Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Best pet insurance around. 90% reimbursement for any illness and they pay really fast. It's piece of mind and I'd highly recommend the monthly investment for any pet parent.

Subject: Re: Checking on Duke I can't thank Healthy Paws enough for not only your kindness and care of checking up on our puppy Duke but also for the ease healthy paws brought us in this difficult time. When I first got the insurance my husband was very skeptical and thought it would be a waste of money. Boy was he wrong!! Within the first couple of weeks my puppy ate a pair of socks that we had to bring him into the vet for as an emergency visit. One day later he broke his leg! My husband was still skeptical that the insurance would cover any of this. Within a short time of submitting the claim I received two confirmation emails from Healthy Paws that they were covering both... Read More

Totally reliable. My dog had stomach surgery after swallowing a toy and within a week from filing I received reimbursement. Filing process was totally simple. They even followed up with a personal email to check on him afterwards. Highly recommend!

Healthy paws is easy to use and responds quickly to my claims. My dog likes to sniff and taste test the world and we've had a few major vet bills because of it. It's great that I don't have to worry what the bill will be- I just tell the vet to administer whatever care he needs. I can quickly snap pictures of the vet invoices with their app on my phone and shortly thereafter a reimbursement check comes in the mail. The description of what is and isn't covered is always clear and I feel like I'm getting a fair deal. I would definitely recommend their coverage.

I was never sure how I felt about pet health insurance in the past, but decided to sign my chocolate lab up for coverage a few years ago. I shopped around and even had friends recommend a few companies, but I wasn't sold on any of them for some reason. Then I found Healthy Paws. I live in the Seattle area so I was happy to support a local company, and I loved how simple their plans were (AKA less fine print). I even called customer service to make sure I wasn't misunderstanding anything before I signed up because it seemed way too simple and straight forward. Healthy Paws has amazing customer service and they are always there to answer any questions. Their claim submitting process is so... Read More

This is a great insurance plan for your pet and, in my opinion, the best on the market. My 3 year old foxhound had surgery on his left leg last spring which cost $ 4,100. We only had to pay 10% and we received a check for 90% of that bill. The check arrived within a week of filing the claim. Dealing with a $410 vet bill was much easier than $ 4,100 !! My foxhound ended up with the same injury on the right leg this year. Same thing, only this time the fee had gone up to $ 4,400. Again, the check arrived within a week of filing the claim. For both surgeries, I received an email within two weeks asking how my dog was recuperating.

Where to begin. First and foremost, Healthy Paws genuinely seems to care about my dogs health and has always followed up with me to check in on the status of my dog when taken in to the vet. However, the 5 star rating is a result of more than just honest caring. At a time when my dog gets sick or hurt, the last thing I want to worry about is cost of care. And after having Healthy Paws insurance for my dog since he was 8 weeks old, I have learned that I no longer need to. Unfortunately, my dog has had his fair share of bites, illness, etc. and EVERY SINGLE TIME, healthy paws has reimbursed me for the amount as indicated in my policy. Doesn't sound like they went above and beyond, but... Read More

Our young dog decided to eat a bottle of children's advil (it was closed, he managed to open it), and then 2 months later, a pile of rags. For the first snack, we had to induce vomiting and he had a week of IV fluids and veterinary care. For the second snack, he ended up with 2 major abdominal surgeries (they didn't get everything on the first try). We weren't sure what Healthy Paws would reimburse us for, but they paid for 80% of everything after we met our deductible. It was a huge relief to us financially, and we are so pleased we decided to insure him when he was young!
