Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I compared the rates of different pet insurance companies through Consumer Reports and Healthy Paws came out on top by quite a bit. Their staff is incredibly friendly and accessible, and they processed my claims very fast. When one of my dogs passed away, they sent a hand-written card expressing their condolences. This is a fantastic company, and I highly recommend them for pet insurance.

Unexpectedly, my 1 1/2 year old cat needed hip and knee surgery. I had no idea how he could have so badly injured both areas of his right leg but luckily I had added him to my insurance policy the day I adopted him as a kitten so he was covered by Healthy Paws! I have three dogs and two other cats. The dogs are considerably older than the cats and I expected they would be the first to need surgery on hips/knees/etc. I was shocked that my healthy, young boy was the first of the six to go under the knife! It was not only heart wrenching to see my young boy in need of a major surgery, it also about stopped my heart to hear the estimate of the surgery. The total came in at $5000,... Read More

My 2 1/2 year old chocolate labrador has had 2 major health problems in her short life. She is the first pet that we have ever purchased insurance for and boy are we glad we did. We have had bills in the thousands and Healthy Paws insurance covered 90%. Working with Healthy Paws has been smooth and easy. I just take a picture of my receipt, submit it on their app, and I get an email response back within the week, and a reimbursement check arrives in the mail shortly after. Their coverage is superb and I would highly recommend them to anyone. They even sent me a personal email after Winnie's surgery checking in to see how she was doing.

I evaluated a lot of pet insurance companies before I chose and I gotta say 80% of your costs covered and great customer service made Healthy Paws my top choice. My baby kitty is doing much better now thanks to the ability I had to keep her hospitalized to finally get her back to eating and for her fever to go away! Cause was unknown and I'm so glad she recovered! Thanks the healthy paws it didn't cost me a fortune to get the necessary care she needed to push through and everything was processed so easily and quickly!

I've had pet insurance with this company since we adopted my youngest dog in 2011. And I've never been displeased. Claims are easy to file and quickly reviewed and I've never had anything denied. They have covered major surgeries, specialty procedures (arthroscopy), chemotherapy...they even cover my dog's joint supplements and pain medications every month (we got her insurance as a puppy so her orthopedic problems were not preexisting). Our most recent experience was when Maya was bitten by a rattlesnake. Antivenin is extraordinarily expensive (over $650 per vial!) and we were able to treat her quickly and without worry knowing that bill would be taken care of. The absolute best thing... Read More

Our dog Khan wasn't feeling well and the vets had to run all sorts of tests. The great part about pet insurance is you don't have to pick and choose what tests to run because your covered. We were so glad that we had pet insurance, and Healthy Paws is super fast and easy. Our only regret is that we didn't go with a higher covered plan. Healthy Paws is reliable, fast and easy to use.

I switched from Pets Best to Healthy Paws and have had nothing but excellent service since. My Labrador Milo is now almost 10 and as he has got older, he has needed more medical attention. However, unlike Pets Best, Healthy Paws has not hiked my premiums exponentially after each claim. Their claim process is so quick and easy. No more cumbersome filling in of forms. It's a simple upload of the paid invoice and Healthy Paws review and do the rest. The turnaround is quick, there are seldom questions and they even reach out to the vet for clarification and any additional medical records they need to support the claim. I'm kept up to date with the status of my claims and the coverage... Read More

Our bulldog Jitsu is just a year old. He has already had a soft palate surgery and just recently he was admitted to the after hours emergency hospital for aspiration pneumonia. We are so thankful we purchased pet insurance. Healthy Paws has been very easy to work with and reimbursed us very quickly. Highly recommend.

When we adopted Mabel, I was really hesitant about paying for insurance for her; especially since money was tight and she was a healthy little pup. But, with all the health problems my other dogs had faced, I decided to try it and see how it went. I can tell you it was one of the best decisions I ever made in regards to Mabel's care! When she dislocated her knee cap and the vet told me the price of the surgery to repair it, I was so relieved to know that Healthy Paws would cover 90% of it (based on my policy). If we didn't have the insurance, I am not sure what we would have done. We didn't have the money or credit to pay for such a surgery on our own. This was my first claim after being... Read More
