Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

My mastiff puppy developed a condition in his shoulder joint that required surgery. Every person I spoke to at Healthy Paws was concerned, knowledgeable and eager to help. They paid their part of the bill with no fuss. I am very glad I chose to buy pet insurance from them.

My experiences with Healthy Paws Pet Insurance have been a real treat! Not only are they quick in reimbursements but they show that they really do care about the pets they insure. One that stands out was when recently, a rather unexpected incident happened where my dog sniffed up a foxtail, and we had to take him to the ER first and when they couldn't extract it, we were directed to a specialist. Now, mind you, neither were cheap, but within a week after subitting photos of the receipts through the app, a check was in my mailbox. Simple as that! The cherry on top of this impeccable service was when I received an email from Healthy Paws asking how my dog is doing (he's much better... Read More

Healthy Paws is the best! When our fur son was diagnosed with cancer, I thought my world was over. But when the tests came back, and surgery was a success I knew it was because of Healthy Paws that we could give Coleman what he needed. The cost of the specialized treatment he needed would have been cost prohibitive. But the small amount we pay every month is well worth it. We chose an 80% reimbursement with a $250 deductible. In the end we only paid $600 out of pocket and our boy is still here with us giving love and enjoying life. We are so grateful for Healthy Paws! I chose to get insurance as soon as we chose to add another member to our family. Best. Move. Ever.

I have a rescue pitbull, Sammy, who is approximately 7 years old now. A few weeks back she tore her ACL after chasing a ball. She was totally lame and I was heartbroken to learn she needed to have surgery. i knew this want going to be cheap but I knew I didn't need to worry about the financial side of it because I have Healthy Paws medical insurance. The bill was covered at 80%. Using Healthy Paws is so easy. Download their app, take a pick of the bill, and send. I received my reimbursement check within a week. I'm not a huge fan of insurance companies normally but Healthy Paws is different. They really do care about my Sammy girl and follow up with emails to check how she's doing. Thank... Read More

I was shocked to learn how much it will take to diagnose Ponyo when she experienced seizures, but was also fortunate that I enrolled Ponyo with Healthy Paws earlier this year. When I called Healthy Paws, the representative comforted met and informed me that MRI, Cat Scan, Blood Test, and many other tests required to diagnose the causes of the seizures would be covered. No hard decision needed to be made, but a straightforward “yes” to the vet. The claim procedures were also simple and prompt. I will recommend Healthy Paws to anyone who has a furry family.

I've had Healthy Paws insurance for my 3.5 year old Boston terrier, Gizmo, since she was 8 weeks old and it's been such an amazing game changer for us. Very unfortunately we've had some bad luck with freak accidents and genetic issues leading to a broken tibia, knee surgery, outrageous allergies, and most recently a cataract. Healthy Paws has been there through absolutely all of it processing our 35+ claims in just a few days, sometimes even just a few hours! Healthy Paws has made it possible for me to get the very best care for Gizmo while saving $12,000!!! Words don't express how great this company is and the benefits of getting a policy as soon as you bring home your new baby. My... Read More

Our kitty, Duncan, a black and white tuxedo cat, was attacked by two large dogs who had gotten into our backyard. We got the dogs off him and rushed him to vet hospital, where it was touch and go. Having pet insurance allowed us without hesitation to get the extensive treatment necessary to save his life. He is much more than a pet in our home. Duncan, rescued as a kitten, has bonded with our special needs daughter and has made her life so much happier over their seven years together. All she has to do is call his name and he's right there beside her, purring as loudly as a Mack Truck. When she saw him all battered in the hospital, she burst into tears and so did everyone else. So we are... Read More

After a completely unexpected turn of events our newly adopted puppy had to go in for emergency surgery. Having Healthy Paws Pet insurance was the best decision I've ever made. Due to having the pet insurance I was able to give my puppy the best possible care without having to worry about finances. They have a great customer service team and a very quick turn around. I highly recommend anybody who is looking for pet insurance to get Healthy Paws. You can't go wrong. They help me save my babies life.

We have had Healthy Paws for several years. This is my second review of their company . Very recently my four year old dog was in such pain he couldn't stand . Our vet determined he is suffering from terrible arthritis in his hip and spine. They prescribed pain meds and rest . We pursued other options for our boy . We found a licensed vet that is trained in acupuncture and chiropractic medicine. She has become a valued member of my Bear's care team. After I made the appt with her, I went to read my policy and found that Healthy Paws will cover, within our policy, the acupuncture and chiropractic treatments!!! What a tremendous relief! We can handle all the everyday expenses for our dogs,... Read More

Phenomenal Customer Service....signed our Rat Terrier up for pet insurance with the hope we would never have to use it....but woke up one morning and he had vomited his breakfast and subsequently nearly lost concientiousness....Trip to ER and regular Vet and a lot of bills later...Riley has thankfully recovered...and the claims process was extraordinarily user friendly and the claims adjuster couldn't have been easier to deal with. Healthy Paws even sent a follow up subsequent to the finalization of the claim to check in on my little guy....this was a very worthwhile investment....would recommend them to all my friends and family with 4 legged babies.
