Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Oh my God! Where should I start? If I did not have healthy paws as my insurance company my five month old German Shepherd probably wouldn't be alive more than a year. I got healthy Paws based on the reviews and the internet because my veterinarian did not have any brochures about them. They had it about other animal insurance companies. So I did research and did the math and chose healthy Paws Insurance. They were easy and very convenient to not only get my check to get surgery for my german shepherd who needed heart surgery but throughout the whole claim. I've received nothing but professionalism and kindness and concern even after her surgery. Can you believe that they actually emailed... Read More

My husband and I, senior citizens, decided to get our Maggie (Havanese) after we fell in love with our daughter's Havanese. We assisted our daughter in choosing the 'best' and know now, the 'RIGHT' pet insurance company. Healthy Paws Pet Insurance goes "ABOVE and BEYOND" to provide the best insurance for pets. We have had two claims already which were handles promptly, professionally and to our satisfaction. Would recommend Healthy Paws to anyone searching for pet insurance.

My lab gets into more trouble than I ever imagined he would. Getting insurance was the best decision I've ever made. He has had major issues, like getting into poison, and tearing his ACL which required a very expensive surgery. Each time I have submitted a claim, I have received payment promptly. I chose Healthy Paws because their plans did not have a lifetime or annual limit like the other companies do. Very happy with their service, and highly recommend.

I got my dog in December 2016 when he was only eight weeks old. I insured him almost immediately with Healthy Paws because they were so highly rated. There was nothing anywhere in their website or info that they didn’t cover pets in Canada. They have had my Canadian address from day one and have been taking my monthly premiums.. My dog has just recently had serious liver issues and surgery and it wasn’t until I filed the claim that I was informed that they don’t cover Pets in Canada. I am very disappointed. I have recommended the company to my friends, thank God no one signed up.

In 2010, we got our pup and did our due diligence in pet insurance research to make sure we planned for our dog, Zach. Friends and family would tease us about the money we were "wasting" on this insurance when there were cheaper options available; however, we felt most comfortable with Healthy Paws after comparing all the plans and company reputation. 6+ years flew by and we rarely ever used the insurance but was happy that our dog was living a happy and healthy life. Unfortunately, 2017 was not so smooth. After finding a cyst and bladder stones, the doctor visits and surgeries were enough to stress any pet parents out. One thing we did not have to worry about (thanks to our original... Read More

My dog a Maltese Mix became deathly ill in a matter of hours. We rushed to the vets where they said she was a sick-sick little dog. The sheer terror at the possible loss of my 3year old companion was all I could handle. I told my vet that I had insurance with healthy paws. I'm disabled with no disposable income, but they allowed me to pay a small down payment. Healthy paws contacted me right off with settlement amounts & in a couple days settlement was in my account! I was able to pay wonderful vet who saved my little girls life. Without Healthy paws I couldn't have afforded the care that saved her!!! All my THANKS Healthy Paws.

We have been a member for over three years now. We've had an exceptional experience with Healthy Paws for this time. Our English Bulldog had a major surgery and recently was very ill. Because of Healthy Paws our baby was well taken care of. Like most pet owners, our dog is a member of our family. We are thankful for the efficiency and caring of Healthy Paws. I would recommend this company especially for Bully owners!

Healthy paws has been excellent with my helping me with the claims for my dog Bella. Bella tore her ACL and it has been terrible because she just turned 2 years old as is a very active young pitty. The reps at Healthy Paws have made a terrible time much easier and got me my reimbursements much more quickly than I ever expected. They even call and write to see how Bella is doing!! They are a great company and I would recommend them to anyone with loves their pets..

I write this review while in the midst of one of the most challenging periods in my life. My dog is seriously ill and I am awaiting the results of a test run by a specialist. I have been doing little else besides waiting for the phone to ring and taking care of my other animals. Nonetheless I am making time to acknowledge the simply outstanding care and service I have received as a Healthy Paws client. Without both the robust coverage afforded me by their policies, and their above and beyond customer service, I can honestly say my dog might not be alive right now. I have been a client with Healthy Paws for five years now and have received many time more in medical coverage for my... Read More

Healthy paws has time and time again proven to be the best choice I have made in my dogs healthcare. My dog was hit by a car a week before my wedding. With the bills already mounting I started to panic. I spoke with Sabrina at healthy paws and she had my claim submitted before I had even picked up my dog from the vet. They covered 90% of my bills and relieved all my stress. From top the bottom the organization cares about its customers and pets. They even sent a hand written get will card :) I highly advice all new pet owners to get pet insurance!
