Generali scored high with us because, as travel insurers go, they offer some of the most comprehensive coverages, highest payout maximums, and many additional policy features other providers don't.

All standard trip interruption and cancelation reasons are provided for, and then some. Additionally, the company has generous provisions for baggage and trip delays. Generali really shines when it comes to its traveler assistance services.

Along with all the usual customer assistance features, the company also makes provision for such things as specialty food delivery, an emergency cash advance of $500, and travel companion meet and greet services. Pound for pound, one of the most extensive offerings out there.

Generali Global Assistance Plans & Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Generali offers some of the highest payout maximums in travel insurance coverage of the plans we evaluate.

The company will cover up to a whopping $250,000 max for medical care, and up to $1 million for emergency medical transportation. There are three plan levels that, aside from a few items, only differ in maximum payouts for certain coverages.

The Standard (cheapest) plan only differs in that it won't provide reimbursement for sporting equipment damage or delay, and only provides accidental death & dismemberment coverage if injured in an air flight accident.

Generali also stands out in the trip interruption/cancellation category. They will reimburse up to 175% the cost of the trip due to trip interruption, and also provide a generous $1,000 travel delay reimbursement. If you purchase the premium plan, the coverage kicks in after a mere 6-hour delay.

Generali, unique among travel insurers, also provides trip cancelation coverage in the event of sickness/death of a service animal. In addition to all the standard trip cancellation reasons, the company also includes coverage if you are unable to get a vaccination necessary for travel, and coverage if you have to cancel due to notification of a successful organ match.

Some additional coverages of note include optional rental care damage coverage, up to $10,000 to transport a companion to your bedside if you are under emergency medical care, and reimbursement for unauthorized use of credit cards.

Terrible - and smug. So cruise was canceled well over a year ago. I got a voucher from Viking to rebook as I requested. I asked Generali if I could also get a travel insurance voucher as I never made a claim against the policy. It took them over a year to respond despite calls and emails. " Yes you can get a rebook voucher but it will be an additional $200 on a $500 policy. " This is even though the cost of the trip never changed. They never did give me an adequate explanation as to why I had a higher premium. "Trip Cancellation Benefit has extended for longer time in the future until your new travel dates" was their response. Please rest assured we design our insurance prices to cover your trip as accurately as possible. While planning a trip well in advance is preferred, the time between booking and the time you actually travel can introduce more variables causing you to have to cancel. Weather, which often has an impact on travel plans , is another factor that can require us to adjust your rates seasonally to account for higher or lower risks. As such, pricing is adjusted to account for the likelihood of cancellation. In regard to the purchase of medical only, Generali doesn't offer a medical only plan so unfortunately we cannot accommodate that change. To mitigate these issues, you can redeem your voucher for insurance closer to your departure date. We will have a customer service team member reach out to you to discuss that option.

Their phone tree for the Travellers Assistance line has no option to ask a question not related to a travel emergency or making/checking on a claim. Not to mention every time I called over the course of a few days, their system said it was "in system maintenance w/ high call queue," and I couldnt get anyone to answer/no option to hold. Further, this dept. kept either not sending me the coronavirus testing site info I asked for or sending it for cities other than the 1 I requested. Very frustrating; I won't buy from them again. Thank God I didn't have a claim. What a joke. --April 2021

Well i take a vacation and pay for insurance (1st time) Got a problem during travel (Car problems) try call emergency number for the insurance and of course they don’t answer, take car to the shop to fix it and try to enjoy the vacation, Never buy insurance from this people they really workless

FRAUD & THEFT!!! My family and I wish that we could leave "0" stars. This company literally stole thousands of dollars from us and have refused to return our calls for almost 10 months. Our dad had a policy with this corrupt company and then suddenly passed away right before his trip. We have been contacting them at least twice a month since this happened in December and no one has returned our calls, Ever. This horrible company is nothing but thieves and we will be getting the proper legal help involved. DO NOT TRUST THIS COMPANY!!!

ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE COMPANY!! I purchased a policy through Generali Travel Insurance and they double charged my credit card. I contacted them about being double charged and got the run around for 2 weeks. I sent them screenshots of my credit card statement showing that I was double charged and their response was that “you only have one policy”. They finally decided on a “resolution”, unfortunately that was to cancel the policy and instead of issuing a refund they charged my credit card a third time. I don't normally submit comments on this sort of service, but under the current circumstances(C-19), I expected that there might be trouble getting paid for my cancelled trip. I am guessing there must be many thousands of people who cancelled trips out of Covid fear and didn't understand that this was a choice they made which could have bankrupted the agency. The travel company recommended Generali and said they had a very good reputation. I found that while the procedure was rather involved, in the end those I contacted at Generali were very responsive and I was fully reimbursed.

Total scam! Read reviews on their website where they sell coverage and they get top stars. Then read reviews on this companies claims and they have zero stars. They basicly deny every claim for any reason. I dont think they ever pay any claim unless you die. Had a trip to Hawaii and the governor shut down travel to hawaii for 2 months due to covid 19. Said my claim is denied because Government shutdowns not covered and Covid is also not cover. Claim denied and closed. Total scam!!!!!

I canceled my trip on 4/4/20 for 5/27/20-6/1/20 Due to COVID and submitted documents to Generali Global Assistance Travel Insurance . I constantly get emails verifying that my trip cost was more than I said it was. Ok, with that I resubmitted thru email verification of airline and hotel cancellation numerous times and finally in July I submitted copies of all cancellation proving refunds sent to them certified mail which R. Weaver signed in their San Diego office on 8/8/20. Today mid August still no word from them regarding my refund. I would not recommend this company to anyone!

My wife and I purchased travel insurance months prior to the onset of COVID issues for a condo in Florida which was ultimately, cancelled for obvious reasons. Upon reviewing our options with our travel insurance, the Generali Global Assistance-CSA Travel Protection insurer generously allowed their customers to apply for a voucher to re-apply travel insurance for a later travel date, presumably once travel became safer. Customers need only apply for a voucher online, receive the voucher and, once travel plans were re-finalized, call Generali Global Assistance-CSA Travel Protection and renew a policy for the new travel details. I filed a claim on May 5th with Generali. According to the site - they would process within 30 days - but after 45 days I tried contacting to get an update on the status. I waited on hold for over 30 minutes before I was disconnected. I sent a email through their system with the claim number, and have never heard back. At 60 days I tried contacting them again via phone and email - and have never heard back. In frustration, I went to insuremytrip.com where I bought the policy. They said Generali shows no history of a claim - even though I gave them the claim number and it clearly shows up on their own website.
