Overall Rating: 4 / 5 (Very good)

The American Kennel Club was founded in 1884 with the mission of advancing canine health and, as the oldest such organization in the US, is one of the best-known and well-respected pet authorities. The organization offers pet insurance plans through its partnership with PetPartners.

Policies offered by AKC Pet Insurance, which are underwritten by Independence American Insurance Company, provide pet owners with tremendous flexibility in policy purchase by separating coverages that some companies bundle in all of their policies and by offering a wide range of deductible and co-pay options and customizable coverage limits.

The coverage you purchase through AKC permits you to see any veterinarian you wish. The company uses a usual and customary fee model for reimbursement and bases fees on average costs in your zip code. If you live in an expensive city, that's an advantage AKC plans offer over plans that base their reimbursement on national averages.

AKC Coverage

Coverage - 4 / 5

Pet owners have many choices to make when they purchase AKC Pet Insurance. Policies can be designed "a la carte" so you can choose the type of coverage you need. For example, congenital and hereditary conditions are not covered under AKC's standard plan, but can be added as an optional benefit. The same is true of alternative and behavioral treatment, which are standard in many other pet insurance plans.

The types of services covered by AKC Pet Insurance are in line with plans offered by most competitors. These include diagnostic procedures, emergency care, surgery, hospitalization, and prescription medication. Emergency ambulance transport is also included in all plans.

Because coverage is highly customizable under AKC Pet Insuranc plans, it's easy for pet owners to find a plan suitable for their budget. My 2.5 year old dog required a stool analysis to determine the cause of a diarrhea outbreak. I submitted the claim and it was denied due to the diagnosis of isosproa. This is a parasite that normally puppies get, and adult dogs throw off. Apparently, my dog had a weakened immune system due to an ear infection the month earlier, and also the stress of being a kennel daycare with a lot of other dogs for over 2 weeks, (while retaining walls were being constructed in our fenced back yard). I was shocked to discover that this vet invoice was not applied to the deductible. I was told that the decision of payment/deductible application is ultimately based on the diagnosis, and... Thieves who do not pay claims owed. I purchased an annual policy for my 9 week old puppy on 2/10/21 to go into effect on 2/11/21 to 2/11/22 to include: companion care, exam plus, hereditary plus, defender, alternative plus. They were giving away one month free companion care which I did not want or ask for. My payment on 2/10/21 was $96.49 because of the free one month of companion care. Each month thereafter I paid $104.54. There is a 30 day waiting period for the hereditary and defender coverage. My puppy went for his 16 week shots on 3/13/21 and the vet noticed he was developing an underbite. Long story short, it’s a hereditary issue and he needed dental surgery to the tune of $4354.50....
