Ambetter is a health insurance company owned by the Centene Corporation, which is a multi-national healthcare company that provides programs and services to under-insured and uninsured individuals. Ambetter offers customers affordable health care plans in 14 states including Arkansas, Arizona, Georgia, Florida, Indiana, and Nevada, among others.

Ambetter is Centene Corporation’s option for a health insurance marketplace, so it’s intended for individuals who lack health insurance, and possibly don’t qualify for traditional plans.

What’s Included in Ambetter’s Health Insurance Plans?

Ambetter health insurance plans offer prescription coverage, mental and behavioral health services, integrated care management, maternity and newborn care, 24/7 nurse advice line, Ambetter Telehealth, My Health Pays Rewards, and optional vision and dental coverage for adults.

The company has three plan options to choose from: Ambetter Essential Care, Ambetter Balanced Care, and Ambetter Secure Care, which are classified as bronze, silver, and gold, respectively.

The Ambetter Essential Care offers lower monthly premium payments, but higher out-of-pocket expenses, the Ambetter Balanced Care offers the best balance between monthly premium payments and out-of-pocket expenses, and the Ambetter Secure Care has higher monthly premium payments, but limits your out-of-pocket expenses.

Each plan has a different type of coverage and payment, but all of them include essential health benefits such as emergency services, hospitalization. outpatient or ambulatory services, preventive and wellness services, maternity and newborn care, pediatric services, mental health and substance abuse services, and laboratory services, among others.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Ambetter offers flexible healthcare options that fit different budgets and needs, with a few perks like the company’s My Health Pays Rewards, which allows customers to pay for medical expenses with the money they earn through the program, a 24/7 nurse advice line, and Ambetter Telehealth, which provides 24/7 phone or video access to in-network providers for non-emergency health issues. Additionally, Ambetter members can manage and pay for their account online, and the company’s website offers helpful tools like a provider search engine, and educational articles for those who want to learn more about insurance.

Having said that, Ambetter health insurance also has its drawbacks, like the fact that it’s only available in 15 states, you must sign up during the open enrollment period, and that the company may have stricter requirements to qualify than other traditional insurance companies, so customers should keep this in mind before purchasing.

I really regret choosing Ambetter from Home State Health for my insurance this year. The premium was significantly lower than other options but the savings aren't worth it. I live in one of my state's largest cities but somehow Ambetter has very limited in-network providers here. There is one podiatrist listed in-network and Ambetter's information for him is incorrect. I've spent days trying to find out how to contact him. The Ambetter rep's suggestion was to "drive to the offices in which he has been associated in the past and ask if they can contact him." I checked their network before signing up for the policy and it looked sufficient but when trying to make appointments I find that... Read More

Ambetter customer service is terrible. I have been given wrong information and disconnected several times. They use an out of country call center with agents who have accents that make it difficult to understand. I switched to Ambetter after FloridaBlue became too expensive. I only need Marketplace insurance for a few years until I am 65. Before switch I checked Ambetter's provider listings and was impressed with the physicians on the list. HOWEVER, after I switched and started calling to get an appointment for a physical, I discovered that most of the physicians listed no longer take Ambetter.

The customer service is horrible. I have been dealing with a billing issue that's been escalated 3 times and I called today for the representative to say no escalation was made on my account when I have reference numbers of all of those phone conversations/transactions made on my account as well as the names of the employees I've spoken to. I'm switching insurance companies as soon as possible. Do not get insurance here!

After being an Ambetter member for about 5 years I became eligible at 65 to receive Medicare and no longer needed Ambetter Ins. I was paying 183 .93 monthly through the Healthcare Marketplace. Ambetter disabled my "Health Pays Reward" card causing me to loose $161.00 In rewards dollars that I had earned. The entire time I had the Ambetter Ins I only went to the doctor for the yearly wellness exams. This in my opinion is very unfair. I am writing this review so that others will know to exhaust your rewards dollars on your card before you terminate a plan with Ambetter because that Visa card will be disabled and your earnings will be taken back. Ambetter phone associates could not provide... Read More

Zero stars ! This insurance is garbage. You do not get the same care. They over rule the test and care the physicians want you to have.

NEGATIVE ZERO STARS! This insurance is garbage and I’ll be dumping is as soon as I’m able. The website is useless, most of the Drs on their list don’t accept ambetter. I need an endo so I had to waste my time calling dr after dr. Don’t expect help from the hekpdesk. They have the same access so they call dr after dr to find one that participates. I used telehealth (free) for a uti. They won’t prescribe women over 50 and post menopausal meds over the phone. You’re required to go in to the Drs office. So plan on paying for the dr visit and the test they’ll run. Now, if only I knew of a dr that accepts this crappy insurance. Back to the useless list of Drs and wasting my time on the phone... This is the worst customer service I've ever experienced. Called them 4 times to cancel my plan. Each time being on the phone for a minimum of 20 minutes. Being transferred to other people to be told they cant cancel my plan so I call again. This company is a joke and trying to scam people by continuing to charge them after they canceled their plan.

This is the WORST insurance company ever for ACA insurance! I'd give zero stars if I was able! (I have a policy in IL). I went in for preventative care and then they won't pay! Called their customer service, numerous times, which is located in the Philippines, and they actually have roosters crowing in the background. I am not the only person this has happened to. I hate to see what would happen if I ended up in the hospital. The only reason I took this insurance is because I have numerous health issues, but am considering going without. Save my premium and then I'd have money to pay all the doctors and meds myself.
