Overall Rating: 3.3 / 5 (Very good)

Piper's multi-faceted device can make it an excellent choice for people who don't need a multitude of windows and doors secured. The convenience of the multi-use Piper makes it ideal for consumers with a limited budget and smaller coverage area, but conversely, not ideally suited to larger properties or users looking for individual door and window sensors. The lack of a professional monitoring option may also be a negative, though it can also save a considerable amount in monthly fees.

How does Piper work?

Equipment - 3.7 / 5

Piper's home security equipment essentially just consists of the company's security cameras, Piper Classic and Piper nv. Aside from their video monitoring capabilities, both models also have sensors that monitor motion, temperature, light, humidity, and sound. The Piper app also allows consumers to control some home automation features, such as lighting and appliance control. The devices are all controlled via Z-Wave controllers.

Monitoring Options and Technology - 3.5 / 5

Piper doesn't offer professional monitoring, but rather relies on DIY self-monitoring. To this end, the company's main device, its 180-degree view camera, can be monitored through apps for iOS or Android operating systems. Aside from being able to view the whole room in which the camera is placed, users can also activate two-way audio, and watch a live or recorded video. There are also three security modes for quick customization: home, away, and vacation.

Piper Reputation

Reputation - 3 / 5

Piper doesn't have entries in the Better Business Bureau or TrustPilot. However, reviews across other consumer websites have mixed results. Complaints mainly center not around the devices themselves, but rather with connectivity issues and missed notifications. While this may be due to the relative newness of the company, and may be addressed and fixed in future versions of the products, for now, it's best to keep in mind that since Piper devices work over bandwidth, this should be quick and reliable for your home security to work as advertised.

Piper Summary

In Conclusion

Piper home security falls squarely within the newest trends towards devices that provide all-in-one features, incorporating home automation and video monitoring within a single apparatus. Though just a passive security camera in appearance, the Piper device also has a motion detector, siren, and microphone, with a battery backup just in case. Whenever Piper detects a loud noise or unexpected movement, it automatically sends a video to the connected app on the homeowner’s phone. If the primary contact cannot be reached, Piper also has the option of notifying additional numbers. The camera can tilt, pan, and zoom, giving the user a large degree of control over what it can capture and view remotely. Additionally, the device has a quad view which allows users to see four different shots of the room in question. Piper can also record certain events when programmed to do so, such as whenever it detects a loud noise, someone enters the room, or a door or window opens. Finally, thanks to its connectivity with Z-Wave technology, Piper can be used to turn lights and appliances on and off remotely. The smartphone app allows users to track and verify temperature and humidity. One drawback to Piper is that it doesn’t offer the option of professional monitoring--leaving calling emergency personnel up to the contact. While this can reduce the amount of false alarms sent to emergency personnel, it can also mean a delay in calling the appropriate agencies. The lack of professional monitoring, while a monthly cost-saver, might also mean that the homeowner will lose the potential homeowner’s insurance discount that comes with a monitored system. Though the app can support up to five Pipers, thereby offering greater convenience and coverage to people with large homes, this can become just as costly as a more conventional, professionally installed and monitored system.
