Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Amazing company! I have been so impressed and thrilled with the service Healthy Paws has provided us. With the Healthy Paws app, submitting a claim could not be easier and I am so impressed with how quickly all claims are processed. Our dog has had some stomach problems so we've had to submit a few claims and each claim is processed easily and promptly. Needless to say, we love our dog and hate seeing him get sick. The last thing you want to do when they are sick is stress about the cost and whether or not claims will be accepted. Healthy Paws' policies are totally clear and they are true to their word. My dog was sick just last week and the reimbursement check has already arrived! The... Read More

This is a long review but I think you'll find some details that will help you make a well-informed decision about why you should choose Healthy Paws. Since the day we joined, we have been absolutely thrilled to be Healthy Paws customers! I have been in the customer service business a long time, long enough to know when I'm getting lip service customer service and when I'm getting customer service from a company that truly values its customers, and Healthy Paws is a truly human company. They have caring, thoughtful staff that do an outstanding job with customer service, and really with every aspect of their business. So let's start with the basics of why you'd want to become a... When we first adopted our pup from the local shelter we felt the need to try out pet insurance. We started with one of the 30 day trials policies for free and wanted to stay with them as we received a discount offer by email from them. A bit of dispute over the offer they sent to us so we started a search for another provider. That was a good move for us! We found Healthpaws - got more coverage for less monthly payments. Our beloved pup has had more problems that we ever anticipated, with some eye surgery just last week for $1400.00 - Healtypaws cover 90% of it for us. They have never questioned or disputed any claim and the speed at which Heathlypaws turns the claim around after our... Read More

I have never had a pet in my life until now (i'm 42) largely because of the responsibility and potential costs for accidents. After only 2 months of having our puppy, my worst fear came true and she broke her leg. We were looking at a $5k surgery to correct. Luckily upon the advice of a friend I had purchased pet insurance with Healthy Paws. We had only been a customer for a very short time and they still honored their commitment and we were able to have the surgery she needed. Malani is on her way to recovery, and I am so thankful we made the investment in pet insurance! I highly recommend Healthy Paws, they were easy and helpful to deal with on our claim.

I am so thankful that I have Healthy Paws insurance. When I first looked into this, there were not many other companies offering pet insurance. Having lost a dog to cancer the same year I lost my job - I now could figure out how to add this to the monthly budget. I discovered that the monthly cost for two dogs far outweighed the cost of the cancer treatments I paid out of pocket. With the third rescue, we found that dog #3 was a very small add to the monthly premium. You select the deductible you are comfortable with, and the reimbursement percentage. Over a year ago, our 14 year old border collie mix had successful treatment for melanoma. Late last year, removal of (and chemo for) mast... Read More

My dog has had tons of issues from skin, colitis, random throwing up, yeast infections... you name it. Healthy Paws always covers it, no issues and hassle. Submitting a claim is very simple on my iPhone and the check comes in the mail a couple weeks later. Would definitely recommend them.

WARNING, THEY DO NOT COVER TEETH EXTRACTIONS DUE TO PERIODONTAL DISEASE. Trupanion and Petplan does. I wish I knew this because my dog, Buffy, had her teeth cleaned and the vet found six teeth needed to be removed. three were from periodontal disease. Healthypaws do not cover this and now since I've submitted the claim, I can't switch to other dog insurance since any recorded periodontal disease will now be considered pre-existing. My two other dogs have it in their dental records, so should we need any future tooth extractions, even if we switch pet insurance, would be considered pre-existing. Healthypaws will only cover teeth extractions if there was damage due to accident. Teeth... Read More

HealthyPaws is like an addition to my pet family. They have unbelievable customer service and process claims quickly and are very transparent in their process. My Dalmatian has had 2 major knee surgeries along with a few intestinal/digestion issues and I have zero complaints about their process and have been very satisfied with the HealthPaws team. I HIGHLY recommend HealthyPaws to anyone looking for pet insurance. If you want the best for your pet and want to feel like you have an entire team of people helping you than HealthPaws is for you! I have never once felt like just a policy number.
