Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I cannot say enough positive things about Healthy Paws. From the day I brought my puppy home 4 years ago, Healthy Paws made it incredibly easy to get her insured. Having done thorough research on all of the pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws was the leader as they offer lifetime care at an affordable price. Their customer service team is incredible, and their mobile app makes it incredibly easy to submit claims. My dog had a bout of pancreatitis earlier this year which was stressful enough but knowing that Healthy Paws was there to help made the situation a tad less stressful. A few weeks ago my dog tore her ACL and had to have a surgical repair, again Healthy Paws provided me with... Read More

My husband and I couldn't be happier with our decision to protect our dog, Bailey, with Healthy Paws. While I had always had excellent experiences with them in the past, we just recently had to file our first claim- Bailey suffered a very common ACL (CCL in dogs) tear and needed knee surgery. I sat through an hour consultation with the surgeon where he went over and over details of two different types of procedures in depth, discussing the short and long term pros and cons of each. I am happy to say after first calling Healthy Paws to understand my coverage, I was easily able to say to the doctor "this isn't about the money, he's covered 90% so the difference in price is negligible.... I can't say enough great things about Healthy Paws. When our dog was a puppy, I did a lot of shopping around for insurance after he got sick with pneumonia and I'm very glad that I picked Healthy Paws. Their coverage and customer service are second to none and their claim submission and payment process (take a picture of the invoice and send through their mobile app, payment through direct deposit or check) could not be easier. Their customer service reps even send personal follow-up notes when they notice significant episode claims, e.g. a torn cranial cruciate ligament surgery. I have fully recommended Healthy Paws to friends, family, and our vet!

We've been insured through Healthy Paws for over two years- since we got our little Frenchie boy. We had signed up for the 90% coverage and had a separate wellness plan with Banfield for routine work that wasn't covered. We have never had to use the coverage until recently, when our furchild had several emergency visits and finally, a neurological consult with the best Veterinary Neurologist in Florida to get the spinal surgery that he needed. Healthy Paws were angels to help us care for him. The surgery alone cost over $8000 and they worked directly with the clinic to disburse payment on his discharge day. We only took care of the consultation cost and the remaining 10%. The clinic... Read More

I must give this group the highest rating. They have allowed me to be able to afford my dog and have gone way beyond to help me with navigating the expense of an ill dog. I honestly feel everyone with a pet should have this insurance. It isn't a luxury, it is a necessity.

Pretty decent premium and great service. You must have insurance if you have a dog. Healthy paws has been great for my family and covered a surgery that was absolutely imperative to have. Easy to contact and not a ton of back and forth. They offer direct deposit as well, which speeds up the process even more!

Purchased healthy paws insurance about a year ago after leaving another company. The other insurance had limits on cost and only gave a small percentage back on certain types of injuries. Saw healthy paws reviews and BBB rating figured I give it a try. My dog was injured and needed a hospital stay, this was the worst time ever my pet like many is a family member. I purchased the 90/10 policy for my dog and submitted the claims online and like the company stated within 10 to 14 days received a check. Best company ever no mistake on the reviews..

Get pet insurance! I cannot tell you how invaluable it has been for me and my animal. Actually, I can! Let me tell you my story. I grew up with many, many animals. Most of them were 90-100% outdoors (dogs, cats, horses...) and not one of them (specifically the "house" animals) ever got sick or in a bit of trouble in their lifetimes! I was the prime candidate for thinking "Pfft I do not need pet insurance." But shortly after finding my Bengal kitten, and after months of unemployment, when I finally landed a job, I thought "yanno, it's $15/month, what do I have to lose, especially in these early years." I now pay about $21/month after several years with Healthy Paws, but I will... Read More

I lost a beloved pug in 2009 and not until the fall of 2012 was I emotionally ready for a new pet. Turned out I adopted two 8 week old pug litter brothers. Love at first sight and continuing always. Anyhow, I did due diligence on pet insurance since I want to give them the very best. It became apparent very soon that Healthy Paws was the best of class....at least on paper...so I immediately enrolled "the boys". During the intervening 5 years we have only had a few minor insurable issues and I have been singularly impressed with Healthy Paws. One of the pugs, Little John, recently blew out his left rear knee ...in a dog sense...with a luxating patella which made him into basically a three... Read More

Our mini Dachshund, Annie, had a back issue. We took her to the emergency Vet clinic on a Friday. I reached out to Healthy Paws and received support not only in the form of insurance coverage but also reassured that any follow up treatments would be covered as well. Healthy Paws followed up all of their promises in writing and then called back later to check on Annie and to see if we had any additional needs. They were simply amazing.
