Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I cannot say enough great things about Healthy Paws. We have 2 bulldogs and both are on the plan. One of our poor dogs has had multiple health problems this year. We've had to pay out over $10,000 in bills. Unrelated issues and each time huge bills. From a cherry eye to a leg operation and an ER visit. We would have gone bankrupt but thank god for Healthy Paws. Each time they paid out as agreed. No push back no weird exclusions. We had the 90% reimbursement checks before the credit card bill was even due. I tell every friend and pet owner I meet. You have to get this health insurance. All you do is take a photo of the bill from the vet and submit. Takes 5 seconds. They even call and email... Read More

Healthy Paws has taken very good care of my dog Winnie. They usually respond to claims very quickly and mail out checks right away. The online claim filing process is easy enough. Everyone I have ever spoken to from customer service has been friendly, helpful and compassionate regarding our medical issues. Of course coverage is never perfect but that is the industry. I do feel that Healthy Paws is an honest and ethical insurer and that they have your pet's best interest in mind.

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance has been the best thing I've ever purchased for our pet. It is easy to file a claim and they are very prompt in processing the claims and getting back to you in a timely manner. Their website is very easy to use and you can file claims electronically, thus enabling you, to get a faster response in regards to your settlement. I have to say their monthly premiums are reasonable as well. Overall a great company with a great product.

This company has been wonderful! I started off with a different pet insurance company - I only stayed with them a month because there were various hurdles in that month that made it difficult to work with the company. I searched customer reviews and found Healthy Paws! Boy am I glad I did!! We had this insurance for about 6 months when our boy Leo started showing signs of lameness. From first signs of trouble to diagnoses was only about three weeks (we had to wait to get an appointment with specialist) and a month later he underwent surgery to correct the problem. Each time I had to contact Healthy paws their associates were amazing! First question was always "How is Leo doing?"... Read More

I adopted a dog three and a half years ago and signed up with Healthy Paws soon after the adoption. My dog has had several major medical issues including Heartworm, emergency surgery to remove a foreign object in his intestine, and pneumonia. He has also had several run of the mill type things like rheumatoid arthritis and mild anemia. We've been to the vet a lot and I have been very happy with Healthy Paws as my Pet Insurance provider. Their process for submitting a claim is very easy, it just takes a minute. In addition, the processing and reimbursement goes quickly. They also have been very good with coverage. I actually had a disagreement with something relating to coverage... Read More

I have been a Healthy Paws member since 2013 and a pet insurance holder for over 10 years. I switched to Healthy Paws from one of the more well known Pet Insurance companies because I was not getting the customer service that I wanted. After doing a lot of research I chose Healthy Paws because of price, good reviews and above all because of their life time-no limit on payouts. You are also able to chose the coverage level and deductible that works for you. Since that time I have used their services on numerous occasions. Not a good thing for my pets but a great thing for my wallet. That aspect takes the worry off the pet parents and lets us just worry about getting our fur babies healthy.... Read More

Healthy Paws is INCREDIBLE. Signing up was extremely easy, and they make it very easy to understand and customize your coverage - from deductible to coinsurance. Submitting claims through the app is a breeze, and Healthy Paws keeps you abreast of where your claims are in the process, explaining why a claim was covered or denied in easy-to-understand language, and sending reimbursement checks fast! They also cover more claims than any other pet insurance I have found, and their customer service is amazing! They even sent us a get-well-soon e-mail after our dog's recent surgery. Healthy Paws really cares about your pet, and their great customer service, coverage and rates makes me happy me... Read More

Leo has made a full recovery from his tongue surgery. He is bouncing around again and fully able to eat and drink. Lucky for us the infection didn't swell his tongue so much that he couldn't breathe, he just couldn't eat or drink water (right when a heatwave was coming). I was able to teach him how to drink from a Camelbak by squirting water into his mouth for the first couple of days while we tried to find out what was going on. Luckily we were able to get him the care he needed and he is healthy again and I can enjoy his snuggles again; nothing like a 100lb lap dog?. Thank you HealthyPaws so much for being there for us!!!! Your customer care and coverage is fantastic!!!

Last January, 2017, I changed the pet insurance for my 1 1/2 year old Lab to Healthy Paws. Approximately 3 months later my lab tore her ACL and required expensive TPLO surgery. Despite HP's great reviews, I was nervous about how well they would cover a new client. I printed out their forms and submitted our claim by mail. Within a few weeks I received a check for 80% of the surgery, x-rays, meds, hospitalization etc. They covered everything! I was very impressed and so happy I switched my pet's insurance to Happy Paws. Unfortunately, last month she tore the ACL on her other leg. This time I downloaded their APP and simply snapped a picture of the vet's statement and clicked... Read More
