Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

My cat Uni fell off 7 stories from my apartment window on 9/13/2017. Fortunately, Uni was conscious when we found him. He suffered from multiple bone fractures but luckily there's no major internal injury (he had blood in his urine for the first couple of day though). After staying in the hospital with lots of examinations and surgery, Uni came home after 6 days hospitalization. The medical bill became a tremendous pressure to me, Uni would never had the best treatments if there's no Healthy Paws pet insurance supports. I am SO glad that I chose Healthy Paws as my pet insurance -- they show cares about Uni and they reimbursed the bill within 2 weeks. I highly recommend Healthy Paws as you... Read More

Have had this insurance for over 4 years now. They have paid out for every claim with no hassle. My claims have not been small totaling at least $9000.00. Our lab likes swallowing things whole! As advertised I only paid the copayment and exam fee. I highly recommend this company as I truly believe they care about our pets.

Healthy Paws definitely helps with the financial stresses of caring for a sick pet. As far as accident and illness coverage goes, they are the best. My husky pup, Huck, (2 years) is covered for 80% of costs with a $250 deductible and the insurance has paid for itself and then some. Huck recently learned to unlock and open doors, something which led to his getting hit by a car less than a block from our house. Initially our vet thought it was mostly superficial wounds but by the next day he had to be hospitalized at the specialty vet hospital bc his lungs started leaking air and he couldn't breathe. The hospital informed us he'd need chest tubes that would allow air to be sucked out of him... Read More

This company served us very well during the time we had our pet. Sadly, our puppy was diagnosed with cancer at only 15mos of age. The good news, we were able to treat him, thanks to Healthy Paws. They covered all or our expenses at 80%, including radiation treatments. They were very helpful and I highly recommend them. Pet insurance isn't widely used, but was a blessing for us to have.

My Frenchie Piper was suffering from ear infections since we got her as a rescue. Now after 3 years the specialist found out she had a mass ( tumor) As a result she needed a CT scan and a surgery. The result was a $3600 bill. I talked to Healthy Paws and they were AMAZING. Within a week I had a check for the 80% Healthy Paws pays. And keep in mind, they already paid a lot for all the treatments over the last 3 years. Thank you Healthy Paws 💋

We got health insurance at the same time we received our puppy 3 years ago. At first, it seemed like a 'waste' of money because Healthy Paws doesn't cover things like vaccines and flea-prevention, which can be a large percentage of your monthly costs for your dog. Then, our dog started having allergic reactions. To everything. Ear infections, hives, constant scratching, and dandruff. He's been receiving treatment on and off for these reactions for over two years now. The culmination has been specialized allergen testing to figure out what our dog is allergic to (40 out of 50 allergens, wow), and then vaccines that he will be on for the rest of his life. Healthy Paws has helped... Read More

My boyfriend and I decided to look into getting our new puppy Paisley Pet Insurance, after having medical issues with our last dog. We began doing a lot of research and decided to go with Healthy Paws. They have different plans to choose from, and if you have any questions they are super easy to get a hold of a live person, to help! Well we made the right decision, at just under 2 years old Miss Paisley needed TPLO surgery. She is doing great and Thanks to Healthy Paws who made the claim process quick and easy, gave us plenty of time to be with our snuggle monster! What impressed me the most was the follow up emails to check in and make sure she was doing well! I recommend Healthy Paw... Read More

In June of 2012 searching for pet insurance, we enrolled our dog, Dewey into Healthy Paws Insurance and have never regretted it. After his last surgery, we were reimbursed for our expenses before his stitches came out. I have never had problem with any of the expense I submitted to Healthy Paws. Their great staff keep me informed of everything going on with his claim. The rates are reasonable and competitive with other pet Insurances (I checked them all out before enrolling him). I have filed 10 claims and not one has been challenged or rejected. Healthy Paws is used by all of our friends at the Redhawk doggie park and the our thrilled with the low cost (compared to others). You really... Read More

When Chance was in the hospital, Healthy Paws made the claim process simple and quick so that we could focus on our pup. Days later they approved our claim, no questions asked. Suddenly this huge financial burden was completely lifted off our shoulders. I am so thankful I have pet insurance...and if you have a puppy you should not be without this! We have had healthy paws insurance for our dog since we first adopted him 7 years ago. Our poor little guy has had several major health issues in the past couple years and healthy paws has been awesome in terms of their coverage, their customer service, and the ease of filing claims. We are especially grateful that there are no lifetime caps on coverage of chronic conditions. Healthy paws has saved us thousands of dollars, and, more importantly, we are able to give our dog the care he needs without having to weigh the expense of care against his quality of life. Really thrilled with this company.
