgery this year and needed insurance. I decided to try Ambetter again to to finding my doctors were taking this insurance. I had outpatient surgery end of January, and Ambetter paid the claim in full with the contracted hospital with no issues. After receiving the final bill from the hospital, I truly only owe the max out of pocket. My policy is not cheap, but did pay when I needed it to.

I've also had the "we don't accept this insurance" problem when finding providers. Ambetter never told me they contract dental and vision through 3rd party health insurance companies, nor have I ever been issues insurance cards for other companies. I had to call Ambetter and ask very specific questions to even find phone numbers for my "actual" health insurance providers. Nothing on their website, in my account info, or my benefits information indicates any of this.

I can't find a doctor, dentist, or eye doctor that will take this insurance! I have called everyone! Even if they're on the network list. You call their office," NOPE, WE DON'T TAKE THIS INSURANCE!"
