Overall Rating: 5 / 5 (Excellent)

Spot is more flexible than many of its competitors, offering unlimited annual coverage with no vet restrictions and no upper age limits on insured pets. Though there are waiting periods on accidents and illnesses, these are typical for the industry and shouldn't be cause for concern. You may be able to find a slightly cheaper rate elsewhere, but Spot's policies are pretty competitive and worth a closer look, especially if you've felt restricted by the terms some other pet insurance providers set.
Spot offers a 30-day money-back guarantee but this is only available if no claims have been approved or paid. Still, the guarantee does allow you to try out Spot's 24/7 veterinary advice hotline, which is part of your policy benefits from day one.

Spot Coverage

Coverage - 5 / 5

Spot offers all the core coverage options you'd expect from a pet insurance provider, including coverage for accidents, illnesses, and hereditary and congenital conditions. You may choose from accident-only policies or accident and illness policies. Spot makes it easy to find something that suits your budget and provides the protection your pet needs. There's no vet network to worry about, so you can continue taking your dog or cat to the vet you feel most comfortable working with.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 5 / 5

Spot customers may choose from a variety of annual coverage limit options, from $5,000 to unlimited. This spread is wider than what you find with most pet insurance providers. Unlimited annual coverage limit options aren't that common, so Spot is worth a closer look if you don't want to worry about running into annual limits.

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 5 / 5

Spot reimburses you for the actual cost of your pet's veterinary care. This is the most desirable reimbursement model because it enables you to better predict how much you'll have to pay out of pocket. You may choose between 70%, 80%, and 90% actual cost reimbursement after you've met your deductible. The higher the reimbursement percentage you choose, the less you'll pay out of pocket, but the higher your premiums will be.

Maximum Percent Reimbursement

Deductibles - 5 / 5

Spot allows you to choose between an annual deductible of $100, $250 or $500, which is on par with many companies the industry. Once you've met this deductible, Spot will pay up to the reimbursement percentage you selected for additional veterinary treatments.

Pricing: How much does Spot cost?

Cost - 5 / 5

Spot's pet insurance policies are a little more expensive than some of its competitors' plans but still fall within the average range. Actual costs will depend on where you live, the type of pet you have, and the level of coverage you want.

Starting Monthly Premiums

Dog: Sample Monthly Premium, 1 year old male Golden Retriever in zip code 92683
$40.57
Cat: Sample Monthly Premium, 1 year old male American Shorthair in zip code 92683
$16.94
Rate Details: Annual Deductible: $500, Benefits Cap: $5,000, Reimbursement Model: 70% of Actual Cost
Available Discounts: You receive a 10% discount for any additional pets you insure beyond the first.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Spot enables you to enroll dogs or cats at eight weeks or older with no upper age limits. Some pet insurers won't cover older pets, so Spot is a great choice if your pet is already showing some grey whiskers. It's also a great choice for households with pets of multiple ages. There is a 14-day waiting period for coverage of illnesses and accidents, but this is in keeping with many pet insurance policies.

Claims & Service

Extras - 5 / 5

Pet owners can't always distinguish between minor and major pet health matters. Spot plans include an online pet hotline that customers can use to talk to veterinary care experts 24/7. This is a great feature for those times when you're not sure whether or when your pet needs to be seen by a vet. Customers can submit claims online, through the SPOT App, mail, or fax. If you have questions about how long it takes claims to process, you should reach out to Spot for more information.

In your review of Spot Pet Insurance, you mention pre-existing conditions. We have had two claims disallowed due to definitions by Spot which have no clinical basis. The first occurred following dental procedures on our Sheltie. Her mouth is too small for all teeth and some were extracted. Spot disallowed the claim because, during a previous exam the vet noted in the medical record that the dog had a grade one dental condition - meaning there was tartar on the teeth. Spot said grade 1 indicated "severe dental disease" and disallowed the claim. Grade one is on a scale of 1-4. Spot has failed to provide their scoring algorithms. The second denial was again based on Spot's... Read More

I didn't think one company could make so many mistakes. When I sent in a claim for my dog, they sent me messages numerous times that they did not have it. When I contacted the vet's office, they had sent it to Spot twice. When I took my dogs in for their Wellness Exam (after the insurance had been effective for three months), they did not pay for the exam, even though I had it under my coverage and the specifics were listed as covered. First, they told me it wasn't covered, then they told me I took them in before I had coverage. I went back to each dog's claims and saw that they had listed each dog had "spent" $50 on "wellness," which was obviously not true. I cannot imagine how this... Read More

They're very quick to get you to enroll but leave out all kinds of important information: The latest.... I wanted to lower my percentage of reimbursement so my premium would go down... I tried doing it online; however was not able to do it so I had to call them. I was told by the rep that the reason I was unable to lower it myself is because I can only change it at renewal time. I WAS NEVER TOLD THIS...I'm paying a huge amount as I have 2 dogs, once who is aging... I strongly recommend you train your sales agents to explain everything... the good, the bad and the ugly. I hadn't thought of asking if they allow a change in this when I signed up... At this point in time, I'm considering... Read More

Website is not user friendly- finally after days I get an email telling me they received my claims Good news I thought since I met my deductible Not so fast- now they’re telling me they requested medical records- mind you - both claims are not complicated I view this as a delaying tactic Signed up w them because of great reviews but they’re really too new to get any negative reviews Very pleasant customer service excellent all I kept getting were excuses- as a client who’s paying a lot of money to insure two dogs I don’t want excuses - I want a solution They’re no better than anyone else I’m giving them 2 weeks to reimburse me - if it takes longer I’ll be opening a claim with... We've had spot insurance for over a year of the 6 claims we filed they only covered 2 of them. My dog fell ill, and we submitted the claim and they denied it with no explanation. You try and call them and it's an hour long hold time, or you can email with 24 hours in-between responses. Told them I was upset with the turn out asked for explanation or to please cancel the coverage, they just emailed me back canceled coverage as of 12/1. They obviously don't really care about pets or the customers at all. much better options out there. don't be fooled because they pay to be #1

Share your experiences to help others make better decisions Update on Labrador 1 Yr and 2 months Old and Coviniently paying a year of insurance, Just processed a claim and completed, with no explanation whatsoever. Called Spot Pet Insurance and they said our dog was diagnosed with gastroenteritis according to their Spot Staff, which is a desease and not an accident. The thing is our dog ingested something that caused stomach upset and vomitting blood but guess what they will not cover it because they keep saying its gastroenteritis. Ingesting foreign object is included for the accident insurance that they offer but if your dog got gastroenteritis as a result of ingesting foreign object... Read More

Funny how they can get away with it and play you with the policies they have. Oh well, time to find another insurance...
