Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I came home from work on a Tuesday and one of my boys (Ares) didn't greet me at the door; which has never happened. I knew immediately there was a problem. I found him in the backyard hiding under a bush. He was lethargic and slow getting into the house. He was seen by his primary veterinarian the next day, who stabilized him and referred us to a specialty hospital for further evaluation. He had a partial abdominal blockage from a piece of cloth he had ingested and needed immediate surgery and intensive care. The estimate was $8,000.00+; a sum I didn't have. But what I did have was Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. I can't say enough good things about this company. To say that... Read More

My Australian Kelpie has been covered by Healthy Paws Pet Insurance for about 6 1/2 years. In that time, we have submitted several claims to them, for reasons ranging from bladder infection, hypo thyroid condition, and high kidney numbers, to the onset of arthritis. They have always been very prompt in processing and sending us our checks. I have also called them on several occasions, and have been very satisfied with the information that I have received. I feel that, compared to the insurance I have previously had on other family pets, Healthy Paws is the very best pet insurance company around, paying 90% of my expenses, after I pay for the office visits, on non preexisting... My fur baby tore his CCL and required Orthopedic surgery. Healthy Paws immediately cared for my claim but, bigger than that, they checked in to see how Obi was doing. Best customer service I have ever received. I was able to focus on Obi's recovery instead of worrying about the bill. Healthy Paws and their staff exceeded my expectations. If you're looking for pet insurance, I highly recommend them.

Excellent Service at a great price! I have a two year old Yellow Lab who has had two TPLO knee surgeries on separate knees in nine months. The service each time was wonderful and prompt service. On her most recent surgery Healthy Paws turned around four separate claims in just four days which is amazing to me. Every time I have talked on the phone with them I have always been impressed with the kindness and concern of their staff and it is nice to know that they all care about Roxy as a pet and not just as an account. The rates are very reasonable and can be customized by deductible and by coverage percentage. I opted to have a $500 deductible and to get reimbursed at the rate of 80%... Read More

Can't rave enough about dealing with Healthy Paws. My dog recently had a ruptured disc and needed spinal surgery. Healthy Paws was quick to reimburse us for everything covered in our policy with no questions asked. This is real peace of mind for pet owners!

These people were so awesome. Covered everything they were supposed to without any hassles. I will go through them again after I get over the passing of my lil girl. So compassionate. They even sent me a personally signed card from the office by everyone there. Signed in real ink and sugnatures. Simply amazed.

Healthy Paws has been an excellent value. Other pet insurance plans seem to have endless exceptions and lifetime maximums. I have been able to get my dog TPLO surgery, which would have been prohibitively expensive without it. The premium is reasonable and the turnaround on claims is very fast. Like any other pet insurance, pre-existing conditions are not covered and they do not cover the initial visit/consultation. Other than that, they really provide the best coverage and customer service I've experienced so far as a pet owner.

Healthy Paws pet insurance is amazing! Our boy kitty Jiva broke his tail and had it amputated. After it his tail healed he ate something that obstructed his bowels and had to have surgery. He stayed in the hospital for two nights. Healthy Paws covered the bulk of our bills after we met our deductible. We have the reimbursement of 80%. Without Healthy paws our bills would have been close to $5,000. They also have unlimited benefits! A few days later, I received an email from Tim at Healthy Paws asking how Jiva was doing. What an amazing, thoughtful and caring company. If you have pets I would highly recommend insurance from Healthy Paws. We are lucky our handsome boy kitty is... Read More

Shasta, our sweet rescued Alaskan Husky, has gone through a lot of health-related problems in the past year that she has been with us: Heart worm, Ehrlichia, a fatty tumor, and a very weak stomach at the beginning. Given the frequency of her first trips to the vet, we knew we need some help in taking care of the bills in the future, did our research on pet insurance, and found the best: Healthy Paws! We could not have made a better choice. Healthy Paws covers a broad set of pet health expenses and has been supporting us throughout all Shasta's treatments. We just upload photos of the receipts in the Healthy Paws app, and they start processing in a couple of days. So, now we can focus... Read More

The customer service manager was dismissive in emails, called my male dog "she", and was in general not at all helpful. After an emergency visit, they refused to cover the emergency fees, while the website specifically says emergency care is covered and it is not listed under the exclusions. They told me to take it up with my vet, which is clearly what I want to be worrying about when my dog is ill. The whole purpose of pet insurance was to reduce the worry and burden when my dog needs to see the vet, and instead they have turned it into a huge headache. Not worth the monthly premiums when they won't pay the bill when the time comes.

Official Response

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
Kaitlyn - We’re sorry that you were not satisfied with the customer service you received. As our Customer Liaison Manager explained to you in an email, we have a colleague with a female dog with the same name as yours and she accidentally said “she”. We apologize for the error and any concern it may have caused. As we stated in a previous response, we do our best to be transparent throughout our website, during the enrollment process and in the policy documents available to each client in their online Healthy Paws account regarding the limited exclusions of our policy. Those exclusions are pre-existing conditions, preventative/routine care and the office visit fee. Anyone visiting our website can see this information on our “Benefits, Coverage and Exclusions” page. By making the office visit fee (vet exam, emergency exam, recheck or consultation) part of the pet parent's financial responsibility, it allows us to offer a complete accident and illness plan at an affordable monthly premium. Our policyholders value comprehensive accident/illness coverage and unlimited benefits at reasonable rates, which is why they choose to assume the responsibility of paying for those costs. Since your invoice listed the charge as an emergency exam, we could not provide reimbursement for that fee. We were able to cover the balance of that claim based on the deductible and reimbursement level you chose at enrollment. We sorry your dog was ill and hope he is on the road to a complete recovery.
