Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I highly recommend buying Healthy Paws Pet Insurance for your pets. First of all, you should always buy pet insurance, especially for a first-time parent like me, and it is never too early! You can rule out more pre-existing conditions. Also, even a young pet can get unexpected diseases. My cat Felix got diagnosed with cancer even though he is only 5 yo. Without my insurance, I could hardly afford the diagnosis procedure (lab test, blood work, etc.), let alone any treatment plan. But since I have the insurance, I can work with my vet to have some treatments for Felix to help him feel better, and seek help from more expensive specialists, without worrying too much about the financial... Game changer. We have 3 dogs, all of them have a plan with Healthy Paws. Recently, one of our dogs underwent a major surgery that was extremely expensive. Decisions have to be made quickly and cost is always a factor. However, that's why we got insurance in the first place. Healthy Paws covered 80% within about 10 days of the initial claim and continue to cover 80% of her medications afterwards. Their customer service is excellent and they genuinely care about your pets. We are so grateful for everyone at Healthy Paws. I wish human health insurance was this good!!

Healthy Paws has really helped to offset the cost of health care for my fur Babies. I only wish I new about them sooner. My dogs will always be covered by them going forward!

We’ve had healthy paws for about a year. We adopted a dog who lived on the streets as a puppy, and wanted the security of a plan that didn’t have out of pocket maximums, as we weren’t sure what to expect. Healthy Paws processes claims very quickly, and even takes the time to follow up and ask how the animal is doing. Their rates are very reasonable. I’d highly recommend.

The best. The best insurance ever. I wish my health insurance was as good and well run as Healthy paws and I have Blueshield PPO. We submit a claim by uploading our documents, a decision is made in few days and we get our check in the mail in less than 10 days. I highly recommend Healthy Paws. This is the first time I signed up for pet insurance and I am shocked at how professional and great Healthy paws is. With a small premium monthly, you can insure fantastic coverage for your pet and you can visit any vet you wish. It is not like human insurance. There is no network to choose. You choose what is best for your pet. It is unfortunate how many pets end up in shelter as their human... Read More

Healthy Paws has been amazing. Without them, I couldn’t have afforded my pet’s surgery. They have been so kind anytime I had questions, and worked quickly to get us reimbursed. They even reached out post surgery to see how Loki was doing. I would highly suggest to anyone who js seeking pet insurance to consider using Healthy Paws!!

Happy, helpful, and at times life saving. We love Healthy Paws, as do my parents, my sister, and all our family members and close friends with fur babies as well. Would definitely recommend. 10 out of 10🙌🏼

Healthy Paws claim process is as simple as it gets- upload the medical information and submit. My claim was submitted on a Sunday morning and was settled within 72 hours. I highly recommend this provider- I wish human insurance claims could be handled so efficiently!

Healthy Paws is a terrible company and please find another as their customer service management failed me in every way for a full refund. I have been with Healthy Paws for several years and due to financial hardship due to a devastating divorce I was left with no income and canceling every service I can to survive. I had no ability to pay my $192/mo premium and received a cancelation notice of 9/29/2023 which I expected. Today 9/9/2023 they charged my credit card without my knowledge and refused to refund the $192 premium. I called immediately and was escalated to customer relation management and again they refused to refund my premium. They are really good at taking our money but are... Read More

Official Response

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
cschwebke - We’re sorry for the issues you are having in your personal life and that you were not satisfied with your customer service experience. As you stated in your review, a Notice of Cancelation with a cancelation effective date of 9/29 was received by you. Until 9/29, your policy was active. Since your policy had a premium payment due date earlier this month, premiums were collected. During your call with our team member, the explained how premiums are processed and canceled your policy effective today. You will receive a pro-rated refund of your premiums to the credit card used on your account.

Healthy Paws is very helpful in case of emergencies with my dog. The process to open a claim is very seamless (you just upload copy of itemized receipt which your vet can provide to you). They process the claim within few days and usually reimburse you without any questions!
