Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Healthy Paws has been been a tremendous partner with our golden retriever. Love the phone app for submitting claims - and the fast turn around time. A vital investment for any pet parent.

I have had a very positive experience with healthy paws. We insured our dog as a puppy, and have had good luck until this year when she decided to eat more grass than she could digest. After 5 days of being sick and multiple X-rays, the vet recommended surgery. What a relief to just say yes and not have to worry about the cost. The app is great and submitting a claim is very easy, and the customer service is top notch - can not recommend highly enough!

I'm so glad we have Healthy Paws for our dogs. We recently had a dog that had to stay the weekend at an emergency vet and the bill was close to $2000. We only had to pay $200 and there were no questions asked about our bill. We simply submitted the bill and 15 days later received our reimbursement check. Submitting claims is also a breeze. I highly recommend them.

My dog recently had ACL surgery. Healthy Paws was so easy to work with. Whenever I called I spoke to the nicest and most helpful people. Submitting a claim was so easy. I just faxed over the invoice. Payment was made within 3 weeks of my dogs surgery. So happy that they even cover physical therapy. I highly recommend Healthy Paws.

I was skeptical about the pet insurance market in general but was relieved that I had made the decision to purchase it when, a few months later, my young rescue dog got severely ill. It turns out I couldn't have picked a better company, too. The insurance product has turned out quite valuable to me, financially. But I have been amazed by the quality of customer service. The company is responsive, polite, helpful and caring. It is only a shame that they only provide insurance for pets, not humans.

With two high energy Australian Shepherds patrolling 15 acres on the Wisconsin peninsula, I am so happy I made the decision to invest in pet insurance. Thankfully, I chose Healthy Paws. Both of our dogs have had major health issues. Gracie accidentally caught a branch in her side and basically scalped the skin off of her belly. Two surgeries plus an extended stay at the emergency animal hospital had her bills sky rocketing. Our other girl, Rascal, tore the tendon in her front leg last year. Her recovery took months with multiple cast changes. Healthy Paws has addressed our claims at record speed, gone the extra mile to contact our vet when paperwork was missing and supported us as they... Read More

Healthy Paws has exceeded my expectations on all levels for providing insurance coverage for my dog Morgan. When I initially took out a policy for Morgan I thought I would need it if she sustained an orthopedic injury based on how active she was. I was not expecting a chronic condition of diabetes with ongoing needs for medicine, and certainly not expecting a recent emergency splenectomy with a stay of 3 days post op in ICU after surgery. Healthy Paws covered 80% of the 9200.00 vet hospital bill, and the claim was processed within 10 days. Not only do they provide great coverage at a reasonable rate; they genuinely care about Morgan. If you are considering pet insurance, I recommend... Read More

Two years ago I used this same means (ConsumersAdvocate.org) to evaluate the Pet Insurance for my dogs (daughters) and I selected Healthy Paws. I thank you, it was an excellent choice to select Healthy Paws. My Chloe (French Bulldog), has been operated on two occasions from the veltebral column. If we had not had Healthy Paws, we would not have Chloe with us or she would be paralyzed, because we would not have been able to pay the full cost of these operations. The last operation was this month and it cost $ 5,128. Healthy Paws paid 90% of the cost, which was a great relief. The first operation was in 2016, with similar results. Thank God, Healthy Paws and the hospital, our Chloe is in a... Read More

We had 3 labs prior to our current guy Jude and didn’t have pet insurance for any of them. Our yellow lab had a few issues here and there and our vet had recommended we get insurance. I had done some research but didn’t think it was worth the money. I was wrong! He had 3 knee surgeries in the last 2 years and crossed the rainbow bridge in June. We spent close to $15,000 out of pocket to care for him. We enrolled Jude in Healthy Paws Pet Insurance immediately upon adopting him, we knew we couldn’t afford those costs again. Jude recently had an intestinal blockage and needed to have emergency surgery –we would have struggled to pay without the insurance. It was easy to submit the claim, the... Read More
